  • I actually liked this documentary but some of these speakers seemed like some dyke cunts that need some dick ASAP

  • @joshd9124 If they actually are dyke cunts, I don't think even a lady's man like your self would be able to sway them.

  • Welcome to the machine...

  • Comment removed

  • The Hurcles song is a spoof of their own company.. O.o

  • This documentary really reminds me of the Magic bullet-theory that was really popular during the 80's and 90's. I do agree Disney has impact and that it forms our society, but we can't just blame Disney alone. That would be too easy. We're not brainless, helpless people. There's communication, there's education. And while I cannot deny Disney has its impact, I do believe its easier to point the finger rather than handing a solution or think of the responsibility of education and parents.

  • great documentary.

  • Yeah the English went back to England after the events of Pocahontas. That's totally what happened.

  • You mean consumerism ina capitalist society? Gasp! How dare thee? IT'S CALLED SUPPLY AND DEMAND! And I never played the movie. I had my TMNT play with my Gargoyle and Toy Story toys, so creativity was never a problem. And the directors will be the first to tell you they were mocking said society. Shame on Disney for making ads that...do their job. And creating products that...we like. And, um, there's a reason Eisner no longer resides at the Mouse House anymore.

  • I was raised on these movies and while yes, I see the underlying racism and sexism now SURPRISE! I'm not a racist, barefoot housewife. I took them as movies. Maybe we should be blaming the parents that let movies raise their children.

  • watched this in High School for a class and couldn't say it then, but now I finally have the opportunity and just wanted to get this off my chest.... ahem... 0:20.... NERRRRRDDDDDDDDD

  • Walt Disney worshiped Satan

  • You know Disney has a huge affect on people when you see them defending it hardcore.

  • this is exactly how the jonas bros and hannah montana can turn into worldwide sold out concert musical acts. Disney simply uses its massive marketing to tell kids how awesome these acts are, and before you know it the kids believe it. Disney milks the teens, rakes in the money, tosses them when they get too old and repeats the process again in a few years. Look at the Jonas bros now...becoming more obscure and irrelevant by the week.

  • While I thoroughly enjoyed this doco, as a parent, a teacher and a gender researcher I take issue with the *as an entertainer they have a responsibility to be a teacher* statement. No. they dont. their sole purpose is to make money. it is up to PARENTS and not so much teachers to equip their children with the tools to be able to read media correctly. we cant keep passing the buck to the media industry - or rather we can if what we desire is to sit around complaining while they make money....

  • everyones a critic....

  • Just finished this movie. I don't see why people waste time looking for "subliminal" messages in Disney movies when the most offensive/derogatory elements are so obvious. I think some people can sense that something is off with these films...maybe that explains it.

  • In Hercules the song with characters buying all the stuff was to show how big companies manipulate people and blow their products out of proportion to influence public opinion. Disney was basically making fun of itself.

  • JOHN SMITH RAPED POCAHONTUS!

  • I was once a fan of the Mickey Mouse Club. Now, I want nothing less than its complete dissolution. In this age of infinite wisdom and information this illusion has no place left. It hinders imagination. To dissolve this profit oriented market agenda, I shall devote my utmost time and sincerity. Change is necessary for humanity to evolve.

  • To those saying Pocahontas was fine the was it was: it also teaches children lying about the past is justified. We learn from our mistakes, we admit it, own up to every last bit of it and clean up the mess.

  • I never replicated scripts with action figures, i made new stories. Luke Skywalker would ride the At-At, make friends with Arthur the Aardvark, save a giant iguana from evil knights and their dastardly trap door. I'm not actually against the larger points of this documentary, but i just wanted to say that. They're under-estimating the imaginations of kids.

  • DO NOT WATCH THIS DOCUMENTARY. IF YOU DO, YOU WILL GET ANNOYED WITH YOURSELF. YOU'LL START TO NOTICE STEREOTYPES OF GENDERS AND SHAMELESS ADVERTISING EVERYWHERE AND WILL THINK THAT IT IS DISNEY THAT HAS INFLUENCED YOUR WHOLE PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOUR.

DISNEY IS A GOOD COMPANY. I'M NOT SAYING THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE THEIR BAD BITS. I'M JUST ADVISING PEOPLE HERE.

