This is BS. The so called "melungeons" were free negroes from Louisa County, Virginia that married into white and native american families. They moved to the hills of Appalachia were they would not be discriminated against and rather then call themselves mulatto they call themselves the mysterious and exotic "melungeon". end of story. no mystery.
@grl8r Actually...The melungeons was started by Vardy Collins and Shep Gibson....they was NOT listed as blacks...they was listed as Indians....and if you check ANY historical documents on newman's ridge and the melungeons....you would have known this....OTHER families was called blacks...but NOT the founding 2 families of the melungeons. GRl8r...I would defiently welcome a battle of historical knowledge with on on this subject anytime.
My ggggggrandfather was a Nichols from Carmel OH, his name was State Nichols, any info on him would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks for shooting this video and Johnny Cash and Nine Inch Nails rock!!!!
@mshellek75 The Nichols is part of the Collins family, contact the ohio nation of saponi or Saponi descendants ASsociation for mor einfo on your nichols family.
Very familiar with the settings for this video. The road being filmed from the truck is the road that takes you over to Fort Hill. The cemetery shown at the end of the video -- the one in which a young lady is standing behind a tombstone -- is the cemetery in Carmel, Ohio. There are, however, only a few melungeons left living in Carmel. Most have moved on to Greenfield, Hillsboro, Washington Court House, Chillicothe, etc.
Excuse the ignorant question, but in this day and time, what's the big deal about being on camera and talking about all this? Most folks would find it fascinating to listen to. I'd never heard the word Melungeon till a few years ago.
Because we are still here in great number from Louisiana to parts of New York from Virginia to Kentucky from Ohio to Tennessee from Georgia to North Carolina even South Carolina to Florida. we are still here, Red bones, Melungeons, Black Dutch, Black Irish, were all still living here in the u.s.a we look a little lighter now but nonetheless we are here and still going strong. i love this video if you have any connection to Melungeon peoples be proud!
Ppl with Middle Eastern and Eurasian ancestry come from a region and/or come from a ppl who come from a region of the world that is typically very hot and have dark skin for the very same reason that the stereotypical dark skinned African does. But one is not directly descended from the other.
This is a lie, most people in Appalachia are of mixed Native American descent and know it. The Appalachian "hillbillies" are good and descent people generally, and I don't appreciate your slandering my racially mixed "White" ancestors as fearful, clanish bigots.
Actually, to correct you, most people of the Virginia portions of the Appalachians are of German and Swiss descent, the people living in the west Virginia portion of the Appalachian are rumored to have a very deep descent of Irish.
All of the Melungeons have been colored white my surname is welsh but i look Spanish or Italian I have all the Melungeon features the Anatolian bump the shovel teeth and the dark olive complexion but i am not Italian or Spanish I am Melungeon just like many Virginians my ancestors came from lee co virginia they mixed with Melungeon peoples with the last name moore. last i checked moore was english/irish but not my moore ancestors they were far from irish LOL like night from day different!
Didn't the melungeons, and those of melungeon descent, have a specific physical characteristic? I believe some ppl have referred to it as a 'node'. It's basically a growth on the back of a persons head that sticks out a fraction of an inch and is perhaps a centimeter in diameter and when it is covered with hair it really can't be seen or detected unless you put your hand on the persons head and feel around for it.
Actually, most Melungeons look almost identical as Portuguese, Turkish, or African Americans. Why?(In case you don't know, not insulting you) They believe that the majority of the Melungeons are of Turkish and Portuguese descent. As far as there being some African American in them- cross breeding
(white-black). If you look at a Turk or Portuguese person, they almost look with with a slight sun tan lol
I am aware of the white, black, and arab (European, African, and Middle Eastern/Eurasian) heritage of the Melungeons. If you were trying to answer a question that I had asked then you failed. (Not trying to insult you, just stating a fact.)
Also, black ppl & those with African ancestry aren't the only ppl in the world with dark skin.
Actually, some Melungeons have African ancestry. That is a fact, do all of them? NO, that is what is difficult. The skin issues I brung up is being referred to how Melungeons have Portuguese heritage as well as having the skin to match it. An Portuguese person looks almost as white as an German person. That is why suspected Melungeons who have had DNA tests ran on their genealogy have come back to a large % of them having Portuguese and Turkish Ancestry
yes its an Anatolian bump if you are melungeon and you run your finger slowly from the back of the neck up about mid way you will be stopped by a little knot type thing the whole back of my head where it is located protrudes out lol its very interesting i didn't even know that i had melungeon ancestors untill i read about this stuff in school recently. i look like a white person except i have olive skin and native american features.
Vardy Collins's father was My great great great great great uncle. There was a indian community here is Georgia that alot of the Melungeon, Saponi, and Catawba families all came to around 1830...Paulding county Ga.
These "exotic" or mediterranean characteristics were noticeable higher if most individuals and significantly higher in others, when compared to most "Anglo-Americans." Basically there are unique genetic distinctions between some people in Appalachia and others. The participants were supposedly of known melungeon heritage. Also, I would like to point out the Y chromosome Haplogroup E3a and it's prevelence in the core dna studies provides clues that the melungeons
The truth is the autosomal dna points toward both a tri-racial and non-Anglo eurasian heritage. Almost everyone in a recent autosomal study exhibited native american genetic material. Most had some fairly significant sub-saharan african ancestry, as well as having at least a moderate level of middle eastern genetics. All but two participants in the study shared dna with sephardic jewish populations. Berber and Basque/Iberian Dna or at least genes from that region were also present.
Can you plz name the cemeteries you visited whiel shooting this vid....very powerful....and do tell about the pics on the trees...any surnames to toss? For me...seeing the 6 fingered hand pic struck a chord. My family were these ppl....called Carmel Indians by some...Magoffin Brown ppl by others...we always heard Cherokee. Irreguardless...we have loved watching and sharing this vid. Cousins? Blessings from OH~~~L
I can answer part of the question about the cemetary. The one showing the decorated headstone is the Carmel Cemetary in Carmel, Ohio, Highland County. At the church near the cross roads.
great! but why so mysterious? melungeons are USA's autochtonous mestizo, metis, mestee or whatever you wanna call it, as part of the larger Metis, the Melungeon population is on the upswing all over the Western Hemisphere!
You are mistaken there Imora013! Melungeons are descended from the Spanish/Portuguese soldier-settlers who populated the Tennessee Valley and Southern Appalachia. In these settlements were not ethnic groups of the various Spanish Clans but also Sephardic Jews, Moors, Berbers, Arabs and Basques.
The settlements were connected to Santa Elena in present day S.C. and Santa Augustine in Florida. The Portuguese explorer Juan Pardo was instrumental in the establishment of these outpost that were manned with 150 to 200 settlers each, some with Christian priest and monks. These settlers lived in peaceful coexistence for the most part with the Cherokees.
The settlers also dug for gold in the Smokies and Blue Ridge. Their mines have been found. Some even brought their families from Iberia to the New World, and others married with the Cherokees.
Melungeons are NOT Metis! This is the typical Anglo response or that they are Tri-Racials...a mixture of Anglo, Indian and African...again typical Anglo scholastic academia. These settlers from Iberian Spain brought with them the genetics of peoples from the Transcaucasia to Iberia. They brought not only openly practicing Christians but secret practicing Jews and Muslims...the Conversios and Moriscos.
A special message from a Turk! I will forever protect and keep my eye out for your People, God bless the Melungeons...XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
