  • Kevin Moore is a genius mike portnoy said if he didn't leave DT the band would have disbanded which sucks cause WDADU Images, Awake, are all great cds. They had a chemistry in that lineup which had a sound. That sound left with Kevin moore. DT still sounded like DT but when Rudess joined it lost that rough edge even more so when Iron Mike left last year.

  • Anyone know why Mark Zonder wasn't playing with these guys at this time?

  • 6:00 - 6:03 - Priceless!

  • Comment removed

  • bass player with ronaldo´s heair

  • The thing I've always loved about Kevin Moore is that he appreciates creating an atmosphere in a song. Even if that means him doing very little. Rudess tries to do way to much

  • Man if this don't prove Kevin Moore was the brains behind DT then nothing will...

Some dude in the audience yells out at the intro "Metropolis"

  • freminick123 btw, beautiful has only one "l" and make sure never to commence a sentence with a conjunction... Grammar counts in large amounts!

  • That's mature. Can we not respect each other as musicians?

  • Great!

  • Hey all! Went on youtube to rip the latest FAGADELLIC post by Jordan Rudess: "YesterGAY" This crap rendition was dedicated to John Lennon!

Lo and behold I am blocked! Rudess has violated the most sacred principle of a free republic, FREE SPEECH, and blocked truthful criticism.

Why would cyborg throw a hissy fit over what a "small potato" like me? Keyboardist of the world unite!

Declare war on the fraud that is Jordan Rudess who uses cheat sheets to play his parts!

    LONG LIVE KEVIN MOORE!!

  • @Zakariah1971 What is this...?!&*$ fucking gay comment. Can you recognize talent, do you have one talent? Your most beautifull talent is to write the THE fucking gay comment ever writed on youtube. Man if I see you in the street you will be really dead. And if you say something like: you are in front of your computer you can do nothing! Give me an address and I will make a pleasure to come see your face

  • @freminick123

    don't feed the troll.

  • their sound is kind of weak

  • The only bullshitting here is coming straight out of Jordan Rudess' keyboard!

  • Behold the genius from DreamTheater playing hookie from the band with Fates Warning! Is Moore wearing corduroy?? No matter, everything Moore touches turns to platinum!

  • Portnoy is an ass! He is responsible for destroying dt. In '94 he and Petrucci were voted #1 on their instruments, and rubbed it in Moore's face that Rudess won as "#1 new keyboard talent." Only problem, Moore was not new talent in '94. So he went "oh you want rudess? let me get him on the phone-i quit!" Only problem, Moore was still under contract for five more dt cds. I am trying to get eastwest records to sue dt for "breach of contact." Moore is back in the US so they can serve his ass!

  • @Zakariah1971 Thanks...did not know that info. MoKevMo

  • Portnoy

  • @Zakariah1971 sucks

  • "DAMN, that sounds like me!!!" What Kevin Moore exclaimed after listening to the song "Trouble" by Coldplay...

  • This is like, flawless. I'd think this was a studio version if not for the video...

  • Is that Nick D'virgilio on the drums??

  • @marcelreno yeah

  • Kevin Moore is kind of an asshole though... Look at his face when he glances over at Jim Matheos! He has that grin like " yeah, I am still under contract with Dream Theater for five moore albums, but they think they can write better with Rudess on keys... Now watch what happens he he he!"

  • @Zakariah1971 lol....Now that the cards are played, who comes off as the bigger hole? Moore or Portnoy? 'Hey guys, go home and sit and wait while I do my thing...Don't do anything until I come back though. I want to play in other bands but you guys shouldn't get together without me." Ever think Portnoy may be responsible for the stumbling of Dream Theater....Twice?

  • Who is that Mozart on keys????

  • @Zakariah1971

The one and only, Kevin Moore :))

  • fuck!! where is mark zonder??

  • Ah, one of the original prog metal bands. This is my favorite song of theirs. I see a lot of comparison between Fates Warning And Dream Theater. Personally, I like DT better. LaBrie in the early 90s was doing something no other metal singer was doing and Petrucci and Portnoy are legends! Both bands are awesome. Let us not compare, but enjoy two awesome bands!

  • best FW song ever!!!

  • emotions....

  • @DrVelvetProductions

    Again.For a motherfucker.

Fates Warning sucks when you hear them

    playing now.

Fates Warning was an impressive band

    those days.

Now theres not much left now.

Matheos seems to be very powerless.

    Nowaday!

