  • IT'S A SIN that there never was a rush2049 pinball game, and hot rod rebels was never finished.Midway management kinda sucked for that and look what happened to midway R.I.P.

  • I've LOVED the Rush series for the longest time; the games offered some of the most entertaining, engaging, and challenging gameplay in the racing genre. The disregard for realism/simulation offered an opportunity to do some of the most creative and ridiculous stuff, and it was always a blast.

I was phenomenally disappointed when Midway released "LA Rush," and have always wanted a return to the Rush 2/2049 type of game :/ Barry Leitch was the best music choice, too! :P Thanks for many fun hours

  • They have worked for Atari games? Great!

Can you tell me exactly when Atari Games has closed? When Atari bought Midway Games? Took all programmers of Midway Atari? Who has after the bankruptcy of the entire documentation of Atai Midway Games? They were done in the trash?

    Thank you!

  • This being my biggest arcade addiction ever, I really have a question to make...

Are those "tricks" that let me finish the rock in less than 40 seconds bugs or features? (sorry for not being much obvious, I don't want to give any spoiler... I'm sure it's documented anywhere in the interwebs anyway)

  • Wow. Real arcade sf2049 footage. If only sf2049 could work in MAME right now because it doesn't work. Can u help with getting sf2049 to work?

  • Rush 2049 Special/Tournament Edition HD should be on XBLA/PSN as well as San Francisco Rush:Extreme Racing HD, Rush:The Rock Alcatraz Edition HD, and the N64 Exclusive Rush 2 HD that will make my life :)

  • 2:32 epic jump

  • @clubpenguin168

There's a ramp on the right side of the start/finish line that gets more. I remember watching our two testers: one would drive forward for two laps and hang out about 100' from this jump. The other tester would drive *backwards* while the other drove forwards. Then, the second racer would start from the top of the hill along the final straightaway, the first racer would accelerate towards the jump. The second racer would rear-end the first at the end of the ramp. THAT'S EPIC!

  • @wooterz

I found out the hard way.

  • i mean't CHD (chunks of Data)

  • grrr. i download this game on MAME. sad to say i spent 4 days on it getting all the VHD's and it didn''t even work. : P . i hope the creators or MAME get it to work on day. : P

  • @AlliedMaruaderTank19 The original Rush doesn't even work well on MAME yet.

  • Hey Stv, decided to do some memory lane strolling! Was awesome working on this game and will always be the best memories i have had in the industry.

Now i gotta go out and try and buy me two cabinets.

    FLUGAN !!!!!!

  • o.k. so i been playing this monster for three years now ........wiked fuking game...a great drinking game......lets me know if youre too hammered to drive......b

  • That's interesting. So you really used to work for Midway?

  • @jShazBOT Midway, Time Warner Interactive, Atari Games. Yes, yes, yes.

  • @stv2049

Dude, that's awesome. Actually talking to a game developer willing to reply to the comments people leave on his video. Are you working on the new Mortal Kombat game?

  • there needs to be another game like this .

  • Absolutely love this game, paid infinite to finally clear the coins at the top of the half-pipe on track 1. Think I'll dump another $20 into it this weekend! Thanks for posting this Steve

  • @SupermotoJohn 'half-pipe on track 1'? You know that the video shows me driving up and down inside the legs of the giant Atari 'Fuji' logo! ( it looks like this in ascii: /|\ ) I think there's a good shot of the structure (including the interior wireframe) on one of my blogs, along with a little write-up: stv2049.blogspot.com

    Enjoy!

  • Does anyone know if the half pipe is in the home version of sf2049?

I found the mini half pipe in the city level in the home version, and I found some weird stunt track with lots of turbo pads on the level with the lava lamps at the beginning....

I know the atari shortcut is removed from track 1 in the home version..

  • Any way to unlock all parts? Performance parts for the car. There is a way suposely a cheat but I never made it, and I've tried others with constant success, but not that one. Both in DC and in Midway Arcade Treasures 3 for ps2. Anyway knows how to make it possible??? I was hoping I could make it for 4 saves......................... what's the catch??? I'd like to have all 4p with any car setup they'd like for more sfr Xtreme fun.

