Yep - I bought mine from a farm, 2 weeks old I put them in a bath tub and they swam perfect. It's called instincts. A pair of zebra finch born and bred on a farm still makes a nest if you provide them with the nesting material, and they've never seen a nest before in their life. Nature has a plan for everything.
you do know that ducklings who dose not have mothers can't swim that well and if you but a bowl of water in there box/pen they will drown. Beacause the mother duck has fat on her fethers and when the small ducklings go under her the fat rubs of to them.
That's not true. My ducks swam just fine without a mother duck. They have their own oil glands that coat their feathers to make them waterproof. But they do have to preen and groom themselves to get those glands to start working. My ducklings swam every day that I had them after they were a week old, and not a single drowning incident occurred.
They are Muscovy ducklings. Their mother was killed by a raccoon at my apartment complex and I rescued them and took care of them for a week and a half. I took them to a bird rehabilitation habitat a couple of weeks ago. I miss them. I wanted to keep one or two of them, but knew it would be best if they were out in a safe, natural environment with their brothers and sisters.
Muskovy? I'd heard of them but never seen them. For some reason they look more mallard like but then again all ducklings pretty much look the same. The one I have is a mallard and I got her at a feed store for my son to raise for 4-H. Sorry to hear what a coon did to their mama.