    DO YOU UNDERSTAND

  • @chrismaxpayne

I saw them on June 4 in Connecticut on the Parallels reunion tour, and they were as good as ever. Matheos doesn't shred like he used to, but that isn't necessarily the mark of a guitarist who lost his fire, simply one who is exploring a different style. Plus, Aresti was there, and he still shreds as well as ever.

  • What's with all this Ray Alder versus James LaBrie nonsense?

John Arch is more talented than both, so there.

  • That is Nick D'Virgilio on drums. Spock's Beard musta given him the night off.

  • FW is a part of my live!!!better was a daily prog exporience.Whats left. Nothing!!!zonder laughs when he is seeing this drummer doing His first lessons.Perfect symmetrie was Fates not the old Matheos sleeping. Good Night!

  • @chrismaxpayne Words can't explain how little sense that made.

  • @DrVelvetProductions I so fuckin agree!

  • I'm starting with some other prog metal bands (I was introduced to prog with DT) and would like to get some suggestions about which album would be the best to start with in case of FW, Queensryche, Riverside and maybe some suggestions about other good prog metal bands out there (but I don't really like too heavy stuff, I otherwise listen to a lot of different music, but my style is fusion/psychedelic/symphonic=)).

  • @andrewman12 oh my GOD man, you really have no idea....

    I like both bands anyway.

  • If you like Kevin Moore, feel free to visit my fan website: The Mooreatorium. Search for it on Google.

  • Is that Nick D'Virgilio on the drums? I'm just geting into this band so I'm kinda noob :P

  • You are correct!

  • Hey guys, please, stop comparing LaBrie and Alder. Tgey're very different singers. I like Alder's voice better than LaBrie's but it doesn't mean that LaBrie Is worst. They just different. And very good, both of them.

  • andrewman12 i believe that if you listen to No Exit alnum you wil find out that Alder pushed himself to hell too..i've seen both Alder and LaBrie perfoming live, twice.Alder is much better, though i must admit that LaBrie back to images was marvelous too,but 17 years have passed since then..natural decline..as i think he has damaged his voice chords at some point of his career, not completely sure

  • Then you haven't seen LaBrie livein the last 3 or 4 years. He has totally rejuvenated his singing to the point where he is stronger than ever. He has even been (consistently) hitting the high note on 'Learning to Live' live. When I first starting listening to Dream Theater in '94, I thought he was the weak link. But the last 2 tours he has been amazing live.

  • Are you sure?, to me Fates Warning is superior to DT from a musical perspective. I would agree with you if you are meaning that DT's musicians are better playing their instruments from a technical point of view (with the exception of La Brie who is clearly a mediocre singer,as live performances show). However from when you listen to the balance, deepness and emotion in FW songs and the tendency to fireworks in DT, then you find FW to be superior. At least that is my Point of View.

  • You are right. Fates Warning was first, and I'm not sure why LaBrie did not join them other than that it just wasn't a fit for him. I'm glad he ended up with Dream Theater. It used to be Fates Warning with Dream Theater. Now it is the other way around. I'm trying to find more things I like about this band.

  • If you are a fan of early DT (like images and words) then you should listen to Perfect Symmetry ("Part Of The Machine" and "Nothing left to say" are two songs from that album that you can find in youtube).

  • LaBrie pushed himself to hell and back with his voice and went way over the top. He may have done the same thing with this group too. This guy has a sweet voice, but nothing like what LaBrie was pushing at the Images and Words point. His live performances have gone down hill, but he still is a good singer. The only singer form this group that could compete with LaBrie is Arch.

  • I respect your point but I do not share it. Also I think your comparison is unfair if it is based on this particular video. Either you choose to compare both singers at their best time or you choose to compare them at the present...

  • Zonder is much better than Portnoy in any aspect of playing. IMHO :) And Matheos is very very very good too, maybe he isn't so fast as Petrucci, but there are no much people in the world who faster than him :)

  • True yeah, it's always so subjective though. One likes one food where another one doesn't. I always liked Kevin's keyboard parts were best in DT.

  • is that nick de vergilio on drums.. what ever, a good piece.. saw them support DT on the uk leg of the seasons tour just after kev left.. dont remember them as tight as this..good post..

  • glad ray grew his hair back ...

  • This song is a masterpiece. Best prog metal song every written.

Moving lyrics, perfectly fitting atmosphere, top-notch singing (I'd say Disconnected has Ray Alder's best vocal performance of any album he's made).

