Great video, thanks for the help (liked, subbed). Very good to be run through step by step visually instead of a wall of text from most tech-help sites. Only problem is, no windows xp installation disc and no means to make 6 floppy discs, can the file be downloaded to a disc instead?
What do you do if you can't even get the Windows CD to run? I restart the PC and the monochromatic screen asks me if I want to start in Safe Mode, etc. with a countdown. Any option I choose leads me to the blue screen. How do I start the CD from there?
Thanks Brian, this video literally saved my computer's life. Even though it was difficult to see the prompts, your verbal explanations carried out well!
Hey , my computer ( Emachiens 350) I know its old BUT! when i put in my xp disc the disc drive looks like its working but it wont read; I have tried everything to fix bsod no joke you name it new harddrive,Safe mode ( which i cant get into), changing bios boot order even attemping to load ubuntu 10.10 will not work . Sorry this is long .
NOTE: Unmountable _Boot_Volume
What do i do! Like I said i have literally tried every method but still it dosen't work!
I don't know if I can get myself the original cd I used to install my XP so is it possible to use a different CD? I assume based on this video that you don't need a key of any kind to access the installation for recovery console (the person in possession of the installation cd has lost the key to the cd, or that's what she said, at least)
The problem that I'm having is that I have to use the 6 floppy disks because the computer I'm working on, the cd-rom drive is damaged and when I get to the final disk the blue screen appears. It will not allow me to get to the "welcome to setup" screen in order to use the recovery console which is where I've been trying to get to so that i can fix the corrupted registry. Any advice?
@garymcmanus2 Try and get disk form your computer manufacture . They are called recovery disk or reinstall disk. Depends on the manufacture you have if you have a dell computer they will gladly send you disk. But if you have Emachine they are dicks trust me I have had to deal with them in the first 2 minutes on the phone the guy was yelling at me. and will not send you a disk. If you are trying to get your computer fixed it is sooo much easier with the disk then the floppy disk method.
My old computer is in a boot loop. It's been like that since 2009. I checked the blue error code by looking at another video tutorial, and it is an Unmountable_Boot_Volume code. I downloaded the file your provided. Can I burn the 6 files to a CD?
hey guys this is a very common blue screen death error 94% chance is like there are some registry errors in your system and only 6% chance is of hardware faulty ..one of my told me about to download Reginout tool i have downloaded that and run on my system in safe mode now everything is goin great..so you guys also try this tool because its an amazing tool there are many options u just have to run this tool and see the difference yourself..
This is occurring on my laptop as we speak. Since, I do not have a floppy disk drive, can I use a CD Rom Disk? Or if you have any ideas please send me a private message or reply back on here.
Ok, I do not have a XP disc... I ran a hard drive diagnostics test and it came back as code 7. I have a Dell Optiplex gx620. Is there anything that I can do to fix this w/o the disc. Also I have read that code 7 is a hard drive failure, I also read it is read failure. Can someone tell me what code 7 is? If someone could help me out it'd be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
You Are A GENIUS!!!! I Cant Begin To Explain How Helpful Your Info Was, Wow Is All I have To Say....I produce music as a hobby and had my computer crash about 4 months ago. I figured the hard drive became corrupt but also figured there would be no way i myself could retrieve the info off the HD. So i put both production and my comp aside until i gathered the money to have a professional retrieve the data off my HD...Some might say why pay all that money to have the data recovered?
i do not have a boot disc and no floppy's i just downloaded norton and restarted and got this error and would appreciate to know how to fix it if this doesnt help . please message back
Brian, i'm getting this blue screen while running the windows setup blue screen from usb flash drive and used wintoflash. The windows setup doen't finish, the problem has been detected screen comes up first. I can't get into the computer because the OS doesn't start. WHAT CAN I DO?
brian, i am getting this blue screen with setupwile trying to boot from flash drive using the wintoflash. I can't get into the computer to fix the ini files. What should i do?
Hi, i'm having some problems when i do the chkdsk bit. I have tried chkdsk /p and /r but both times i get a message saying ''the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems'' Could you please tell me what I can do to fix this? Thanks!
I want to thank you so much for your well explain version on how to fix BSOD.
It could not have happened at a worst time (TAX SEASON). My accounting software was on my laptop and tomorrow was payroll and next week is my year end for taxes.
Ugh after I load the 6th disc it immediately goes to the bsod again but it doesn't say unmountable boot volume. It just says "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" what the hell do I do???
i need help :o i got a mini pc witch means i dont have a cd drive and no floppy drive can i fix this with a usb stick???? please awnser!! i willdo anything
yeah I got this after trying to get Garry's mod 11 illegally(Lol yeah I know but i'm not allowed to buy it cuz my mom thinks it will fuck it up[point and case])and It is windows 7. fuck
My laptop gave me this message a few days ago. put the windows xp prof. cd in the drive, restarted it, but this same error comes up no matter what I do. Safe mode doesn't work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just don't have the funds right now to take it to a professional. I would consider replacing the hard drive, have had this laptop for 6 years, backed up my files recently. I just need to extend it's life a bit longer until I am in a financial position to replace it. Thank you!
If everything here doesn't work, does it mean I'm screwed? Earlier today my brother tripped on the cord of my mothers netbook, sending it to a harsh meeting with the floor, and ever since it's been BSODing on startup with this error. I've already tried these things before seeing this video, but I am using the USB recovery console you helped us make in another video.
@DarkWolfFell i feel ur pain once i tried downloading a fsx addon i put it in the wrong folder and the next day i got UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME and my local geek told me i wuz screwed
I've watched a lot of videos on this site, but this is the one I adore the most (also Britec09's Repair Internet Explorer IE 7, IE 8 with Fix IE Utility was quite helpful). Thank you so much for taking the time Britec09.
I just have one question, do all of the drivers nescessary for my computer come with this CD? I have them downloaded and installed i was just curious. Because if my driver was the problem could I just use this to reinstall the correct drivers for my computer? Thanks, cheers.
yeah just the recovery partition so i put my windows xp cd to look at the partitions d: was recovery and c: said window as unkown? any solution on why i cant see c: drive in repair screen
This can also happen when you use the wrong IDE cable to connect it. If your computer uses an Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA) hard disk controller, and you use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive, you may experience this error. Make sure you are using the correct IDE cable.
If all else fails, you can take it to a repair shop and they can fix it for for probably $100-300 depending on the shop. And if it fails there, you just have to get a new computer.