  • @FloppyAndBoppy So you're suggesting we all live in ignorance and pretend these problems don't exist? That is a very privileged thing to say . . . the reason you'll notice sexist things everywhere after watching this is because WE LIVE IN A SEXIST SOCIETY. If nobody educates themselves, these things will never change. Documentaries like this that present us with alternative viewpoints and open our minds are CRUCIAL

  • 'Disney' is a company made up of people. We as people are still getting it wrong. The films reflected society. They only reflect us. US. Of course anylysis of the films will show stuff that is not correct today.

Disney is not a cause, it's an effect. Think about that before you go pointing the finger. Go ahead, take responsability. Teach your children the NEW society, teach them equality and caring and awareness. We as people are constantly evolving.

  • Where are our children going to get any sense of the history of this culture and what happened? LOL its called a textbook and school, and not disney movies. If you still a little ify teach em yourself

  • Yes, there are only a hand full of arguments in this world, why can't they stick to only ones?

  • Don't worry, people :)

  • OK, so let me get this straight, this video argues that all female characters have to get saved by a man, so we'll ignore Mulan and Pocahontas. But they will bring up Mulan and Pocahontas in a negative light on the representation of race. And it also tries to argue that they did not include any Africans in Tarzan which is set in Africa, but when they do portray African Americans it is purely racist and wrong. I would really appreciate it if they picked an argument and stuck to it!

  • @susanj01 Usually problems are interrelated and do not stem from one factor. If you trip, it's not because the rock made you, it's because you weren't perceptive to the rock, your balance is off, your brain can't compensate enough and you fall face down, ect. nice try at being smert though, keep it up cool_chic_01

  • @susanj01 Did you pay attention to what the children were saying after seeing Pocohontas? Black people are either not in the films at all or they are portrayed as chimps and apes who will never be real men. Your powers of intellect and observation cause me to assume you were raised on disney.

  • @Dehzee I was raised on Disney, you are quite right. But I am not racist in the slightest, I did not grow up to believe that men and women had certain roles and must behave in certain ways. I grew up believing that everyone should be polite and welcoming. I fail to see the real negative impact Disney had on me when I was young and how that affected me as a person.

  • @susanj01 You are not able 2 discern or recognize negative, sexist programming. My guess is you are white because if U had colour perhaps U'd recognize when U R being put down. Children R being taught 2 act & manipulate sexually, innocence is sexualized, ever notice how disneys girls (Brit-Xtina) grow up? They model sex slavery. This isn't about girls being taught 2 own their sexuality, it is girls being taught 2 control others with it or sacrifice themselves 2 abusive men. Look around U.

  • @Dehzee As clarified, I was bought up on Disney, and i do not act and manipulate sexually. the disney girls such as brit and xtina, my guess is they are the way they are because they were put in the public eye at a very young age. And I never said I don't see the negative in Disney (i have just written a 10,000 word dissertation on negative stereotypes in disney) I just don't agree with this documentary, i think the arguments are contradictory and pretty pathetic.

  • @susanj01 The miss interpretation of History?

  • @mariomash808 I'm assuming you're mainly referring to Pocahontas with this. I get that it is a terrible mis-interpretation of history, but do you really expect Disney to portray the true story which involves her dying at what 22?! and then making it suitable for children! Disney never said it was a true story, just based on one. they are not documentary makers they are animators.

  • Wow people are blind, why are most people on youtube stupid?

  • @CeeZee9264 Cuz they grew up watching disney! LOL!

  • @Dehzee Very true lol

  • The parents have the choice to buy these products for their kids. My parents didn't get me everything i wanted because i saw it on tv... Every kid will want everything they see on tv. parents just have to say no.

  • @Elie303 same. I totally used my disney toys to make my own adventures. These "researchers" seem to have found the worst subjects possible.

  • Umm....I learned about the history of Native Americans and European colonialism because at age 7 I saw Pocahontas and asked my dad about the story. He explained the history in terms a 7 year old could understand, but it was still accurate history. And even as a kid, I understood the purpose of the "savages" song...it's hyping up the troops. It's not meant to portray the reason for the conflict. If a 7 year old can figure that out, why can't these professors?