  • ever written*

  • I'm a huge fan of FW - have been since the mid 80's. Also a DT fan, but I prefer FW. Why? Because FW's music has, in my opinion, much more emotion and feeling put into it. Sure, FW may not be as technically complicated as DT, but I feel they are the better band. Granted, DT has plenty of songs with emotion, and no doubt the guys in DT are all amazing musicians - but my vote goes to FW. Both of these bands are extremely underrated because their prog style doesn't fit into corporate radio.

  • Why does it have to be a competition anyways? I like lots of prog bands for different reasons.

  • music is not simply an instrumental clinic. FW songs are full of emotions, thi is why may people loves them...

  • What's so funny is most all Prog Bands want James LaBrie to guest in their album, and he is happy to for the right price I imagine, because he has the following and the prestige of being one of the best Prog singers ever in the best band. He's a legend...I don't know a thing about Fates Warning singer. I bet Kev felt this was not near as fulfilling playing Dream Theater stuff. My honest opinion he won't show his face with DT is because he fucked up in 94 with leaving the band.

  • Do yourself a favor go and listen to "Still Life", and then come to tell us how does Ray Alder Sing. By the way, Fates Warning invited James LaBrie to sing (Parallels 1991) much before DT had released any serious music (with the exception of YTSE Jam). FW was helping DT back then, they had already a name for themselves and DT was just starting. Both are good bands, but you have to keep in mind that the style of Images and Words was already present 3yr before in Perfect Symmetry, which I prefer.

  • By "Still Life" I meant Fates Warning´s live CD from 1998 (the same year than Once In A LIVEtime, so you can get both CDs and compare)

  • I need to listen to the whole album from FW. I have listened to some of the songs. But these songs would have to trump "Learning To Live", "Metropolis", "Take The Time" and "Surrounded" to make me think it was a better album...fat chance my friend. All the same, I respect FW and think they are a great Prog outfit that influenced DT in a wonderful way. I'm sure they respect each other very much. FW is a great escape from musical monotony.

  • lol after seeing DT live vids and all that, you see other drum kits and think "wow, that's wimpy"

  • it's not about the amount of Drums! It's how you play them :) Ask Mike Portnoy he actually enjoys smaller kits and Dream Theater is like a fantastic band but so is Fates Warning they are the fathers of Progressive Metal if you don't believe me go ask Mike Portnoy himself. :)

    I love both bands!

    Cheers.

  • I probably should say that it's about time that I say that I was joking. . gee the thumbs down I got, and I agree with you. I mean Neil Peart in the mid 70's had a little kit, and it grew with the diversity he needed and gained, same with Portnoy. Gee don't take it seriously, other viewers aha.

  • It's all good man LOL

    Cheers!

    Keep Proggin lol !

  • Same with guitars too, you dont need a $3000 guitar, I have a $750 schecter, sounds just as good as my friends les paul, kills my friend because he paid 6k for his les paul, lol

  • That's very true man I agree :) . Guitars is a personal thing but as for a Les Paul made by Gibsons they are over rated now. Gibson has really lowered it's quality control in one store you would find a good Gibson sounding like a beast and in another store the same model would sound horrendous... Ernie Ball Music Man's,Steinbergers,Conklin Guitars,Suhr Guitars,Andersons these are great companies that have really good peices and a phenomenal product :)

    Cheers.

  • cool prs guitar! love that

  • Aabsolutelly f*cking amazing. Great song, just the way I like. FW is awesome!

  • learning to live is a masterpiece

  • love kevin moore's synth work on this track....most redeeming feature because their is no zonder and aresti. miss dibaise too. ALL HAIL MOOOOOOOOORE!!

  • Nick Di Virgilio doing the impossible: replacing Mark Zonder on drums.

  • the divine, kevin moore

  • This is it, my all time favorite prog rock song, especially the latter half - pure feeling.

  • Fates Warning The Best

  • the grand Kevin Moore, congratulations

  • I'd congratulate Kevin. He's Playing with Fates Warning ;)

I do really like Dream Theater. But in all honesty I like them because they remind me of Fates Warning.

  • @WeeMadArthur1

Funny, I only like DTs first albums ... no Moore, no glory ...

  • @MACKEYBOARD I miss Kevin Moore - Dream Theater :(, never forget Images and Words and Awake.

  • exactly like old dream theater stuff....just kinda empty :S missin sumthin but dnot know what

  • Dream Theater misses the thrashy feel that Fates Warning has

  • You wouldn't think the drums were generic if this were the drummer that actually recorded with them (Mark Zonder). Zonder is a much more well-rounded drummer than Portnoy.

