What the camera doesn't show is the drop-off once you clear the point. The terrain slopes gradually, like most launches, and then the dramatic drop-off: an extra 4000' of elevation in a split second! That was the most breathtaking aspect of the flight for me.
I got my commercial/instrument/CFI/multi-engine, etc, ratings, but once I learned to hang glide I rarely went back to power planes!
Like any aircraft you need training and respect for them, but they aren't hard to fly at all.
As far as "stay in the air" that depends on the conditions. On a great day it's almost hard to come down. On many other days, you'll search in vain for lift. Ocean breezes are a reliable way to stay up, but desert thermals and cross-countries are the most fun.
a nice comment. good description. interesting to hear about your ratings. i allways thought i'd move onto planes but after learning to hanglide. dont think ill bother. this comment kind of confirms it. after all youve done it and still feel the same. you just cant beat hanggliding. and yosemite looks beautiful.
That was so peaceful but if you could angle the camera slightly lower so we can see the ground better that would be nice. The landing looked scary and painful though.... :\
dpawkng, Hang Gliding is a breathe taking way to fly. It is easy enough to control (if you can jog with 70 lbs on your shoulders, you can hang glide). I recommend taking a quick class on Hang Gliding, you can either do tandem or solo; I went solo.
They say ghosts haunt the place of their death. If you plummeted to your death in Yosemite, would that be such a bad thing?..Better than a dusty old house or mossy old castle,if you ask me.
awesome video that looks so much fun! i recently went there and climed half dome to the top and yosemite falls and vernal and nevada falls. that looks so amazing where can i sign up for that?
that was interesting. wish i had the guts to do that but falling a 1000 feet don't interest me. how long did the whole flight from start to finish take? must of been great. it would of sucked if when you came into the LZ there was a bunch of hungary bears waiting. You look like a giant bug walking at the end there. ha!
great flight but put the camera on the front and bring it into focus or else it is just a waste of time and batteries. I certainly hope you are using rechargables!Do it again and get quality video instead of just a lame record that you did it.
At first,I thought he was flipping somebody off at about 2:20,but it's a thumbs up.If people were flying kites at Glacier Point it would probably be no big deal, but I'm sure there are some who would want to stop the hang gliding. Two BIG thumbs up for this, you guys, thanx!!!
Did that landing hurt? lol

Is this still legal? If it is how advanced of a pilot does this take?

Yosemite is without doubt the most beautiful place I have ever been to

When you hangglide do you use your body as a rudder to steer? Because thats what it looked like you were doing.

how much flight time can you get with a jump like that?

Dear All,
I ahve some questions about psychology:
(1) why do we enjoy gliding and flying?
(2) why do we love sport relate to flying and aviation?
(3) How does gliding and flying benefits our personal well-being in term of mental, social and physical health?
THANK YOU IN ADVNACE for your creative ideas and brainstrom!!! :)

How long did the flight last???
BNELI 2 years ago
15 minutes. The park services only allows us to fly in the early morning when there is no lift.

im interested in what lift you used on that flight. or was this simply top to bottom? if so wow long flight
FCbisleybob 3 years ago
Yosemite flights are limited by park rules to early morning "sled rides".

@dpawkng It'ss difficult to "plummet" to your death. Todays hang gliders automatically stabilize when you stop controlling it.

True! I'm usually really dialed into the Yosemite landing but this time I was a little distracted by the fear of damaging my camera.