  • There are tons of stuff I watched as a kid on Sat. morn that I can't see now in the form that I watched it, and yet many people won't even question a Disney film. Sorry, but there is some merit to what this documentary is saying, if one has an open mind. It doesn't mean you have to agree with it, but they make valid points. "It's made for children" is the lame, and uninformed response. I'd like to hear an equally thought out rebuttal.

  • Not to knock anyone's opinions, but I find it odd the arbitrary way people use the term "it was made for children" to condone something when they want to dismiss the argument. For example Barbie is "made for children" yet many consider it an unrealistic, and harmful portrayal of women. Video games are played by children (regardless who the game was made for) yet we talk about the"subconscious" desensitization to violence they produce. Cartoons in the U.S. were completely censored for years.

  • Hmmm, who stole who's resources...well the US has stolen from the third world for hundreds of years and that is never taught in schools. That is the real problem in our culture. So we should care about what is in a cartoon, but we shouldn't talk about the horrible things the US does everyday to oppress people all over the world.

  • What the hell? Who believes this garbage? I was raised on Disney and I didn't even pay attenetion to all this crap. I loved them because of the stories they told and how they made me feel. Can't people just enjoy their movies and not be so critical, and just keep in mind that they were made for children?

  • @CocoKiindt Yes they were made for children, and children are incredibly impressionable which places a great responsibility on the people creating these films and programs to make sure that they're not sending the wrong messages. While they're not completely responsible for how children grow up and develop, its without a doubt that Disney has a profound effect on child development just as you stated about yourself. Much of our learning takes place in the subconscious esp at a young age...

  • Don't miss the point @ 5:19

  • nderstand that Disney movies are based on their time in history. Snow White is obviously gonna be a cleaning freak because that was expected back then.

Woman are of course seen as sultry, in ALL aspects. Just watch any movie of any era. Its not OUR fault that men respond to sultriness and its how we get their attention.

  • The last quote was so true. Entertainment, art is incredibly powerful because you have someone's attention. American music and cinema are yet somehow completely devoid of any message. It's mindless entertainment and fun, which historically is very different from the way art was used.

Simply from its lack of action, Disney is causing great harm. They have crated a void in our society.

  • It's literally painful to see how retarted some people are. My stomach hurts no joke

  • how do i cite something from this video..i dont know the producers name or anything

  • @gmojica1 go to imdb, it's on there.

  • @SocialistFish thnx

  • Uh? You don't have to buy Disney products if you don't want to. What I find funny is that they make it sound as though there are no other things to buy. If they are concerned about how children play with the toys, I remember when Terminator 2 came out, they selled Terminator character action figures. I used to have the Terminator and the young John Conner.

  • "Where are our children going any sense of this culture, and of this country, and of what happened. . .?" Um, I believe there is a little thing called "history class", "school" maybe? So, what do they want? They want Disney to now be educational? I can see it now; The Disney History Channel!

  • @TheTovestar Because the history we learn in grade school is sooo informative and unbiased and doesn't at all reflect a single story. Heavens no!

  • They're confusing the movies with the Disney Channel.

THAT is what is poisoning our children's minds. :(

  • @IvyPane, Amen to that!

  • this was the worst documentary ever. it trolls so hard

  • LOOK PEOPLE I GREW UP WATCHING THESE MOVIES TOO... BUT I CANT HONESTLY AGREE WITH GENDER REPRESENTATIONS.... JUST SIT BACK, WATCH AND LEARN.. YEA DISNEY'S A PERSONAL TOPIC BECAUSE YOU GREW UP WITH IT . BUT IT DOESNT MEAN IT DIDNT SEND WRONG MESSAGES.. LIKE SERIOUSLY STOP GETTING OFFENDED IT'S NOT LIKE U MADE THE CARTOONS.. THESE PEOPLE PUT UP A GOOD ARGUMENT ALL U CAN SAY IS.. "IT'S MEANT TO BE FUN AND TO ENTERTAIN".. THAT'S IT..

  • @mochajoe2 Just because you have a caps lock button doesn't automatically give you a strong argument.