  • FW use technique "TASTEFULLY" DT can't control their egos. They don't have the character to recognise the beauty of occasional simplicity. If you want technical druming, listen to Mark Zonder on "Still Life." Listen to the 50 minute "A Pleasant Shade of Gray." Also, I would consider myself an intermediate guitarist, and I can honestly say that Petrucci plays like a robot, predictable and redundant, all skill, no passionate originality.

  • WOW

Really .... I am a true DT fan but love FW as well

Petrucci is FAR from predictable ...... You reply to his playing style ...... is predictable however !!

    Oh well

    Agree to Disagree I guess

  • Learning to Live anyone?

  • How can you say that about Petrucci. Glasgow Kiss, Erotomania? No originality?

  • I have to agree with you vaporarrow. Cant wait for another innovative Fates Warning album.

  • thetime the skill are the same, only they use them in a different way. I like Kevin Moore much more.

  • KEVIN RULSS MAN

  • Indeed! =3

  • Agreed!!!

  • amazing how good ray keeps his vocals together here while enjoying himself so much

  • Fing incredible!

  • I agree withsith9157 and jackpaice. I can't decide between two different keyboardists.

  • I listened to this song for the first time and I instantly fell in love with it. One of the most powerful pieces of music I've heard.

  • putain de groupe!!!!!!! pas assez reconnus....

  • oh my god this is shit...

  • I dont know why peoples are always saying who is the best keyboard player between Kevin Moore or Jordan Rudess. They are amazing and different, Kevin is better in composition like Wait For Sleep but Jordan has a better skill. Thats it

  • Jordan may be high tech, may have all the degrees in the world but I'll take Kevin's Chroma Key over DT's self-indulgent shreddery anytime, thank you.

Or this. My fave FW track - it blows my mind!

  • dt's not self indulgent nor is it shreddery! god, comon, just couse you prefer kevin, you dont need to bad mouth jordan!no better keybord player in my opinion--

  • They're both awesome

  • Tbh I think that Kevin is better, simply because he doesn't overindulge in solos. If you listen to DT's first three, you'll hear that there are few solos which have pretty much nothing to do with the song as whole (as opposed to most later DT songs).

That said, Rudess is a very good player, he just needs a bit more self-discipline. (as does DT as a whole these days)

Which is why I have always loved later Fates Warning. No unnecessary solos :9

  • kevin its good , derek its good to but jordan its amazing

  • no coz mon kalbo is bittir dan mister kuto..

esto no to dandruff and with a pearly white berd..

    git it??

  • omg!!

Kevin should get back to DT!!

  • No he should never get back to DT

  • why? he made the better dt keyboard solos, he´s still cool man

  • omg, what are you saying? Jordan Rudess are much much better than Kevin Moore! He can play that when he´s slepping..

  • wtf?

Rudess surely can play that "sleeping" but he doesn't write any lyrics... Kev kick his ass in that way and DT needs Kev's lyrics...

  • Is the great great Kevin Moore!!!!!!! Kevin thanks for wdadu, images and words and awake!!!!!!! :(

  • For the record: just paving the way for Dream Theater baby ! Just look at the credits on DT's first 3 albums. THANKS TO FATES WARNING.

  • you mean underrated

  • most awesome piece of rock music ever done

  • cool to se nick d´virgilio(can´t spell) from spock´s beard, on drums...

  • There's one original member in the band, Matheos won't give up.

  • why give up, this is what Jim does .....he makes music

  • I know he's a real musician all the other guys pussed out and quit. He sold his soul to rock and roll! It's impressive how long he's been doing this, I was listening to fates in the 80's

  • Amen, brother. First heard Anarchy Devine in 1987 and have been hooked ever since! I miss Zonder, though.

  • That is Derek Sherinian your talking about

  • Of course it's Kevin Moore! Kevin has nothing to do with Planet X!

  • this is Kevin for sure ...

i have the DVD and if you take a carefully look you recognize him

  • I love early FW the best, thru Perfect Symmetry. This is good but it sounds like Rush gets abducted by aliens or something. Tool has taken over for me since the 90's. They continue to blow my mind with every album and every live show

  • i love dt and jordess is good but kevin is sooo much more colourful. kevin leavning dreamtheater sucked ass.

  • jordan rudess still smokes kevin

  • Too bad Kevin didn't get the recognition he deserved back then. He's doing an amazing job with OSI and Fates Warning.

When I first heard Fates Warning's Disconnected, it made me realize and begin to better understand who the innovators of progressive rock have been (Spock's Beard, FW, DT more-so in past than now, Porcupine Tree, Tool, Dredg, Flower Kings, Riverside, Glass Hammer...). But it started with these guys.

