If you live in northern Illinois you have to get used to this stuff happening. I am in huntley which is about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs from the city and we didn't get the thunder and lighting.

@swarso1 It happens in Chicago because of the ambient heat produced by the city, warms the air up ahead of the front, and when they collide and intermingle not only do you get lake effect snow but you get thunder as well.

I was watching the weather during this blizzard because I live in Michigan. Thunder and Lightning is possible because just as with a rain storm..there was lift enough to create the instability for rising clouds to produce thunder/lightning. As it hit my area. The dry slot lessened the snow quite a bit, but Chicago, as you know got hit hard..

i live in Pittsburgh , Pa and never seen or heard of lightning or thunder in a snowstorm , thats pretty wild

i had over 6 feet of wind draft inn my driveway most it was like 3 feet almost then at one point of it was 6 took 2 snow blowers n 3 hours to clean up my driveway :(