  • I grew up watching disney videos with my mom and NEVER even had the slightest thought of all of these supposed conflicts that children are supposively having.

  • I was a kid who watched all of these Disney movies and I learned in school that all of the Disney movie "facts" I believed as a kid were not true. I am not emotionally harmed or racist - I am perfectly fine. I believe this video is partly true in a sense, but it's being portrayed as much more serious as it needs to be. IT'S DISNEY! It's supposed to be fictional! Jeesh. Stop ruining the fun.

  • People are really in denial about how much impact a movie can have about gender on a child unconsciously.

  • @Banaany

    subconsciously *

  • @Banaany i know. I'm actually really surprised at some of the comments i've seen. Media plays a HUGE role in socialization.

  • I loved that Tarzan computer game :) lol

  • I love Disney, and disney practically WAS my childhod. It made me so happy and entertained, and i loved disney as a child. I sitll do, and i've learned many lessons froom their movies. i turned out fine! :) I'm not racist or sexist, but i keep those lessons disney has taught me. :)

  • "When are children ever going to get any sense of the history of this culture, and of this country, and of what happend?"

.....when they go to school. We all had that moment in our lives when we were told in school that the Disney version of Pocohantas was, in fact, complete bullshit, along with the rest of Disney's "historical" movies.

We then said "Oh. Okay." and went on with our lives.

  • @Mperce Amen! I had someone nitpick Anastasia saying it would never teach kids the ACCURATE details that truly befell the Romanovs.. when really I mean is Disney supposed to be School as well?! Should we not have history teachers anymore and pay Disney to do the teaching. Plus that whole thing on creativity being taken by have disney toys is bullshit. I had dolls from all their movies and I NEVER played the movie once more thats just stupid. >.<

  • Okay, why do we not blame the parents for not pre-screening the films and deciding what is appropriate or inappropriate for the child? The original Disney films--Snow White and that era--were not even made for children, just to be good movies in a new medium. Of course your child will retain bad images if he/she is exposed without guidance. Parents need to take the responsibility instead of just whining in documentaries that only PROVE they didn't prescreen the movies...or watch them at all.

  • @JaceyDemy what you fail to realize is that this is not a cut and dry issue. The other point you fail to see is the marketing, and how companies like Disney aren't just looking for movie profits they do research on how to expand their audience...we're talking up and down the age scale and with that their ads are aimed to get kids to nag their parents better to get the results of going to see a movie or to buying that product. When children are bombarded with over 40,000 ads PER DAY

  • @mesla23 I really don't think it matters much how much parents are "pre-screening" movies or whatever, the children can still get the message through the non stop media stream. I don't have cable and our computer use at home is basic, but my son is still exposed to most of what the media want him to be exposed to, why? because we are not isolated from the world. It is entirely impossible to "protect" yourself or your children from these movies and media messages so you need to be informed.

  • I just noticed that Disney's programs serve more largely a teen/older adult audience nowadays...

    AP

  • @AfroPlato Therefore it might be nice to show them to that audience instead of assuming all animation is for kids and complaining.

  • @JaceyDemy I assume Disney started out making their animation for children - not teens and young adults. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse aren't going to be idolized by this group. Given that, I believe that the animations portrayed are directed to children. I don't remember any teen or young adult wanting a Disney action figure. Who does this? If you know that, you probably know who these movies are suited for.

  • 2:06 *big gasp* AAHH the Tarzan Ps1 game oh I used to love that game the best when I had a ps1 it was cool. Had it as a birthday gift ^_^

  • Definitely food for thought. I realized Disney failed at feminism, but the depths of their racism and of course the all-encompassing commercialization is pretty scary. The problem is that the movies are so fun. They're great entertainment. But we need to ask some serious questions about that entertainment and what it's teaching.

This is the reason why I encouraged my little sisters to watch Studio Ghibli films as children, instead of or next to Disney.

  • Thanks for posting this. There is some good food for thought here.

  • yes but if you want your kids to be kool they have to have the kool stuff. the same stuff as the rest of the kids whos parents have the funds to buy that stuff. Also it is a business. they do a good job making money. but a lot of people watch on netflix, or wherever cheaply.

