  • very cool!

  • looks like you're getting your money's worth out of your scope. just playin that's pretty cool :)

  • haha ein getuntews oszilloskop^^

  • Nice. But how to aim without paddles on screen? You just guessing knob position and button press timing? I just can't understand...

  • @ZXRulezzz The knob controls the angle that you hit at, the button controls when you hit. There's even a mark on the knob that you can use as a guide.

  • Nice one. Makes an interesting change for using the XY mode instead of using it for lissajou figures and showing phase relationships. Well done.

  • Haha this is amazing

  • *nostalgic tear*

    Now, this is a hack!

  • coool if u could reset the game.

  • william heddenbaucker creater of pong

  • Never thought to do that with an Oscilloscope. Not exactly what it is usually used for, but on the other hand, very cool.

  • They're for measuring changes in voltage and testing if something you're making will work.

  • In this case they're using it to play a game, but yes, oscilloscopes are usually used for viewing and measuring waveforms.

  • hahaha thats crazy

  • Better than any of the modern consoles.

  • Has a really high FPS, as well.

  • this was the very first video game ever, even before pong.

    it's awesome

  • OLD version of PONG hehe

  • @johner1473

It's not the game, it's the machine. It's amazing what you can do with a big amount of knowledge and a reeeeaaaally big chalkboard ;)

  • @johner1473

these are for electronics student/engineers , who even design your PS3 you buy

  • Excellent

  • <3 the GFX

  • Valla crack!!!

  • wow these graphics are better than wii lol

  • its a osciloscope - device for measurement of voltage

  • you cheated, you used an IC. not l33t untless you do it with resistors, capacitors, and relays.

  • I was on the site where you build it and I was wondering what resistances those jumpers are. It's easy to test and find out but without more lines of colors it's of undermined resistance, unless I were to have physical access to them.

  • It has ONE BLACK STRIPE. That's the resistor color code for "zero" -- get it?

(Besides-- if it's a "Jumper" it's zero ohms anyway.)

  • @oskay

how do you represent something that isn't a function (one x to only one y) on a osciloscope? that's cracking my brain...

  • >how do you represent something that isn't a function (one x to only one y) on a osciloscope?

The scope is in XY mode; most scopes can do this. It plots the instantaneous X voltage versus the instantaneous Y voltage. We supply two inputs: X(time), Y(time).

  • @oskay

So it's like in a individual point mode so you can turn on a determined point by is (X,Y) coordinates?

  • thats so kool lol, as old as it looks the idea of the game, or atleast the controls, that would be really cool to own... Wish i had one XD!

  • that game i2 51 yrs old?!?!?! and it still workd!?!?!?!? wow

  • Holy-Terrorist:>*=* ☻♥♣○◘♀♪☺☼‼↕¶▬☻↓↔▲▼ !♥#' *=*

  • all those machines to play a simple game?

  • Thats what happened in the Atari days

  • Thats an oscilloscope buddy.

  • no. its jus a remake of what it looked like when it came out A LONG...... time ago

  • this was a real game

invented by some scientists working at a nuclear power plant to make the "visitors day" more appealing to people, and well it worked

  • Lol, if you didn't notice... There's no scoreboard. Haha, who's winning?...

  • this was back when they used paper and pencil to keep score in video games still. :p

  • fukin hilarious ha ha ha

  • ohhhh!!! morse code

at 0:52 what message it says... please anybody translate those code... for me!!!

  • freakin awsome idea

  • You don't need to buy an oscilloscope, just go and visit your old school and your teachers at the Electronics Labs! ;p

This is a very funny trick, congrats! =)

  • LOL nice, lets all buy osciloscopes to make a raquet game...yyyaaaay

  • there is no racket. the red button hits the ball and the knob controls the angle you hit it at.

  • music from garageband.

  • greatest game in the world.

i would trade my xbox for it

    serious also.

one question, how do you know where the racket is?

