@nayr3636 erwin021777 is right. when you have a foul to give, that means that you can foul the other team and they don't shoot free throws, they just simply have to take it out again. so basically if lebron actually had a good basketball iq he should have fouled with around 2.5 seconds left, which would have made the grizzlies take it out with very little time and dramatically decreases the chances of losing on a game-winning shot by one of the grizzlies players (like rudy gay).