  • @WonderWomanFan4life Is being cool really the most important thing in your kid's lives?

  • @tashapants

well say what you want. You watch tv. Ask most parents. i dont have kids. BUt I have friends who do. They all say the same. When kids are little you can buy cheap azz payless shoes, whatever looks cute and is cheap but once they the kids figure it out. They demand BRANDS. which is why EBAY, close out stores, etc make money off selling LAST years name brands Ross, TJMAX etc. Because if you dont wear brand u are mistreated. Which I think UNIFORMS are best school is about EDUCATION

  • This documentary is terrible.

Just a bunch of people complaining about trivial stuff.

  • One little word fixes every single problem these people have: parenting. Yeah, Disney has portrayed some immoral stuff in the past. But if you're letting a movie, TV show, or video game to have the last word on equality, world history, or anything for that matter then you're an awful parent and a stupid movie is not what you should be worrying about.

  • @KTSamurai i agree

  • @KTSamurai THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

  • little kids are sooo dumb man. thats whats so cute about them though

  • I'm curious as to why they only found fault with the cartoons. What about The parent Trap. I guess it's message is saying if you have a twin you can bring your parents back together. They missed some positive films that it has released in it's day such as The Miracle Worker, the long walk home, ruby bridges, pollyanna, old yeller. Just like any company that is as old as disney, it has it's good years and it's bad years.

  • bottom line more play, less TV!

  • Very interesting. Now I understand why my parents didn't let me see any disney movies except Bambi, Lady and the Tramp and Fox and the Hound as a kid. I didn't see the rest of the disney movies until college. When Pocahantas came out, my dad got me the biography of Pocahantas and a cheaply made movie portraying the true story. I felt gypped at the time but...its better to know the true story.

  • @lukeia2000 Being a theater major if i was your parent I would have let you watched both and then had a discussion about how the two films are different. Sorry if you find my comment a little creapy.

  • @actheaterstudent No I don't find it creepy. And I guess I should've expanded. We did watch the movies like Polyanna, Old Yeller, Disney's Zorro, and Swiss Family Robinson. It was mainly the animated movies that were restricted.

  • @lukeia2000 well that's what I find creepy about this film is that they attack only cartoons and most of disney's cartoons are fairytales, also alot of them that they talked about are very far apart time wise. For example peter pan was in 1953 before there was a standard on how you represented people. In films indians still spoke english like tanto did and nobody really cared. It wasn't until after civil rights that things changed.

  • @actheaterstudent that's very true. And with the princess and the frog the film is now out of date where african americans...or people of darker skin tone in general is concerned.

  • @lukeia2000 PatF renders the majority of this documentary irrelevant.

  • 1:01 sorry little girl thats not gona happen never will never did nuff said

  • i disagree with parents sheltering there kids from the real world

  • Michael Isner SCREWED UP DISNEY!!! Now the company has basically gone to crap because of him!

  • This documentary raises a lot of good points. But the thing is, it's up to the parents to make sure their kids are brought up properly, and that they understand what they're seeing. I grew up with Disney, and I turned out totally fine (well, as I can tell) I remember my mom teaching me to think about key elements in the movies I was seeing, and I learned to think twice. When I was really little, I just liked the pretty colours :)

  • ion POCAHONTAS, I dont think the film was showing the Europeans racism as a good thing, it showed how they (those 1600 European characters) felt and later in the film it showed a character learning that he was wrong about Native Americans...

  • @hairypolack Well, I think that was kinda distorting the historical truth of the Native American genocide, wasn't it?

  • @hairypolack They romanticized the cultural and literal genocide of Native Americans and reinforced oppressive stereotypes. They rewrote history, erasing the horrible, bloody oppression of the Native American people. Of course they weren't consciously saying "racism is good" (nobody does that - racism is subtle and systematic) but they sent a message that white people are superior and that everything we did when we came to America was great which is simply a lie.

  • ok, the hercules example pissed me off, they are saying that because hercules had his own merchandise in the movie that disney was pre-emptively plotting to target kids in merchandise sales, when i watched the movie as a kid, i thought it was making fun the marketing that is so common in todays world

  • play is diffrent for every child!!!!! media is an influence, but teachers and parents are our educators. if you dont have communication...then play gets " lost in translation" meaning. children are gonna recreate their own idea from a movie. marketing and adverisment..."location...location...location.." " sell big or go home".

