  • Filipinos are Austronesian.

  • also with tia carera (sp?), as soon as pacquiao became popular she started claiming to be just filipino.

  • Filipino culture in general is one type of Hispanic culture. It is a part of the Hispanic/latino cultural realm. Although, Filipinos are not considered Hispanics according to the modern popular definition of Hispanic.

  • Back home, you're either ilocano, bicolano, ilongo, manileno, cebuano -- just straight to the point. But here in the U.S..pangbihira lol...naging half spanish na ayyy! lol --

  • Thanks for clearing up the Hawaiian part man. I hate when people say they're Hawaiian just because they live/lived/born/raised in Hawai'i. I noticied people only say that when they're not around real Hawaiians because they'd get their ass kicked if we heard that shit. But heyy 1/8 Filipino Homesteader here cheeheee (:

  • To the people on about asian and pacific islander.

Saying we are just filipino does not help, it means you are implying that there is a filipino race, which is incorrect, we are a country of many nations, not one nation. Technically we are asian, but there is no such thing as an asian race either, it's more complicated than that, we are a mix of taiwanese aboringes, southern chinese, malaysian, and indian.

  • You make a good point man. Im 1/8 filipino from Hawaii. But im a mut too lol. I thinnk im either illocano or visayan cuz that's the two different types that immigrated to hawaii. But im pretty sure i don't have spanish blood and since i can't comfirm it i don't see myself as spanish. You can't just assume your nationalities. And what that woman/man who said she's Hawaiian is a dumbass. People just cuz you live or come from Hawaii that doesn't make you Hawaiian!! Oh ya nd Hawaiian Pride!!

  • Hispanic is not a race. Filipino culture is a mix of hispanic and filipino-asian. The religious beliefs of most filipinos is a hispanic/latino catholicsm. Thats why filipinos can relate to mexicans and latin americans.

  • Your absolutely right bro. The truth is, we shouldn't be ashamed of who we are. If we do that then we just validate the way the rest of the world sees us.

  • well said!.. but jsut one thing, i guess some filipinos don't claim to be filo because when asked the question they aren't thinking about the "technicality"of ethnicity.. rather where they grew up and how they feel on their lifestyle... i can say im Filipino, my parents grew up as Filipinos and in the household its Filipino,. i was born and raised here in australia so my lifestyle is somewhat australian, but the filo heritage is still there, :D

  • Bisaya ka man dong?....

  • aha yess i am filipina :)

  • Great video. You make great points. But if some Filipinos aren't ready to call themselves Asian, it may be because of the racism we get FROM OTHER ASIANS, which is ridiculous. There's videos on here by Thai and other cultures saying we're not Asian. I'm not Asian? Tell that to the whites I grew up with, haha? I'm a proud Filipino, proud Asian American. Had a pot of rice with every dinner growing up, haha.

  • the truth is only stupid american filipinos from california made up this entire identity crisis. if any of you travel back home to pinas and ask people what we are, they will respond with asian. if you mention pacific islander or say you are not asian, you will eventually get knifed by a true filipino...jj. All flips are asian. btw, a very small % of flips have spanish blood. there is nothing to be proud of being spanish anyways. spain is one of the most racist countries in europe.

  • @gerryboy101 I'm a fil-am from California who also hates it when Filipinos say they are Pac Islanders and not asian. A LOT if not ALL my fil-am friends think the same way. Don't stereotype & generalize us. And calling yourself a "true" filipino is a slap to our faces. Just because we were born in America doesn't mean we are true Filipinos. It's this type of animosity that divides us. From a 100% True Ilocano Filipino American from California.

  • i agree

  • Don't forget Vanessa Minnillo. She somehow forgot her mom was Filipino when she said, "My whole life Ive been scrutinized because Im ethnic. My mother is Polynesian and my dad is Irish-Italian. So Ive had to prove myself from the inside out.

  • Don't forget Vanessa Minnillo. She somehow forget her mom was Filipino when she said, "My whole life Ive been scrutinized because Im ethnic. My mother is Polynesian and my dad is Irish-Italian. So Ive had to prove myself from the inside out.

  • Man, you put things into perspective. Big ups to you. I my self am a filipino. When a person asks me if I'm chinese, or vietnamese. I say nope, I'm filipino. Other people ask me, are you Hawaiian, and I respond, nope I'm filipino, but from Hawaii.

  • Totally have a point there. I'm a fil-am and am sad to say I was embarrassed to be filipino. Now, I see that in today's generation I see fiilipinos born just the opposite even claiming they were born in the philipines when really the have a us birth certificate. Where then does that kind of pride come from?