  • a new way to messy with the thing tht tells ur heart beat (i sound like a noob)

  • lol its quite simple

  • soo ummm....? you just hit a button thats it? alrighty sounds like a ton of funn... I'm gonna go back to playing Gears of War or Need For Speed you know up to date games... lmao jk this is kewl if you can make it yourself...

  • both Gears of War or Need For Speed

is kinda out of date games xD

    now its more like hmm..?

    wanted, halo wars?

  • gta iv?

  • yea but its not that new...

  • halo wars is like red alert XD imo it sxs i rather play red alert or warcraft 3 lolz im getting left 4 dead tho for the ps3 cause u can play with 4 people against a massive zombie horde wich i always love to do so bye bye half life

  • Farcry 75 is where it's at, |/|0035

  • HOW DID YOU GET AN ossiloscope!!!??!?

and such a waste on one... well mabie not...

  • wtf, your on an ossiloscope??

  • 1958?!?!?! what are they playing on, Eniac?!?!!?

But still, that is pretty cool.....

  • So this is this is the pinnacle of entertainment...ಠ_ಠ

  • lol so true.

  • Knob= Angle Button=Hit ball

  • How does it work..?

  • guy on the right kicks the guy on the lefts ass

  • Physics look pretty good, just like when the ball bounces on the floor.

  • is that one of those heart beat moniters from the hospitals? it reminds me of what iv seen of one

  • It's called an Oscilloscope, they are slightly different to the ones hospitals use. You will proberbly use Oscilloscopes at school.

  • ahhh...cool but you cant see the paddles??

  • when u click the contoler, the ball bounces back. the knob is for power

  • so then the only way your opponent looses is if he does not hit the button fast enough? other than that the ball can land anywhere as long as you hit the button befor it hits the wall?

  • i want one :)

  • The morse code in the middle says

    CQ DE TM0RBC 04J

  • whats the song name?

  • I win...so far...

  • reminds a little of pong(atari) the first video game

  • The first *commercial video game. Tennis for two is actually the first game ever made.

  • tss what's the point of the oscilloscope when using IC's to run the game... it used to be analog.

  • would have been better if it was played on an original oscilloscope

  • The thing is that this is suggested to be the first ever Video Game... :D

    Best thing of all...

The Physics are GREAT! better then even the Agea things

  • i AM laughing out loud :D LOL

  • whats the point when you cant see the... thing that makes the ball go "bing...bong"

  • WTF o.O

  • That is just AMAZING! Best use of Oscillioscope yet :D

Maybe I'll buy a micro controller like that and test the program, haha :-)

  • OMG, TEH GRAPHICS.

Better than the graphics we have now... :O

  • thats not the point. the point is its using an oscilloscope wich measures wavelengths. this is very difficult to do

  • Actually, no. The oscilloscope is using two inputs to drive both the X and Y axes. Notice one shot of the "X-Y" button on the scope? The microcontroller is basically using it as a very fast plotter.

  • lol ^-^ jaja

  • Dumb ass, look up William Higinbotham, he's the one that invented it in 1958 on a CRT Oscilloscope, which does not have pixels.

  • hahahaha!! I laugh at you! XD

  • say hello to the granddaddy of ALL video games! yes.. that's right. this is the very first game. before pong! before any of the mass produced home game systems this was invented during downtime on a navy ship. poor guy must of been extremely board

  • should have an old man in the background slowly dieing while your playing that.

THAT WOULD BE VERY VERY FUNNY!

  • That´s FANTASTIC.

    Congratuletions!

  • Was the ATMEL ATMEGA microcontroller available in 1958??????

  • >Was the ATMEL ATMEGA microcontroller available in...

No, that's why the intro to the article says "Using convenient modern electronics, we have designed a functional and playable replica of the original that can be put together by a hobbyist in a couple of evenings."

  • Though I wonder what was actually used in the original game...

  • Oh! It's amazing. The oscilloscope is always surprising me.

  • What! an oscilloscope can do that? this is actualy pretty funny.lol

  • SHUT UP THATS F*&KING AMAZING!!

    just kidding...

