David coverdale makes alot of valid points that hold true to this day....But what this interview made me think of the most, was how much i missed stone & acid washed jeans & wonder if jean makers will ever produce them again for retail....: )
Complete tosser who sold out 25years ago.Hey coverdale did Iron maiden become a bitch to the industry in the late 80's?NO THEY DID NOT because they said fuck off to the extra cash but you said yes please that'll pay for the luxury cabim in Reno you girls blouse!
Listen to me people...if you truly love great, balls-out, high-spirited hard rock, you really owe it to yourself to run out and buy the new Whitesnake CD "Forever More." I just bought it today (April 29 '11) and I promise you will not be disappointed...it fucking rocks! The whole CD is solid from start to finish, a superb mix of go-for-the throat aggressive ass-kicking and beautiful, rich, uplifting ballads and melodies. Whitesnake is back and they are keeping the flame of hard rock alive!
Seems to me David called out the excess of the 80s as it was happening. The next wave of music after hair metal was grunge which pretty much avoided the pitfalls he described. It seems we are now due for another reality check in music. The music business is a mess now, as reflected by the played out hip hop/party rap nonsense. Music can be more thought provoking and meaningful to many again, instead the current schlock.
@boredsmile yeah, i guess you could go with grunge instead of the 80's if you dont enjoy music sounding good, artists looking good, or lyrics having any thoughtful meaning whatsoever.
@Cr1mSiR There are many ways to respond to your reply. I've decided to just use Smashing Pumpkins as a Grunge example to disprove your statement. The Pumpkins music sounded great. The Pumpkins always had a good looking bass player. "Today", "Disarm". or "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" easily crushes the cliched lyrical content of 90% of the 80s hair metal. Hair metal fans never seem to realize they lost because Grunge was about the human expierence inside your head, not what others thought.
Even though Slip Of The tongue was way to poppy compared to Whitesnake classics like lovehunter, trouble & slide it in. He is still very honest and gives a great interview here about the industry.
@zendakk LOL, their only parallel is their accent. I'm sure David Icke has his reasons for doing what he does but he doesn't come anywhere near David Coverdale. Coverdale is the best. Long live Whitesnake.
Great Advice for any performer, in any venue, with any size or kind of "audience" Do it from the heart, otherwise not only will the audience vomit and reject your performance....you the will too too, and that is worse than being dead....So Be real...be true and do it from the center most part of your BEING!! Connected always to "Mother Earth/Father Sky" The real platform ....The real stage.....Peace Out!
this is at the very end of the commercial era of whitesnake, when he'd finally had enough. everything after this is MUCH more toned down. most people assume that grunge killed whitesnake just like it did everything else, but this incarnation of the band was already over by 1991 because coverdale was tired and burned out, as is very clearly indicated here. interesting interview, he's so much more cynical than in the 87/88/89 era interviews. it think the whole thing finally got to him.
ok i TOTALLY agree with coverdale here, but I don't get as he's bashing music vid's they are showing the MOST corporate of all of whitesnake's videos. I don't get it. There is no consistency lol
that is not correct.. Coverdale is very "instrumental" in the creating of the music (not just lyrics).. haha.. no pun intended! And btw.. FOOL FOR YOUR LOVING.. written by coverdale, moody, marsden!
It's such an irony. Coverdale's a smart enough bloke, with the wisdom that comes with experience. And yet... an yet, his lyrics are the worst in the history of the universe. And he knows it.
The man is pure class.. He is as camp as a row of tents. I saw Whitesnake live a few years ago and he took the time out to talk to the audience. I was well impressed