  • I agree with you but Lou Diamond Philips was one of those pinoys in his early days. He got in trouble for pretending to be part Native American to get a role in young guns. He did changed.

  • This is my friends account, but I wanted to comment anyways. I saw this problem a lot, & it mostly happens to young Filipino-American's. 1 Filipina I know, she tells everybody that she's Hawaiian. I went through something similar to, but now I'm honest. I'm mostly Filipino, but confirmed by my grandparents, I'm also Chinese, Spanish, & Arab. My dad's father could even speak Spanish, & on his death bed, he revealed our Chinese last name. This was in 1989, & for proof, my family taped it.

  • Now like a lot of Hispanics, I struggled with my Spanish side. I learned from an aunt, that my Spanish side came from a Catholic priest that broke his celibacy. As for being part Arabic, I didn't know about it, until recently. Most of the historic details are lost, but my grandma told me something about 6 Arab bro's that spread the name Medina to the Philippines, & Mexico. So anyways, whether you're pure blooded, or mixed, it doesn't matter. As long as you're honest about who you are, it's fine.

  • Many things contribute to this mind set, especially in Filipino American teens. Racism, & growing up in a mixed raced society, which is dominated by Europeans is 1 thing. Also, a teen's insecurity, & wanting to fit in, is another. In high school, most of the Filipino kids didn't accept me. That's when I went through a similar phase. To them I was an outcast. I looked different, had friends of all races, & listened to grunge. Luckily, I eventually found friends that accepted me for who I am.

  • we are latino / pacific islander

  • nice oliver. i like what you have to say. i like your perspective...

  • Mabuhay ka!! Good job... U know I'm look tisoy but I'm proud of my home country my motherland even I'm living here in the states my family my nephews are half white but they're proud more of being pinoy.. I understand ur point.. Kasi there's a lot Na mukhang pinoy pero ayaw magtagalog;( I'm not imppress at all. Ciao!

  • yes i'm filipino and asian

    oriental pride

  • Yup, our history just did not start with the Spanish colonization in Philippines and we have many tribes in pinas that many pinoys have forgotten about

  • @montano432 Even kingdoms, our history is deep, but I have dug somewhat deep, and found many.

Did you know Pampanga, before we were called kapampangans, used to have a kingdom called lusung?(guess where the name luzon came from).

  • @montano432 We had tribes, but we also had various kingdoms and other states that established, even during 900AD.

  • regarding whether filipinos are pacific islanders... Ask this question to filipino that are living on pacific islands. and they will say that they are asian. Filipinos in hawaii NEVER say that they are pacific islanders. same in guam. and would NEVER say it in front of another pacific islander. i have witnessed that myself. I watch my filipino friend tell a white person that he is pacific islander. but when i introduce him to my samoan friend he said he is FILIPINO/ASIAN.

  • historically and culturally speaking, filipinos have a very strong hispanic heritage. HISPANIC is NOT an ethnicity. It is a culture. Each former Spanish colony had their own unique HISPANIC (influenced) culture. Mexican HISPANIC culture is different from Colombian HISPANIC culture. Filipino HISPANIC culture different from Chamorro (Guam) HISPANIC culture. And so on. Only the USA has turned HISPANIC into an ethnicity. And cause all this identity crisis. Even within the HISPANIC realm.

  • very true. hispanic is NOT a RACE. filipinos are culturally HISPANIC. the HISPANICs of ASIA. like the Chamorro people of Guam and Marianas are the HISPANIC of the PACIFIC. but today the modern definition of HISPANIC means that you have to come from a SPANISH speaking country. but that definition is mostly a USA definition. and unfortunately has spread around the world to become the common definition. but still, the filipinos are a HISPANIC culture of ASIA.

  • @L00KER68 Our languages, Tagalog plus al the native languages of the philippines are Austronesian / Malayo Polyneisans languages including those in the Pacific Islander it's a 17 nations of more than 300 M speakes, clutural, Heritage and by blood belongs to our Ancestor, 5000 yrs ago migration from Luzon Island and the rest of Maritime nations in Southeast move t the Pacific that's our History more than 5000 yrs ago.

  • It also shows that Filipinos are losing their traditional cultural and moral values with the acceptance of the Holywood lifestyle in their "stars". Filipinos need more than movie stars and singers to be role models...I am sick of this entertainment focused Filipino youth, especially the FilAms..uugh its annoying. Filipinos need community leaders for role models and other people. At least Pacman is a boxer and has a real talent and not a pretty face.

