Border Collies are easy to train. They are always listening. You just have to bond with them. Food isn't their ultimate reward. Toys are or giving them a job is. And if you want their attention you have to get them to look you in the eye. Bonding is required if you want them to give you attention. They are too high strung and are too busy working.
I disagree that this dog is focused on an "imaginary herd of sheep" and that is why she is having trouble listening. everything about her body language says she is fearful. Also not sure what you mean by "looking away is a typical border collie behavior.". Looking away is a typical "I'm nervous" behavior for any breed. She's showing signs of being fearful of you, but you then get closer to her, so she shows more signs of being fearful, hoping it will increase the distance between you and her.
Soo true, Bubbles was probably wanting her owner. They aren't difficult at all to train and no it isn't typical for them to look away. They are the epitome of focus, but they are also 1 person/family dogs. If they don't know you, and not trained to listen to others fat chance. Definitely a breed whose trust you have to earn first. My own BC is like that, he knows his name but if he doesn't know you he just ignores you unless its a training session.
I would hate to be a trainer and read all the rude stupid comments. I think you were doing everything right. I am not a trainer but have trained all of my dogs, all different breeds. I now have a BC. Very intelligent but the hardest dog to train. You have to gain there trust in order to get them to respond to you. I am still working on getting my dog to focus on me while out on walks. I've used treats, toys , clicker training . I'm making slow progress. She's awesome at home though, very obe
it really looks like the dog wants to run away.... hahah a herd of squirrels?.funny. i dont think shes useless, just think shes treating the dog like a pet cat or something.. and no they not hard to train but they can have problems like trust if they were not handled properly as puppies. this dog doesn't look difficult to me, just looks a bit intimidated by that woman...
Ok ur dog is pulling away from u because she wants you to calm down. U forcing her on a tight leash like that is really intimidating. Poor dog wouldn't u hate to be her
This lady doesn't seem to have a clue on how to train a dog. If the dog isn't interested in the treats then get something that does interest it. A frisbee, a ball or anything else dogs love to play with. Also getting down to their level also helps. This lady needs to be trained by Zak George. He's one of the best trainers I know of and it will be his techniques that I use when I get a BC.
Can someone give me some suggestions of some names for a black white tip tail puppy? She's more then 4 months old now and I still can't find a name for her, I don't want quite names I want a name that inspires dread, her mother's name is Cobra and I want a name to match her mother's, not necessarily a snake breed name.
@kailichia that would be perfect except for the fact that in my language rattle is the same with tinker bell, sounds like this "clopotzel" and I don't like it. I could use the english word but no one can pronounce it here :D Thx for the suggestion.
If you don't want respect from the dog give it that tug. In the end YOU will be the loser. BC's need to be treated with respect. Only then you will get respect from the dog in return and he/she is willfully wanting to work with you. I know because we had on BC for over 12 Yrs. We just started again with a new pup of 9,5 Wks old. That will be a great companion as well.
MOVE THE FOOD TO MY EYES. LOOK AT MY EYES, DOG. LOOK AT MY EYES, GOD DARNIT! and the dog is like ' who the hell are you? get away from me!' LOL XD herd of squirrels...
i only watch expertvillage because it is incredibly stupid but also quite funny XD
@earcolos i think it depends on the dog. I bought a border collie 8 months ago under the assumption that they're smart dogs and easy to train. Alfie still pees overnight, chews things he's not supposed to, ignores calls when out walking... I wouldn't change him for anything though :-)
Did she really say herd of squrrels?! OMG. This lady is soooo stupid. I mean... DUH SHE IS NERVOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really, you can see that all the dog wanted to do was get away from her.
If the dog liked her, it woule have focused on her, she had done something to that dog before the beginning of the video, the dog hates her.....won't even take the treat !
this was a total watse of my time. the woman pulled the dogs lead and forced it to look at her and the lick the woman said was showing she was nervous was probaly the dog begging her to stop.
plus, when the woman said the dogs name for the first time, the dog almost went down with her ears pulled back.
and one thing about ppl saying this dog has a bad name. the dog doesnt know what her name means so it doesnt really matter what her name is! if sumone named their dog bullshit, the dog wouldnt care..duh.
the dog was stressed out, thats why she didnt want to take the treats. or maybe she doesnt get motivated by food but stressed out she was. and the reason why she didnt look at the woman was bcoz maybe she isnt so open with ppl she doesnt know. the woman shouldnt have kept the leash so tight all the time and the thing when she used her leg and pushed the dog to sit!! WTF?? the woman was also bending over the dog and like, forcing the dog to do stuff...i didnt like this.
Except for the "set your dog up to succeed" statement that woman not only is a boring and below average trainer, she knows NOTHING about Border Collies.

This video is even funnier after reading peoples comments!
Wow... seriously, border collie behavior is NOT to look away. and train them with food? haha, mine won't even consider food if they are "working". they'll spit it out. BAD example of how to train a border collie.
I give this lady credit for trying, but no credit for being even remotely correct.
That dog is simply scared and it's showing signs of avoidance in response. The trainer obviously has a long way to go in understanding the body language of dogs, which is rather disturbing considering how vital that aspect of training is. Why she's attempting to teach anyone about dogs with her level of skill and outdated methods is beyond me.
I would recommend anyone interested to read a dog psychology book such one of Stanley Coren's books to at least get the basics regarding dog behavior.
Looking away is not a typical border collie thing, a typical border collie characteristic is to STARE DOWN, and she isnt "looking at a herd of squirrels, she's avoiding her, the dog is scared shitless