fuck me - had no preconceptions of him other than what he is like visually and the music - SPEAKS ALOT OF FUCKING SENSE - good on him - was half expecting an inarticulate coke head with a voice like a food mixer on max setting churning round half a pound of glass gravel and cement .......
David, I have total respect for you honest assessment of the crap that has become the music business. Music should never have become intertwined with the idiots that handle the business...they have KILLED what music could become.
"The LA Gear stuff.. you know...I mean, you look at the youth has just been just been brutalized.."
David is referring to the "LA Gear" athletic footwear advertising campaigns. LA Gear was a very popular brand worn by a lot of people; highly mass-marketed at that time. People wore LA Gear just to be cool; not because it was high-end quality footwear, but it was "the cool thing to do".
David Coverdale is not just your average "rock 'n roller". He's an intelligent businessman, as well.
I thought that's what he said, just did'nt know what it meant- thank you!! Yeah I know, smart guy. I've watched this interview many times. Feels like he tells the truth. Maybe It's because I don't watch TV :)
I never realized he was a smoker. Maybe that's part of why he's got such a deep sexy voice?
I love his candid honesty about the music business, and the battle for genuine artistry; quite an eye opener, coming from one of the biggest rock talents -- ever.
Robert Plant is the poor mans Robert Plant, Hasn't been able to sing for 30 years. He could never hit the notes live that he would sing in the studio. and now a grammy for Bluegrass music? Wow, there's something to be proud of for the once great Led Zeppelin front man.
Who cares if his range isn't that of Gillan? Coverdale's voise is just better. I can't stand Gillan's vioce, never could. Just my opinion.
Lyrically crap? Have you heard all of their stuff? The love songs are the only ones on earth that make sense! Crying in the rain should be studied in uni

Intelligence & sex. He gets my vote without a doubt!!
Are you kidding? Ian Gillan, a better vocalist than Coverdale?! Don't think so. Coverdale is the best singer in the world!! And I'm sorry but Gillan can't sing compare to Coverdale....
highwaystar1009: But you can't say that Gillan is a better vocalist because he isn't. Maybe you think he suited their style better but that doesn't make him a better vocalist than Coverdale!
Yes of course! But Gillan can't sing like Coverdale. That's just a fact... Just because I don't like a singer, he/she still could be the best singer in the world. Coverdale has a bigger vocal range than Gillan. It's not just my opinion, like I said, that's just a fact....
I can smell some jealousy out here...here is a Brit from Saltburn by the sea who took his career by the cruff of the neck...had the audacity and gall to audition for Deep Purple lead vocalist and did brilliantly...led WS successfully thru the 80s decade, WS wa primarily a defunct band in the 90s, never thought that people saw them as a joke!!
I cant believe his economic knowledge. This is unbeliveable for a person in this career field. He is aware of his government economy in the music/entertainment industry.
No wonder David Coverdale made it! Not only does he have "IT", he also has the smarts to deal with the business area of making music. He is down to earth, and not afraid to stand up to "The Man". Being a singer myself I know how difficult Sailing Ships is to do, especially live..I am still in awe when i remember it is a guy singing up an emotional storm. Wo!! David Coverdale the Gary Moore of vocalists. Undeniably the best.
He does have the voice, both singing and speking. He could be a cool college professor if he wanted to be, and, no, not just because he's got the classy Brit accent. Every interview he seems pretty grounded. At least now, anyway.
It sounds to me like he has lost his local accent.I come from a place about 15 mile away from where he came from.He come from a very working class back ground.he sounds posh now.he has got a very nice speaking voice i have to say.
I know what you mean. He acts like a street scrag and talks like a male Sloan Ranger or doyen of landed gentry. If anything contributed to Whitesnake becoming a joke in the 1990s it was this kind of pretentious facade. Americans fall for the con for a while, but British people see through it from the start.
I like to hear people's accent,it's apart your make up,to me any way.I agree with you there.Brian ferry is the same,he took lessons to get a bbc style broadcasting voice.Brian is also from the northeast.may be it something to do with the north east!ha ha.

You're joking! No Steve Perry or Jon Bon Jovi? They both piss on Daltrey!

Greatest voices in rock :
1) David Coverdale of Whitesnake
2) Ronnie James Dio of Rainbow/Sabbath
3) Robert Plant of Led Zep
4) Klaus Meine of Scorpions
5) Roger Daltrey of The Who
This is my top 5 list!!

naaaa where's PAUL RODGERS, ROD STEWART and me?