  • Yeh whats the point of learning physics and maths and electronics if you can just play on a nintendo and be a douche.

  • nintendo suck u guys are fags get an xbox

  • Ok i jjust ran out and bought one, am I not a fag now, please tell me I hold your opinion of me very highly.

  • cool

  • what was that?? "all I heard was that u wanted something about a small penis in your mouth, and that you thought it was pop culture"

  • all you heard? either you're blind, or you have downs syndrome. i'm betting on the second one, you retard.

  • im serous what was it said? you like small penis in your mouth????? its ok if your gay we wont make fun of you for it ;p

  • Hahahaha, I found the comment amusing.. Sound like something that happens in trailer parks with dirty rat bags running about with muddy umbrellas am I right?

  • yup yup

  • it use graph concept y-axis and x-axis..if u good at math,u can build that too..

  • omggg I really don't get how you can do this with an oscilloscope! I wish I watched this video last semester when I was doing the electricity physics class!

  • Whahahaha

  • Best use of a oscilloscope I' ve seen yet lol

  • i think they invented this like 40 years ago... its now called a gaming console

  • this was indeed the first videogame before pong

  • theres no reason to have this.

  • yeah sell this on ebay!

  • Hahah this is a good one :D

  • congratulations!!!!!you could make something that already worked 50 years ago.

  • omg this is pretty hard to make.

  • how do u get that oscillascope to project your tennis game?, oscilloscppes are used to meassure soundwaves

  • no, they are used to watch electrical signals...

  • WTF cool

  • thats so coooool

  • I never thought I'll see a game for osciloscop... lol... xD

If we had this in high scool, our free time with osciloscop wouldn't be so boring... :D

  • game on the osciloscop WOW ;] gooooood work

  • dude you should sell this on ebay

  • i dont get it ., whats cool about this stuff?

  • >i dont get it

    You don't have to.

    > whats cool about this stuff?

It's how to make your own recreation of one of the first video games.

  • how do you know if your going to hit it?

because i dont see anything but the ball

  • >how do you know if your going to hit it?

because i dont see anything but the ball

This isn't Pong-- that didn't come until 14 years later. You can hit the ball whenever it's on your side of the net by pressing the button. Having the paddle visible and stuck the ball the whole time wouldn't make any sense.

  • oh now its a whole lot cooler to me!!

    whats the knob for?

  • >whats the knob for?

The knob changes the angle at which the ball goes when you hit it (by pressing the button).

  • oh cool!! now I want one!!

  • I had no idea what I was learning during college physics when we used that thing.

    Now it all makes sence.

  • I'd bet a lot that the commies didn't have anything close to this. Thanks so much for recreating the game. I love the aesthetics too. It's gorgeous.

  • who needs the ps3 now!!! that we got this

  • >who needs the ps3 now!!! that we got this

Oddly enough, we had this on display at a game show last weekend, right next to a new PS3 game. People were playing both. :)

  • wow really lol im surprised, i guess its a fun game, making it hombrew for ps3 or consoles similar to that it would be pretty fun

  • Cool.

  • so 1958 2d video games had better physics then Alone in the Dark? pff, really sad.

  • Ya that is cool but where do you come up with most of this stuff?

  • >where do you come up with most of this stuff?

I saw this one on a blog called grow-a-brain. It's credited in the article that goes with the video (follow the link in the video description).

  • amazing!!

  • its cool, but that thing looks old...

  • >its cool, but that thing looks old...

Um, yeah. It's a recreation of a 1958 video game. It's supposed to look old.

  • can you use any oscilloscope or do you need a newer one like yours. I got 5 from the early 60's.

  • >can you use any oscilloscope

Basically, yes. Any old scope that has an "X-Y" mode is suitable.

  • o saw this on history channle i think it was at a power plant a guy made this for an open house as a game to show the ppl that the place was alright i know it was very simple machine

  • How much was it back in the day?
