@bhowell3two Believe it or not the '74 V-8 Gremlin out weighed the the '74 V-8 Hornet 2dr post sedan by 93lb's. So I'm guessing the Hornet would have an edge on the Gremlin.

The one and only new car I ever owned. Had 140,000 one it, when it was stolen while I was in St. Louis. Didn't even report it to the cops. I would get 25 mpg. , but was glad to have it gone.
I had a 1976 Gremlin, worst car I've ever owned. It was entirely possible to read a Russian novel during the pause between stepping on the gas and feeling any semblance of forward motion.
My uncle had one of these during the 80s and up to mid 90s. He's never cared about his cars yet this one proved to be badass enough to last 15 years. I didn't like it before, but nowadays that I'm old enough to appreciate it (and so is my cousin, his son), the car's gone. Dammit.
In the 1970s, it was expected that a new car would have rattles and some things that needed to be fixed. I remember the 77 Plymouth my dad bought had to go back to dealer to fix a bunch of stuff. Now days no one would put up with such poor quality, but back then I think people just accepted it.
@Seattlecarnut - I was around in the 70s. Respectfully, there's no way the AMC Gremlin, and the Pacer can compare to the quality of modern Nissans and Hondas of the same size class. The modern unibody Japanese units are very fuel efficient, quiet, & have superior survivability accident stats due to the crush zones and torque box safety features. I very much miss those times, but appreciate today's vehicles.
Hey, at least she didn't buy the 1974 Chevy Vega. That thing would've split in half over the bridge - which looks like the Universal Studio tram tour! xD
I'm European, I cant really think of that car as sensible at all! I understand the one with V8, but I think of it more as a toy, "light" weight and oversized engine. But the other ones.. Sixcylinder engine and auto that drinks gas and isnt really that fast anyway. You could fill the exact same need with a Golf or Honda Civic that consumed a third. If it wasnt for the cheap gas you got it wouldnt be useable at all! A small, ugly, dull AND thirsty car with little room inside compared to is size..
The Gremlin with its 6 Cylinder got just as good miles to the gallon as the Chevy Vega and Ford Pinto with their 4 cylinder engines, cost less and was faster. For a cash strapped automaker it wasn't a bad car at all. No on to why people didn't just drive Golfs or Civics... As an owner of an MK1 Diesel Golf I can tell you that yes, they do get excellent mileage, but they're slow as hell. I just recently took a little vacation and going up hills on the motorway was a disaster.
@Zerginfantry You need a Golf GTD. Same as GTI, only with a turbodiesel. ;) And for a family car, Golf MK3 station wagon. What I am saying is that you Americans have a tendency of "wasting" A normal European car has an engine of between 1600-2000cc, which is perfectly adequate for daily use in a normal car. Even the smallest of the American-built cars had a 2,5 liter, and a mid-sized "poor mans car" had a 4 liter six! And almost always automatic transmission. Why??
@KapteinOpel The 4.2L engine in the gremlin was because cost of retooling would have been to expensive to do - that engine has been around since the early sixties and had been it every thing AMC made. But yeah, I understand the point you're trying to make - America hasn't made a really small car with a small engine in a long time. Also, you have to realize, the Gremlin and other cars like it weren't considered 'Mid Size" in 70's America - they were compacts!
@KapteinOpel I could barley manage to do 45 on some parts of the trip, as the power my MK1 makes is horrible. Then theirs the space - it's an ok size for a cash strapped college student such as myself, but for someone with a family it's not good at all. And for uglyness and dullness? Well, I find it more unique and beautiful than most of the cars on the road today!
@Zerginfantry But I think your Golf might need a tune-up, they shouldnt be THAT dull.. I learned to drive in a 1974 Golf MK1 with an 1100 cc ;) I remember my dad wouldnt go over 55 mph(90 km/h) because of the RPM got so high, but there was more to get. For daily use to work, to the store etc, no problem! It accelerated in a natural pace, and mostly kept its speed up. But worn diesels often have a tendency of syrupy behavior though.. Get a 1600 turbodiesel engine ;)
My dad had one in the late 80a early 90s not a bad car,in 89 I turned 1 and had a hat on that says here comes trouble,I guess we were fishing and I got the car out of gear and was going down hill towards the lake and all you could see is my here comes trouble hat and my mom and dad got the car stopped,Thinking about it child seat came up fast cause we didn't wear seatbelts or anything. You guys are probably older than 22 you know what I'm talking about
So... lemme get this straight. American Motors is advertising that their dealerships and service departments do not send African-Americans to the back of the line when they come in for service?
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing! That was funny to see a black woman say that they didn't send her to be the back of the line. I can only imagine what people would say if this ad came out these days.
I never owned one(Thank God)but I knew people that owned AMC vehicles. And the overwhelming feedback was completely negative. AMC vehicles were cheap, badly styled and poorly engineered. If you had one that was trouble-free, good for you.
I'm pretty sure you're right. It would feel terrible to have gone to a dealership and bought an AMC (on credit with 4 years left to go) .. unless, of course, it was the beginning of the season of Ba Ba Blacksheep or Dance Fever and you really had no place to go .. in which case you'd be OK with it .. hahahah
I learned to drive on my grandma's Gremlin (for good measure, my grandpa had an AMC Pacer). They were also the perpetual prize on the early 70's game show "Gambit." Not pretty, but they were great on gas .... which was extremely important in the 70's!
I had one I bought used. Yep, it was ugly as homemade sin, but when I got hit by some stupid kid who just got his license, while he was driving his dad's brand new 79 Chevy, the "guardrail" built inside the Gremlin's door tore off the Chevy's energy-absorbing bumper, and damaged the sheet metal of the Chevy badly enough that the car had to be towed. The Gremlin had some damage to the door that was easily fixed.
this is gold, they don't promise the car won't rattle, they just say " weeeeel....if it does, well take a look " possibly the reason there are so many around today...(cough)....so many...
I think she said that because she wasn't paying for it. I guess in the 70s people didn't pay much attention to OTHER connotations that may be attached to a person's statements. But like you said, WOW !!!
Give me back the 70s as well!! You can't make a great commerical like this any more. If you did they would say you are a racist. I want some corinthian leather. screw the cows and hippies!!
,,oh yeah, Angela, she would give me candy at Halloween in massive quantities, she was never cheap with us kids & gave everybody that award winning smile !
I once owned a 74 Gremlin, it had a 304 with a three speed the car was seriously fast. I belive the AMX and the Gremlin sat on the same wheelbase one was just cooler looking than the other.
@tombrad111 I had a 74 Gremlin with a 258 six cylinder. It would start everytime at minus 30 in North Dakota. I should have ordered the V8 instead. It was a screamer., that 304. They don't give us enough spaces on one posting to tell all the problems I had with that car. I saw one on a dealer's lot the other day with a 289 in it. $4900. It had no bumpers. I had to laugh.
Remember the commercial when the girl pulls in the gas station and the attendant asks, "Where's the rest of your car Toots?" LOL! Yep, AMC did design some strange body designs. Rebel wasn't bad though. Of course the AMX was the cream of the crop for them. I've been messing with cars since I was 14. The AMX "worked" at the drags due to the wheelbase. Plenty of weight over the rear wheels. I did see a tubbed Gremlin the other day with a blown (supercharger) small block, trick paint, etc. WILD!!
The Gremlin was made on the same platform as the Hornet. Their aim was to make a car as distinctive as the VW bug. anyone here ever sit in the back seat of a Gremlin? Right over the axle, it was a kidney puncher. Then they came out with the Pacer, which was nicknamed the Goldfish Bowl. If you think the Gremlin was ugly, the Pacer took the prize. AMC stood for "Ain't My Car."
AMC's chief designer actually penned the basic Gremlin design on a NorthWest Air Lines Air Sick Bag while in flight. It was first on a Javelin/AMX body as a concept. But ofcourse that changed to the model we now both love and hate. What I see in all this is that AMC brought out a great deal of emotions in people. They either love it or hate it. You really don't see that out of other automobile companies except for the Dodge Ram Pick up truck. AMC= All Most Car
Unfortunately, you needed all the warrantee protection you could get. Bought a new Gremlin back in 1972 and it was just a huge pile of steaming crap, even compared to other cars of the day.
Every car sold today (foreign or domestic) is light years ahead in terms of quality, reliability and safety. RIP, American Motors.
Yea, I have heard many people say the the Gremlin and other AMC cars were crap and worse. Most of these people are GM/Ford/Mopar fans. I guess the proof of AMC quality was a comment from a Car and Driver staffer stating that the best quality/reliability car comes from Wisconsin and not Detroit. Unbiased statement from an automotive expert. Besides the second proof is the fact that in GM stables Saturn is dead and Pontiac is dying. Were is their high quality?
I have read a lot of your responses and I believe a point is being lost. In the 70's most dealers service depts allowed up scale car owners to be serviced BEFORE economy car owners, no matter who was first. This was a perk to buy higher priced models. The more money you spent, the more important you are. American Motors changed all that with the Buyer Protection Plan 1 and II. This commercial had nothing to do with racism in the original run, but it is really easy to read that as you look back.
The French are good at destroying anything that is or was a good product.