    Thanks in advance! =)

  • Thanks for the post,STV. i wish there was a better home port of this, though. Rush 2049 is still the best arcade racer out there

  • Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has the rights to Rush 2049 after their buyout of Midway Games.

Do what I'm going to do and nag them for an arcade-perfect port for PSN and XBLA. Hydro Thunder deserves an XBLA/PSN port, too.

  • I will say that the home port is just not as fun as the arcade. the steering was too touchy and the wings were kinda lame. The Arcade verison of 2049 TE/SE had really jakked up steering too. I still love to see the Arcade verison get ported to XBLA/PSN w/ online play. that would be awesome!

  • thank god you showed that video my favorite course is the rock

  • What's the difference between the arcade and Midway Arcade Treasures 3?

  • Arcade Treasures 3 contains the Dreamcast version.

  • i wish i had the tournement version of that game. I only have the home version.

  • That must have been the hardest game in the world to make(and best!), the name is a bit depressing though.

  • STV2049 the name of the song is called "Noon"

  • Mine looks nothing like that 0_0

  • That's because this is the arcade version of the game...

  • what a fab racing game that was, sadly i never got to play the betson version but give it a few years and it might be playable on mame

  • Hey guys, i just bought a special edition rush 2049 full size arcade, let the fun begin !!!!

  • GRRRRR

  • really how?

  • What do yu mean ?

  • is it possible to get track 6 on the nintendo

    567992222260=998888259

    64

  • after you beat intermediat circuit you get that track

  • This looks like the most fun thing ever.

  • One thing I've always wondered, who is the RUSH guy? You know, the guy that says "3...2...1...RUSH!", "You have selected track X", etc.

  • That is the voice of Spencer Lindsay. He was the Art Director for Rush, Rush The Rock and part of 2049. I commemorated his departure from the team by erecting a gold statue of him in Golden Gate Park. Now find it and knock it down!

  • Hi, i have seen the statue but cane not knock it down, just before conatct it dissapears ?? why is that ?

  • its just special effects i think.

  • Disappearing == being knocked down when your statue is made out of single polygon. Thank you for playing!

  • Where exactly is the statue anyway? I'm guessing it's somewhere on track 2.

    Also, this game is DANGEROUS.

  • Just after the start/finish line to the right of the main road in a field on top of a low pyramid (to get air of course)

    STV

  • Thanks, guess I'll have to go looking for it next time I head to the arcade :P

  • is it possible to get track 6 on the nintendo 64 version of this game??

  • Yes. But do so you'll need the Expansion Pak (it replaces the Jumper Pak in the N64). You can find them really cheap nowadays.

  • yea thanks

i unlocked it real easy :)

and what is a jumper pak?

  • Hi, I'm an Italian Rush Player..

There is a secret passage at 0:50, where I can find and open it?

  • The Atari Fuji coin location is only available on the 3rd lap. At the base of the Crookedest Street, you'll see that a trolley car has opened up a side street. Follow this street to access the Atari Fuji, then simply follow the video.

  • Thank you!

  • I still play this for Gamecube. It will always be a classic.

  • I would think not. The game is almost 10 years old; any cabinets in existence will have seen many years of faithful service. Even so, a used cabinet won't be cheap.

  • It's like paying $20-$50 for an arcade game on a console that if you bought the actual cabinet, it would be thousands of dollars... and I can't afford that kind of stuff (damn the lucky people that can afford arcade cabinets!)

  • They should have put the arcade version of San Francisco Rush 2049 in Midway Arcade Treasures 3, like they did with San Francisco Rush: The Rock

  • hi stv2049 My name is victor hugo stv2049 what´s the rush opps san francisco rush font

  • they need to make another rush i mean in 2049 the shortcuts are just amazing its prety much the only aracde game i play in the arcade rooms my favorite ever sense i was little kid best racing game i ever played this and hydrothunder and 4 wheel thunder

  • couldnt agree more, rush 2049 and hydro thunder have been my favorite games of all time. i have them both for n64 and still play to this date.

