I don't think it's irrelevant, but it's difficult to answer - Tom Riddle was always going to leave, he was essentially being held captive. Personally I don't think Tom Jr would have had a particularly pleasant childhood even if his mother had survived and his father remained under her powers. He would probably have become Voldemort in the end anyway.
My question: what would have happened if Fawkes never came in the Chamber of Secrets?

A question I've always wanted to ask is: Would Voldemort have still been Voldemort if Tom Riddle hadn't left, or would he just be Tom Marvolo Riddle?
