When I went there in the '70's we had a LOT of people switch from the art program to something else...immediately. Not because it was bad, but because it was good. It was and is a good program and a serious program, requiring much more hard work than a lot of people are willing to endure. Many people sign up for "art" thinking it is a crib course, but at VCU you learn it is a multi-faceted profession that needs real dedication and skills and talents greater than most have to offer.