  • Damn this game is LEGEND!!!! I've posted that all over the place and man I mean it!! Music by Barry Leitch, Dreamcast and N64 franchises with Midway, this game was huge! I loved every mile driven. This was way ahead of its time, the music the concept all of it is just amazing. So long as I live this game will be with me.

  • I've got one of the arcade versions in the basement and LOVE it. Only driver that I would own outside of maybe F355. Hard to win over a pinball nut. This game did it and perfect for home use.

  • this is llike my favorite racing game on dreamcast, nice vid 5 stars

  • You actually worked on the game? Thats awesome. I love Rush. I wish there was an arcade near me. So are do you think there will ever be a new Rush game that is similar to 2049? In the N64 version, are there any parts to unlock after 4000 miles? You are my hero, STV.

  • Wow. ;_; Thanks for the kind words! One can only hope, what with Midway's penchant for reaching back into the vault to revive an old franchise, that Rush 2049 will be dusted off someday. I can't speak to the mileage unlocks in N64, but I'm fairly confident that in Tournament Edition there were cars that unlocked past 4K.

    STV

  • How do you get the muscle car?

  • I'm pretty sure that the Muscle Car was unlocked through overall miles. 800? 1000?

  • @JUSTROCKET Muscle car with: Paint, License, Mileage needed.

    Yellow paint(MLOYLO?):100 Miles

    Blue paint(BLUBYU): 200 Miles

    Yellow-green(GOFAST): 400 Miles

    Black Paint(DABOMB): 1000 Miles

    Black with flames: 1500 Miles

    Red Paint Job: 2049 Miles

    Orange Paint: 5000 Miles

    Cop Car Paint: 10,000 Miles

  • i love this game i think its the best racing game ever, how come the new systems are sleeping on it?

  • were you playin online or something!?

  • D00D! 8-way linked racing in the lab! 8 arcade cabinets side by side by side (etc)

No multiplayer experience I've ever had comes close to the adrenaline, excitement, trash talk and FUN!

  • HI Steve!!! :) Awesome game!!!! Just watching the video makes me realize I have a LONG way to go on this game, I can get to the hard to reach coins, but still takes several tries, and besides the Rock, I can't do it all at once. The moves you have on Track 3 are INSANE!!! :)

Great work on a fantastic game! If you are ever in the area (TN) and want to stop by, let me know!

    Buzz :)

  • Thanks Buzz!

Watching the Multiplayer brings back fond memories of 8-way races in the lab!

What's more INSANE than my moves on Track 3 (4 into the 'volcano drop'?) is the frequency with which the other developers could hit these stunts alongside me! Check out the '4 into the hill climb' on Track 5 (~3:35) just like on Track 3: 4 go in, only 2 come out (did you catch the future cop car waiting at the exit?) Damn CONTENDER for beating me that race!

  • I can't even imagine! 8 way with all the players having that level of skill would be NUTS! :) I was actually thinking "how in the world are there so many cars at the same spot!?" especially on the Track 5 hill, as I have trouble getting up it even with no drones!!! hehe Having 3 others to bump into and knock you silly, or lose your speed and STILL make it up the hill is incredible!!!

  • (cont)

You all must have logged tons of playtime in!! :) I keep playing the video over and over but can't see the cop car! aggg! hehe.

Btw, are you in the picture in the alleyway?

  • What picture? Which alleyway? I did manage to put my picture in an alleyway in Rush The Rock, but I don't remember doing so in 2049.

The cop car is facing left on the left side of the screen in the corridor at ~3:54. Someone who chose NOT to join the insanity in the hillclimb would routinely take the 'long way' around and park in this corridor, hoping to intercept anyone who made it down the hill!

  • lol I exceeded the posting limit! :)

On the Noon Track, if you turn around at the Start/Finish line, and go past the "lava lamp" there are stairs you drive up to hit the STV logo, then back down and Uturn into a tunnel where they had a picture of the desingers (or at least some people!). You then could go to the tornado funnel board to the right. :)

  • NOW I remember that alley! The people in the picture are most certainly members of the Sales and Marketing team (Mike S., Elaine S., Mary? Randall?) but their exact names escape me (got a cel phone to refresh my memory?)