  • @somewhereoutthere007 continued

it's our responsiblitiy as people, as parents, as young adults to teach others....to be informed. the media takes on so much heat because sometimes it takes over democracy. When i watched disney movies...i was innocent myself in my thinking.

  • @somewhereoutthere007-now that im older i can connect intercate ideas...and bigger pictures. something that a childs brain can't retain very well. BUT we all know children's brains and educating them right at a young age. is a big deal. Parents just want whats the very best. to protect, teach, help their child learn about the world.

  • @somewhereoutthere007-finally there are things the child should learn on their own as well. and they will when they get to the age where they can actually understand, all these issues that have aroused over the years.

  • If Disney "causes" any negative stereotypical side effects (which can only be demonstrated via experimental design), they account for such a small percentage of the variance that it's not even worth mentioning.

  • That is such a positivist take on this.

  • What did I learn from this flick (aside from the fact that I should drop my minor)? That communication studies, gender studies, and race studies continue to be dominated by individual opinions instead of data. How do these films really affect our youth? Are children exposed to Disney more susceptible to racism than children not exposed to Disney?

  • Other than the positivist tone of your comment, I just want to point out that children's susceptibility to racism is not so much the point. it's not about who's more likely to be racist. what is being talked about here is the message that gets across, the message that is communicated to kids (many in their crucial, formative age) who are not quite capable of processing the stuff they watch.

  • @tintinbofin Whatever the "point" of this film is, nothing discussed or provided in this film as evidence is any bit empirically based. It is completely worthless. It's as if I could go on someone's blog and read the same damn thing. Anyone could have made this movie, and anyone can make a claim about a "message." All I'm saying is that this isn't supported by any substantial data whatsoever.

  • I remember as a girl, I didn't replicate the story of Tarzan and Jane. I made them the parents of three kids: a Noddy doll and three slender Japanese girl dolls. I used to play with them with my little bro.

  • Wow @ the "analysis" of Hercules in the video. Talk about satire going way over the heads of the lady speaking.

  • As an entertainer, it would be noble to be a teacher, but you have no obligation or responsibility to be one.

  • I also have to add that having a limit on characters here STINKS!!! I could write a book on here about this topic. I in NO way endorse Disney. I found this conversation because I just went there on vacation and thought it sucked. LOL. Filthy - service was bad...etc.

  • First of all - so many of you should use a dictionary. Now, as far as this film is concerned it is as close to propaganda as any Disney film. But I suppose the point is you aren't afraid to pick IT apart and should maybe look at what your children watch with more interest. Disney films are largely based on fables and stories written by other people. Disney is a corporation and has no obligation to do anything for you. Parents need to step up and teach their kids. Just say NO if you hate it.

  • 0:06- I was going to say that kids should be getting that from school, but then I realized that, in public schools, at least, history is sugar-coated, too (Columbus "discovering" America, the 1st Thanksgiving, etc.). There's an awesome book called "Lies My Teacher Told Me" that talks about how American kids are screwed over when it comes to learning real history, and it tells what really happened.

  • uh the answer IS school, that IS where kids should learn about history... not disney. so its completely irrelevant.

but ok, yes, sometimes schools arent perfect. but i went to a public school and i heard about the columbus myth, the fountain of youth myth, the 1st thanksgiving myth... lots of times. so i dont know.

  • Yeah, some schools do give students the truth, but I was told those myths all the time when I was younger (in second grade, we had a Thanksgiving party where we dressed up as Pilgrims and Natives, for instance). I think all children deserve to hear what really happened rather than hearing sugar-coated myths. It's good to know that some schools, like yours, do tell the truth.

  • WHOLE SYSTEM REBOOT

  • Go Disney go... create those jobs to help our economy out.

  • Since when is Hercules based on ancient Greece as it really was? It doesn't even follow Greek mythology completely. The whole idea behind the "Hercules" marketing in the film was to create a parallel to modern society and it lead to the main character realizing that being famous isn't being a real hero.