  • err what? do you mean prgressive metal? because there have been progressive rock bands since the 60s. pink floyed are a progressive rock band and there are earlier bands than that. i think you do mean metal but i i'll just say any way just incase. also i think RUSH are also considered precursers of prog metal

  • Yeah, I meant prog metal. I find that most people don't make the distinction. BIG fan of Rush, Yes, Genesis, Kansas, Pink Floyd, King Crimson (alas, only heard In the Court of the Crimson King), and ELP. Prog Rock and Classics are what I grew up on... somehow... in the 90s.

  • zappa is also good and gentle giant 'in a glass house is a pretty good album.

  • God, what an awesome song!!

I also loved and always will enjoy the mood that Moore creates!

Waiting as hell for the new O.S.I. and Fates Warning album...

  • Must...Learn...The...New...Millenium...like...Bassline

    Great playing as always =]

  • Love this song and band...can't listen to this version though. Im glad they didn't stick with this guy on drums. Not even close...

  • 05:20...

i thought they going to play New Millenium by Dream Theater..wahahaha...the same bass lines...

  • KEVIN MOORE ?!?!?!!? whatttttttttt

  • wow!!fates warning with kevin moore..Perfect!!

  • I hope Frank Aresti will continue to play and "record" with Fates (as well as have a "Full-time" drummer on par with Mark [im a Nick and Beard fan too:), but apparently he has a satisfying 9 to 5 job, according to Joey Vera when I saw them for FWX :( -MAVIII(progulus. c o m)<--- for MORE Fates; Prog Rock and Metal :D

  • That drummer doesn't look like Mark Zonder!

Who is he? Why isn't Mark playing?

  • The drummer is Nick D'Virgo who's the drummer and lead singer of Spock's Beard. Mark Zonder left the band after the recording of FWX and is currently playing with Slavior.

  • FYI, Spock's Beard's singer/drummer is NOT "D'Virgo", but Nick D'Virgilio.

I've been a fan of theirs for about 10 years now.

What I wasn't aware of, however, was why Zonder left FW and what kind of music does Slavior play.

  • Mark left FW right after finished the FWX recording sessions. He is now playing with his band SLAVIOR. Great band, you can find more info digging here in youtube. See ya!

  • i saw them yesterday and he is better with his hair short

  • OMG, this is brilliant! I just got "A Pleasant Shade Of Grey", but never listened to them a lot... What a mistake...

  • I wish Ray hadn't cut his hair!

  • Can somebody do some songs off Perfect Symmetry. That's a really cool album and it shows off Ray Adler's voice, especially Static Acts.

  • i am SO feeling the bassist expressions as he plays, Amazing

  • come tha frick on, guys. why must Dream Theater always come into the picture where KevMo is concerned? as far as i can tell, he's been trying all this time to become completely disassociated from the band for this very reason.

  • i wasnt trying to project an image of dream theater because kevin moore was playing. i said portnoy was a great drummer and he played with fates warning. besides, kevin is always going to remembered as an amazing creative force of dream theater anyway.

  • speakin of kev, it odd watchin him on the keys not leanin back the way he used to

  • Portnoy Fuckin rules.......he might not be the best at drum solo's.... but the creativity hes displays when constructing drum parts for dream theater songs is nothing less than profound, he is always the contiment professional.

  • I think you mean CONSUMMATE professional. :)

  • how does portnoy suck. you probably couldnt play any of the shit he can compromise in terms of the musical aspects.

  • wheres the point in saying that? stupidity tbh

  • Whenever i'm on a bus i have to listen to this song lol

  • fates warning is awesome. my favorite concert of them is when they had mike portnoy on drums!!!!

  • Probably you haven't see them live with Mark Zonder.. His drum play is from another dimention. Portnoy is a good drummer but Zonder is out of comparison. Check the DVD with the live performance of APSOAG

  • yeah dude, i am a big fan of mark zonder, yet portnoy is a better musician and acknoledges more creativity in my opinion.

  • I'm glad, Kevin works together with Fates', OSI etc. Dream Theater got worse and worse and worse.. Awesome song, anyway!

  • back to dream theater kevin

  • clowny clowns suck my dick's flints to get divine energy and abandon your histrionics. let me make mothers out of you. could I? hahaha...

  • yep is MICK D"VIRGILIO in drumms

  • is Mark Zonder in drums??

  • Nope not Mark but Nick D'Virgilio from Spock's Beard.

  • love Fates!!! Anyone have full concert of a pleasant shade of grey???

  • esta de puta madre.. ´Perú
