I believe that this scene is one of the best in the movie. Prior to this scene Tom Cruises' character has been killing himself, drowning his pain and guilt in alcohol. By going to see the parents of the boy he accidentally killed and confessing to them the truth of how their son died is the beginning of his healing and turning away from his self destructive ways. It's a catharsis, and something that he really needs to do to help himself. He needed to be forgiven so that he could forgive himself

Especially since the Tillmans seemed very intelligent and down-to-earth people, not the kind that would go about prosecuting and harassing a simple soldier.
