Somewhere on youtube I'm sure there is a full length declassified video of this operation (the narrator has sweaty armpits and smokes a pipe). Check out "Operation Crossroads" on wikipedia. This underwater explosion was called "Baker" shot. There is a whole section on cleanup after baker and there's a picture of sailors scrubbing the deck of one ship. The VA had to create a special designation for these vets -- "atomic vets".

The only reason that you arent speaking German right now is because Hitler decided to cancel Operation Sea Lion. The RAF had been literally eliminated by this time. Had the plan gone through England would have been taken over without much of a fight. Also the only reason that you had enough supplies was because America was shipping them over. Russia did have an advantage yes, but when Germany finished you off they would have to fight on only one front.

This was a test of how a underwater nuke in shallow water would damage boat hulls. The ship was a WWII Liberty ship called the E2; it was, of course, unmanned. It righted itself after rolling under the wall of water. It had already lived through Wahoo a week before , but was pretty severely damaged.
