Edcerc and MilesTrane21 are correct! This is, in fact "ascension"...a ultra rare quartet version, pre-studio version...I have the vinyl of this and they mark it as Blue Valse (waltz), but that's not even a tune in theColtrane songbook (but is in theSony Rollins book) This is unmistakably Ascension, and how blessed we are to seeit as well as hear it!!!
I think that this festival was one of the few times that he performed A Love Supreme in front of a live audience. I think that he also performed again the next day and played Naima.
I had seen this video a while ago and recently I bought "Ascension" (which I loved) and it sounded so familiar. Now I remember where I had heard it. Amazing!
Ufff...este no la había visto!

Saw him play this in August, 1965, Soldiers Field Chicago. He was not like other musicians, he was partly in this world, partly in another.

this is sounding very "Love Supreme". Was this before or after ?

After. This is the same "call" he used on the album "Ascension", his famous "free big band" album. It's chaotic, but also very beautiful.

The Three Kings - Mohammed Ali, Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane...

You left the sax player from my band off your list. Keep Ali and Hendrix but it's time to show some respect for MODERN jazz players.

number1saxophone....What Jazz has advanced past John Coltranes explorations since his passing? Don't get me wrong it's a genuine question..