  • Great video! check out my channel

  • I agree - when a corporation has that much power they have a moral (not legal) resposibility to be accurate and truthful - otherwise, things will just get too corrupt. Of course, no corporation ever does this, and that's why American society is in the toilet.

  • bday121

Unfortunately, they don't. Nobody is obligated to be for people what people should be already. Disney never advertised themselves as a historically accurate studio, nor did they ever strive to be. And in that respect, they should never be told to be.

  • all of this was interesting and legit, until the lady says "i think they have a responsibility to educate children" no, they have no responsibility. this is a free country, they can do what they want. the only responsibility they have is a contractual responsibility to their share-holders, and that responsibility is to make money. don't like it? then you don't like america.

  • Dumb Bitch at 1:30. Duh, because they want your money, its nothing personal.

  • I think if they're going to make the claim that the hyenas in Lion King were representations of urban minorities, then the film shows how their poverty is exploited by people in power.

  • That scene in herculese where all the stuff ahs his face on it... was one f my fave parts. I saw it as a satire on how disney operates itself. As if they were making fun of themselves. This documentary just tears down everything I liked.

  • Im pretty sure these "experts" bought such advertisement things for whatever was big when they were kids!!! They prolly went out and bought the Barbie products, or whatever movie product was big during their childhood. So why is it bad now that its their kids buying it?! These kids are watching thse movies to ENJOY them. If parents are so worried, do the JOB of a parent and teach their kid it is a movie and wat is real and wat is not! (most kids understand its just a movie anyway)

  • i find it insane that the woman is like "i find it offensive that i have to do disney's advertising for them because i have to buy t shirts and backpacks" as if someone's forcing her to buy stuff.

also, i dont know about you guys, but i never acted out the script of the movies. i had a batman / spiderman / hercules team fight playdoh or whatever. these people severely underestimate kids. or maybe they just have dumb kids! jaykay.

  • dont you understand any of this? its all subliminal, of course they dont make you buy it, its worse, they make you think you want it

  • The criticism of the Hercules montage misses the point. There are several jokes about fame and making fun of merchandizing. Air Herc has nothing to do with Disney but with Michael Jordan's Air Michael shoes. I think its a self conscious satyr of merchandizing. To say it is not historically accurate is like saying life of Brian is not historically accurate. This is in most ways a modern story with modern themes.

  • I don't believe for a second that a child playing with an action figure of any movie is trying to follow the script of that movie. They come up with their own adventures and imagine different and often better situations for their favorite characters. It's laughable that a doctor of all people would think otherwise.

  • Maybe, but I would also suggest that the children don't need the toys to play the movie. I remember often as a child needing to watch TV before I played with toys because I wanted ideas. Whenever I read a book, my toys, whatever brand, became those characters. Media influences imagination period, with or without the toys to re-enforce it.

  • @StrikeThePoz You're absolutely right. I think this documentary puts arbitrary words in the mouths of kids. Where is the evidence to support the claim that children's imaginations are inhibited by playing with Disney action figures? They also cherry pick the parts of the movies that support their views. As for Pocahantas, elementary schools do the same thing. Everyone pretended that the pilgrims and native americans lived happily ever after and had thanksgiving.

  • what a weak documentary. i thought it was going to be about disney as a corporation actions, which they barely covered. a bunch of whining idiots with nothing better to do than nitpick children's movies. beauty and the beast's theme is to stick by an abusive husband? i thought it was to look past the surface to find inner beauty. guess my parents messed up big time

  • I can't tell if they're criticizing Walt Disney Pictures, a film distribution company which markets to children, Walt Disney Studios, the animation studio, or Disney Corperation, the parent comapny.

The Micheal Esener quote at the ene I think is taken out of context. He's not saying that they can make bad movies he's saying that the goal is to make money be it from children's cartoons, chidrean's movies, adult movies, news, sports, etc.

  • @demetriosprime There is a huge difference between Disney as a corporate entity and Disney as storytellers. And how are these people nitpicking when it's clear they didn't even watch the movies? Good on you for your analysis.

  • @demetriosprime thats right. a great example is charles manson sure he convinced people to murder and wanted to start a race war, but if we look past all that we can see the soul of an artist and a musician.