  • Hey man those are some good thoughts. I am not Filipino, but you emailed me this link. I have met so many Filipinos and the American born ones have a HUGE identity crises and a sever problem accepting who they are to the point of extrmely annoying me. Another issue is Filipinos try too hard to latch on to ANYONE even remotely famouse who claims pinoy. Its really annoying. Like you said Tia Cerrer making money off the PI when they are going down. Its really sad.

  • Hey are you Filipino?

  • Yes i am...c'mon man im as filipino looking as you can get ...jk

  • Dude face it, you're Asian. Get over it. Lapu Lapu was Asian...Filipinos are Asians just as Indians are Asians and Indonesians are Asians and Russians are Asians. Its the Region you are in dude!!

  • hey I agree with this video actually, my question is who is a full-blooded filipino? all of us are mixed! one way or another

  • its the truth

  • u speak the truth...but i do see it improving with the younger generation. i think tfc, pacquiao, more visible filipinos in the mainstream media and young pinoy activists are slowly helping change that attitude

  • good point

  • im glad people are putting their inputs... i recommend people to put their opinions,so we can see all sides even from non-filipinos

  • i am pacific islander. i have indonesian friends, malaysian friends, and thai friends. and all of us have experienced filipinos asking us if we are filipino. its only filipinos that ever ask. my malaysian friend never asked me if i was malaysian. my indonesian friend never asks filipinos if they are indonesian. are filipino so insecure that they need to ask others if they are filipino too? we only get this from filipinos. and they always say.."oh.. because you look filipino." it's rude.

  • u have a point also..theres many reason...one is filipinos somestimes are more comfortable talking about certain subjects with fellow filipinos..and sometimes its also rude to assume another person is filipino so sometimes we ask...but i will try to talk about that too...its good that commented on that so we see different sides of the issue

  • thanks for reply to me. another thing... when we are asked if we are filipino, its usually by a total stranger. i would not mind if it was someone in association, but ..for example.. at the airport, at the mall, etc.. ...they would come up to me and ask me if i am filipino. sometimes it frustrate me and i want to reply, "no way!!". but.. i'm not rude person to do such reply. i hope you understand my side.

  • i have seen my filipino friends tell others that they are hawaiian. one time he told an actual hawaiian that he was hawaiian. and the true hawaiian guy asked him for more details. but my filipino friend then told him.. "actually i am filipino, but i lived in hawaii for 5 years when i was younger. " then the hawaiian guy asked him, "why do you tell me you're hawaiian?" and my filipino friend was so embarrassed. and said, "because i dont want to say i am filipino."

  • lol

  • That's so true. Yes, Apl is a proud Filipino, and even Batista who even tatooed Phil Flag on his arms. Thse kinds of Filipino makes me proud of being one.

  • syes you are right...sometimes its important for people to have someone that they can identify with

  • Because being a pumped up steroid freak is something all Filipinos should seek to identify with...

I think Filipinos try to hard to look for Filipinos in the media to be proud about...besides he is only part.

  • part of the problem too was the lack of leadership within the community, lack of role models in the mainstream media, and lack of some parents to teach the kids about their heritage for many reason such as making them "americanized"

  • yes there is some truth to that...because we were under spain by hundred of years...we were basically brainwashed to feel inferior...and like many countries that was ruled by spain like mexico....if you watch filipino tv many of the people you will see have foreign features....and i made a video but its in tagalog, on how filipinos tend to look at having a dark skin tone in a negative way and its become such a problem that one of the biggest industries in the philippines are whitening products

  • back then many pinoy parents did not want to teach their kids their native language for the belief that it might hinder them in the future...but the attitude is changing now...i see a lot of young kids now being active in learning bout their heritage..i think many things have contributed to that including ....observing other cultures, tfc, pacquiao and young activists who inspires other youths to learn more about their heritage and the issues within the commnity

  • it's even tougher for Filipino Americans (like myself) who's grandparents migrated from the P.I. over eighty years ago, to learn the language/culture. I was fortunate to pick up bits and pieces, but still haven't had opportunity to go visit Cebu yet. But plan to in the future & see grandparents home towns.

  • comment by buffinipnoy

Never claimed anything but pinoy bro.

Was born in Manila. I really never had a problem calling myself Filipino.

very open to proud. Was FSA (Filipino Student Assoc.) president in College at Baylor University (Waco, Texas)

Love the vids. Keep it up.

  • cool...no doubt many pinoys have chinese blood...but u know the peeps im talkin bout...what bothers me too is those pinoys that only claim their filipino only at their convenience

  • I am 100% Filipino! I can also say I have chinese in my bloodline due in part my dad's mom was 1/2 chinese but I was born in the Philippines, quezon city.. I lived almost all my life in California but I am 100% Filipino!