I never owned one(Thank God)but I knew people that owned AMC vehicles. And the overwhelming feedback was completely negative. AMC vehicles were cheap, badly styled and poorly engineered. If you had one that was trouble-free, good for you.
stlgtrace 2 years ago

But with better build quality and the fact that you won't get stuck inside while the thing ignites because of a simple rear-end collision.

I once owned a 74 Gremlin, it had a 304 with a three speed the car was seriously fast. I belive the AMX and the Gremlin sat on the same wheelbase one was just cooler looking than the other.
tombrad111 2 years ago
The AMX was a hot looking car. Very bold. Too bad it didn't catch on more.
JET997u 2 years ago

WILD!!
ILoveLauriePartridge 2 years ago
I had a 1976 Gremlin. Ugly car. I didnt care because I got it for free.
kzfive 2 years ago
The Gremlin was made on the same platform as the Hornet. Their aim was to make a car as distinctive as the VW bug. anyone here ever sit in the back seat of a Gremlin? Right over the axle, it was a kidney puncher. Then they came out with the Pacer, which was nicknamed the Goldfish Bowl. If you think the Gremlin was ugly, the Pacer took the prize. AMC stood for "Ain't My Car."
soco13466 2 years ago

RIP, American Motors.
wave54 2 years ago
Yea, I have heard many people say the the Gremlin and other AMC cars were crap and worse. Most of these people are GM/Ford/Mopar fans. I guess the proof of AMC quality was a comment from a Car and Driver staffer stating that the best quality/reliability car comes from Wisconsin and not Detroit. Unbiased statement from an automotive expert. Besides the second proof is the fact that in GM stables Saturn is dead and Pontiac is dying. Were is their high quality?
jeepster02 2 years ago 2
I have read a lot of your responses and I believe a point is being lost. In the 70's most dealers service depts allowed up scale car owners to be serviced BEFORE economy car owners, no matter who was first. This was a perk to buy higher priced models. The more money you spent, the more important you are. American Motors changed all that with the Buyer Protection Plan 1 and II. This commercial had nothing to do with racism in the original run, but it is really easy to read that as you look back.

Thanks for pointing that out I was born in 1974 and was not aware there was a discrepincy like that.
