Some people around still are like XIX century english romantic travellers, always looking for moorish things and bandoleros everywhere at Spain. Please, don't be as pathetical as they were, a big part of the morish cult music was brought from Spain to the Magreb by the expulsed spanish moorish people. Some of us miss them, as well our jewish people, it was a huge mistake expulsing a part of our soul.
I would not deny that the Islamic world has produced great knowledge, and in its time was very enlightened. However I think you are mistaken to attribute the Renaissance to the Moors, since it originated in Italy and was based on the idea of reviving Classical learning and culture. The widespread tendency in Early Modern Europe was to view the Ottomans and other Moslems as interesting but also barbarous.
@xglewiss : First of all, what the Moorish created in Spain could be called everything but barbarous, and it's about time that the Westerners open their eyes and see beyond themselves; when all of Europe was in sheer darkness, Moorish Spain flourished in all aspects, especially in arts. It's up to you now to decide which part of Europe lived in a Renaissance period.
Agreed, the Moors were in Spain for a long time and left much culture there. However this piece was composed by Santiago de Murcia, who lived in the early 1700s, a good 200 years or so since the expulsion of the Moors in 1492. He also worked for the Spanish court under king Philip V. Flamenco music, which has some clear Moorish influence was not recorded as existing before the 1780s, and then only taught in the 1800s. I doubt that the purist kings would have approved of it before.
I think you should learn more about the Islamic Golden Age and see how your "Italian" Renaissance came to be born. If it weren't for the Muslim world and its scientific revolution during Europe's Dark Ages, the Renaissance wouldn't have taken place. Muslims revived the Classical works of the Greeks and Romans and they're the ones who purified it and discovered much much more. Educate yourself.
By the way, this music is amazing. I love it. Much love from a Puerto Rican/Guatemalan Muslim in NYC. :D

I did not say that the Muslims were barbarous, I was merely stating the historical fact that Europeans back then perceived them as such.