What a thrill it must have been for them to show off their pics in the game!

  • (con't again...)

Fantastic game!!! I still need a lot of practice before I will get anywhere close to driving like you all did! You even made the hill climb on Track 1 look easy! It takes me about 4-5 tries just to get up there, and then I usually get aborted for driving too slow before I clear the coins. I never have gotten that coin in the dome still! It's driving me nuts!

  • (damn this 500 limit!)

Btw, I actually was in SF for CAX and drove most of the Track 1 roads! Even snagged some pictures of the Fine Arts Center etc! It was surreal! :)

  • So YOU'RE stv! Heh, I always wondered if they made up the default names on the SF RUSH high score table.

  • Yep. I believe all of the names on the default high score tables were developers: JRAY - Executive Producer AMH - Lead Programmer NAPPO - Programmer RADAR - Art Director RIK - Environment Artist BRIAN UI, Vehicle Artist VECSTER - Environment, Vehicle Artist TENEBRAE - 2D Artist JER0ME - Artist NAGGY - Artist GILA - Artist CONTENDER - Designer There might have also been a PITFIEND (consumer Artist) and KENNY (Designer). but memory fails me.
  • I'm pretty sure Ed Logg was on the original SF Rush n64 version.

  • Correct, but my list and the video are from the original arcade version.

  • Yes , but i have the original special edition version , thanks !

  • You're right, I went up to the only arcade left around here that has this game and those names were on the high score board.

It's kinda lame when there's no one else to challenge for high scores, apparently I'm the only one up there that's made an "account" on the machine.

  • My friends and I use to play this on the dreamcast a few too many years ago. Such a good game.

  • This Is The Best Game On Nintendo 64

  • Unless the programmers hid something, no you can't get the "extra" coins.

  • Ok so i can play this online lol ? i would really enjoyed this game if i can play it on my pc that be cool it you could explain how lol ?

  • How did you record this from a emulator or what i never see arcade rush videos o.O

  • "All clips were recorded in the lab to videotape"

That means just what it says: Jeff Allen brought over a VHS cart, piped the output from the actual physical arcade game to the cart and pressed the record button on the VHS deck.

You could probably do something similar to a retail arcade unit if you owned one or had permission to dig into the cabinet - I know we used VHS decks and left them recording INSIDE the cabinet when we field tested the games!

  • Yeah i read that after i posted it lol but since you worked on the gmae could i ask you why on track three and four there are 101 coins on thr tracks =P like after getting 1000 on those tracks i noticed there are tokens that you can't get too was this just a mistake or is there a way to get them =P

  • No, not a mistake.

  • O.O is there a way to get them ? Sorry to ask so many question but i played this game for a long time and it is one of my favorite games of all pretty much so its really cool to find some one who was apart of making it

  • So Atari always uses next generation (SUPER)computers?

  • excellent game, thanks for your hard work

  • Fantastic work...just brilliant. Rush2049 is what games are all about. Used to play it until the early hours until I finally couldn't keep my eyes open. Thanks for your work!!

  • Hey Stv, ahhhh brings back great memories. I really enjoyed working on this game, definetely the best memories of my career. Hope all is well, take care mate. Radar/Flugan or just plain ol Adrian.

  • This is a great game, nice video. I noticed there is one difference in the arcade version. They tell you the location you are in on the lower left corner of the screen which I think is kind of neat. The console versions (N64, Dreamcast) does not have that.

  • hello !!! good video

that version of the rush 2049 is of arcade ???

    correct???

possibly chance of the have PC rush 2049 T. E.???

sorry my english i am brasiliam!!

  • Yes. The version you see is the Arcade version. I don't know if T.E. will ever reach the PC. I remember that there were many Rushers on the online highscore tables from Brazil! Thanks for the comment.

    P.S.

Props go out to JRAY, AMH, NAPPO, RADAR, RIK, BRIAN, VECSTER, TENEBRAE, JER0ME, NAGGY, GILA, and CONTENDER for providing the competition.

    STV