Hay Britec09 do i download & make the floppy's with another computer & put them into the broken one? Also, would that mess with the computer im making the floppy disks on?
Brian, I downloaded the Recovery Console image onto the CD, the Windows Setup screen loaded, and right when the screen to enter the CHKDSK code, I get another BSOD with a different kind of error. Did I miss a step? Is there anything else I can do to recover my data? Thank you!
Theres alot of ways to recover data, take the drive out and put in as slave in another machine or use one of these, UBCD4WIN, UBCD, VISTAPE, LINUX, Windows ON USB, CLONEZILLA etc etc
Thank you so much Brian. This really works, it only takes about 15 minutes in total to do. You saved us from having to get the Geek Squad involved and you saved us alot of money. I really appreciate you taking the time to give this advice to everyone. You rock....Thanks again...
hi i tried this but then i get stuck n get a screen saying "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your compueer ...setup cannot continue" what now?
GRAWR! do i HAVE to use a floppy disk? because im on a laptop and i cant stick a floppy disk into the laptop.. but i do have blank CD.. can i use that?
Thanks for the video. However, apparently I have an administrator password--but the person who set it up is no longer with the company!!
Am I doomed, or is there a way around the administrator password (I am the owner of the machine, but he put windows xp pro on because he said our network required it.
what about Vista ? i got this on Vista on a vaio VGN-NR11s TWO times now 1st time i changed the harddrive because i never knew it was a Unmountable Boot Volume Error (blue screen was really fast, i disabled restart on fail boot up,.. why MS did this i dont know! anyways)
thats my issue , i havnt got Vista recovery disc ,and xp disc says there is no Harddrive, .. umm this might be because of the SATA drivers,
damn it Britec09, i should have waited and looked at your comment, i thought you wouldnt comment back and i got a little nervous and formatted my laptop, now its completly working, but at what cost lol :(
Please help me, when i put in the cd into my laptop, and make the computer run with the cd, it does all that its supposed xcept it goes into the format screen and when i press R nthing happens. i dont want to format my laptop because it has so much data on it! what do i do???
I think the cd you have is a recovery cd, look at my videos, you want the video that is about recovery console, download recovery console from that description and burn it to cd and try again.
Thanks friend, but I have only a question, I have already followed your steps but my computer said me: "Does not exist the chk.exe file, please write the localization on this disk with the unit" or something that, What can I do?.
what chkdsk.exe does not exist? best thing to do is check the path where the files lives and see if the file is there by typing DIR see if file is listed.
path should be c:\windows\system32
if its missing maybe a virus or somthing, just copy a new one from windows cd ok
Is there any other way to get the XP install disk? Because I cannot find mine. This problem is really bad and I have no other way to access the internet. The instructions are great!
Windows Recovery Console off the Windows XP CD will not wipe your hard drive, unless you want it to?
Do not enter recovery console partition to recover windows, that is for recovering you computer back to factory settings. boot to windows xp cd and enter recovery console that way.
Is there way to do it to a CD rather than a floppy? my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive

