Hi Betty (= Ive been watching your videos for about a week now... I really enjoy your stories and your great detail you put into your recipes... Growing up i did not have anyone to share their recipes with me.. I thank you for these videos and plan on starting traditions with my family.. Thanks Again.. (=
One thing I love about you, Betty, is that you keep your family traditions and Southern traditions alive. You seem to appreciate memories, people and just life in general. Instead of always following trends, I love and appreciate that you are here to show me timeless techniques and recipes I can pass down to my children one day.
I am getting ready for the Christmas holidays and am getting ideas... I will try this fruit salad for our Canadian Thanksgiving on Oct.10. Listening to you speak of your mama makes me miss my mom so much. The holidays are never quite the same are they? But keeping with tradition helps. This video put a lump in my throat.
@sandpikd2213 To make it creamy, I would suggest making the sauce (with less water), then cool the sauce and fold in whipped cream. But, substituting milk or cream in place of the water will give you a nice creamy sauce. Also, an option is to heat brown sugar and sour cream for a lovely fruit dip or sauce.
Betty you are such a sweet lady, thanks for taking the time to do all these videos for us,i look forward to your recipes, and have learned a lot,you should have your own tv show, thanks again ,for everything you do
@rensnita You may leave it out, but I always add it to a dressing that has sugar (maybe like coleslaw dressing); it changes the character of the sugar a bit.
@bettyskitchen Thank you so much for the response. I love your videos. My sisters and I take turns cooking for our parents and my day is on Saturdays. My mother, who cooked every meal for us as we grew up, did not know the meaning of eating out. So I like recipes that are similar to the way she has cooked over the years I spend time on my days off going through recipes and I love yours. We live in Ky also so I relate to your recipes and find them wonderful.
I let the sauce cool. Then I prepare my fruits, and pour the sauce over the fruit. Then I refrigerate the fruit salad for a few hours before serving, so that the fruit picks up the flavor of the sauce.
hi, do I also have to add lemon juice to the pears and banana? will doing this make the whole salad very sour? also, can i just use juice from fresh lemon?
thanks for sharing the recipe Betty! my husband loves fruit salad and I just know he ll love this one..looks so easy to make and sooooo tasty! HAPPY 2010!
Thanks for your lovely comment! You mother's fruit salad sounds wonderful--foods like that bring back pleasant memories. I hope you have a Happy New Year!
Betty -- how absolutely dear! The fruits and nuts that you received under the tree at Christmas turned into the fruit salad. Shoes to wear for school....this all brought tears to my eyes. I'm sure that salad is more than just a treat you eat at holiday time. It's a memory you cannot capture on a video cam. Thanks for sharing!
i am going to try this for sure! i just want you to know that i think youre a terrific person and thank you for sharing your recipes and making it easy for us to follow. i have tried several with alot of success! thank you Betty! MERRY CHRISTMAS!
I listened to the video a second time, and I see you answered my question. Only put the lemon juice on the apples, bananas and pears if you are not assembling the salad right away after cutting the fruit. Then drain the excess lemon juice off before assembling the salad. Thanks!
I love fruit salad at holidays..this one really looks yummy, Betty! Thanks to your mom for this recipe. Love the place setting you made to serve it..looks very festive. Merry Christmas!-----Angie
Something fruity is lovely to have at Christmas time Betty as it is very light. Thanks for sharing- Bartlett pears are so nice:-Richard (have a wonderful Christmas)
Beautiful and looks like a fruit salad that would actually taste very good. Thanks for sharing your dear mothers recipe. Happy Happy Holidays Ms. Betty!!!
Now I know my mother would LOVE this dish. Maybe I will make it when I go home for Christmas. Thanks, Betty and hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday!!

May I ask the purpose of the white vinegar? I have an aversion to vinegar but if the sauce needs that property in it, I will try.

if you dont have corn starch and white vinegar can you still make it?
SamanthaXIsabel 1 year ago
@SamanthaXIsabel It won't be quite the same, but you could sprinkle the fruit with brown sugar and a little water.

hi, last qn, do I add the sauce and mix when I want to serve it or add it beforehand?
missmickery 1 year ago
I let the sauce cool. Then I prepare my fruits, and pour the sauce over the fruit. Then I refrigerate the fruit salad for a few hours before serving, so that the fruit picks up the flavor of the sauce.

hi, one more qn, urm can I put them out on the table throughout, say, a party, or do I have to keep them in the refrigerator all the time?
missmickery 1 year ago
The *best* thing would be to keep them refrigerated until served, but it would be okay to put them out earlier.

Yes, you can use the juice from fresh lemon. You do need to add lemon juice to the pears and banana; otherwise, they will turn dark.

hi, are there any substitutes for the cornstarch?
missmickery 1 year ago
You can use flour; it won't be as clear, but it will taste the same. Thanks for asking!

We always made a fruit salad too. Basically the same fruits but Mama poured evaporated milk and added sugar and vanilla. We loved it.
Now I will have two recipes to make up. I'll do this one on New Year's Day.
We were poor so we got fruit, nuts and candy in our stocking plus a book and maybe a small toy. It was fine with us.
Happy New Year, Dear Heart. You are a blessing to those who watch your videos.