  • @demetriosprime

I totally agree with you there. This documentary is completely one-dimensional and shallow.

Now these whining self-righteous idiots are bashing video games.

  • At the same time you must consider the time period which Disney is trying to portray. They can't soften history. You can't hide all the terrible things that went on and cover them up telling children don't watch that. It's just a less boring history lesson. Disney is to be watched by parents narrating the lessons to the children watching them. Children don't read between the lines, so parents need to tell kids what is right and wrong about the movie. To totally ban Disney... they will defy you.

  • OH MAN!!! i totally agree with you. i just typed up a four page essay voluntarily cuz im sick of all this racism towards white people (im black). it doesnt make any sense. the point of watching a movie is to ENJOY it. when you watch it for the sole reason of criticizing racits points ur taking the pint out of the movie and you are being an extremist.

  • I was a huge Disney lover when I was a kid but now I really don't like Disney. I think some of the racial stereotype arguments are valid, but the ones about the Hyenas were a little skeptical. What kind of accent do you expect the hyenas to have in AFRICA? I mean, I don't really know the true African accent, but if Disney didn't know then how is it of true discrimination? I am not taking any side, I'm just asking. The crows, I thought they were funny when I watched Dumbo. Everything is racist.

  • I don't understand their qualm with the hyenas either. I think it is a regional thing because I didn't identify with that issue whatsoever. The crows are racist, though. I never watched Dumbo but they were probably funny. The probablem is that black people are not depicted in any other way or that all of the crows were supposed to be black.

  • However, most of the "white" characters in the movie are very cruel. The "black" crows in fact try to help Dumbo. Therefore, they are portrayed as good.

  • They were magical blackies. The black people who dont care about their own hardships and help the white character

  • Dang, I feel sorry for that first kid.

  • i wouldn't always play with a toy the way i was "suppose" to.

  • It's up to us to turn if off.

  • Just like Obama making a speech and everything is better. This whole game of charades is coming crashing down sooooo hard.

  • 1:30 - "Wahh, I don't want to buy things! waaah!"

  • is this video broken? or is it just me

  • dont be fooled about this documentary

i mean seriously this video is very insultive to my intelligence because every time they show a scene from a disney movie its actually cutted and "the male save female" thing, they never said that ariel saved eric during the storm sequence. and what michael eisner said at the end of the vid dosent represent the whole disney company, just him. and the hercules thing its because its an EPIC COMEDY. and about the racist issues... well lets watch the frog movie

  • @TheBuenaventura93 yeah and that advertising clip from the movie seemed to me more like a parody of marketing to kids rather than marketing to kids in general. i wouldn've known that even as a little kid

  • Lot's of companies market it's merchendise not just Disney, like Looney Toons for instance! I still remember being in elementry school and seeing nearly hundreds of looney toons lunch pals, back packs, shirts and whatever that belonged to my fellow classmates. I even had a few myself! So why dont you people complain about that huh?! Companies advertise whatever they can, it's what they do!

  • I turned out fine Myself (apart from poor body image), but I have great parents Who taught Me the ways of the world. Some kids aren't so lucky, though. Disney is basically a babysitter for them and they retain the messages without being taught any other way. This is why Disney needs to have responsibility. I mean no harm or offence to anyone, this is just My opinion so if You give Me thumbs down it's Your problem.

Sorry if My grammar is bad. I'am more of a maths person.

  • I grew up watching Disney but this is convincing.

  • no, you can read them fairy tales like my mother did. She read us stories from all around the world: Africa, India, China, AND Europe. There are enough good stories in the world without rewriting them to fit a narrow patriarchal view. It the underlying moral lessons that matter. I think it is interesting that the only alternative you see to stereotyping other races is to stereotype whites

  • Anyways, if we no longer want Disney to show fairy tales, since they're obviously fake, what should we show or teach children instead? Should we flip to the other side of the coin, and teach all little white kids stereotypes of whites as opressive, mean, exploitive, etc? Should we show them the brutal conquests of the world by ALL types of people (no race has ever had complete peace, even if left all by itself)? The most important thing to remember is that these are kids; most grow out of it.