I don't have the XP CD as the computer did not come with one but I made the six floppies and get as far as the Recovery Console.
It starts off with
1: H:\MiniNT
2: H:\i386
Which do I pick?
It does not ask for a password and when I type in chkdsk /r it comes up with the following message
AUTOCHK.EXE could not be loacted in either the startup directory or the CDROM drive.
Type the full path (inculding drive letter) for the location of AUTOCHK.EXE:
What do I do?
Thank you.

Brian, I downloaded the Recovery Console image onto the CD, the Windows Setup screen loaded, and right when the screen to enter the CHKDSK code, I get another BSOD with a different kind of error. Did I miss a step? Is there anything else I can do to recover my data? Thank you!
maguirre 2 years ago
Theres alot of ways to recover data, take the drive out and put in as slave in another machine or use one of these, UBCD4WIN, UBCD, VISTAPE, LINUX, Windows ON USB, CLONEZILLA etc etc

I have seen the /P switch but in the CHKDSK program help screen there is no /P switch.. what does the /P switch do ??
xadam2dudex 2 years ago
/p = option instructs chkdsk to perform an extensive check of the drive and correct any errors.

Hi,
Thanks for the video. However, apparently I have an administrator password--but the person who set it up is no longer with the company!!
Am I doomed, or is there a way around the administrator password (I am the owner of the machine, but he put windows xp pro on because he said our network required it.
Thanks for your help!

I remembered it, the correct name is "autochk.exe" and not "chkdks.exe", sorry but I did not have my computer at that time
theproyectjasb 2 years ago
Well try same thing see if file is missing and replace it if it is.
Britec09 2 years ago
Thanks friend, but I have only a question, I have already followed your steps but my computer said me: "Does not exist the chk.exe file, please write the localization on this disk with the unit" or something that, What can I do?.
theproyectjasb 2 years ago
what chkdsk.exe does not exist? best thing to do is check the path where the files lives and see if the file is there by typing DIR see if file is listed.
path should be c:\windows\system32
if its missing maybe a virus or somthing, just copy a new one from windows cd ok

Would recovery console wipe out my hard drive?
UberGoggleBogglez 2 years ago 4
Windows Recovery Console off the Windows XP CD will not wipe your hard drive, unless you want it to?
Do not enter recovery console partition to recover windows, that is for recovering you computer back to factory settings. boot to windows xp cd and enter recovery console that way.
Hope this helps you out
