  • Just thought I'd tell you how good your voice is for this song !

  • Guys look! It's John Schnieder!

  • this is how all lessons should be.

not hard to keep track of what your doing. even if your new to the guitar. Learn from listening and watching, my fellow mindless zombies.

  • Its 'Hey hey My my'...not My my hey hey! LOL

A true fan of Neil would know that....LOL...just saying.

  • @lizardprince7 it IS "My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)." the electric version that bookends Rust Never Sleeps is "Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black). But like you said, "A true fan of Neil would know that...LOL." Just sayin', y'know. Really good lesson, Eric.

  • Great stuff! Thanks. Great voice, too.

  • nice!...something tells me your a Neil Young fan ....cant quite put my finger on it, but I know its true!..:)

  • yep you sound alot like neil

  • thanks man

  • Eric,

    Great Job, Thanks for posting.

  • I haven't even watched the lesson part yet, but hearing you play it so awesomely, I know the lesson will be great. Thanks

  • Hey Eric I've just found this. It's excellent & clear thanks. I'd done it similar busking alone at home & your vid has helped me remember what I"d done & do it better. My 12 string is tuned down a full tone anyway to enhance the ring & to make bends easier. Thanks!

  • Lines, they are called runs.

  • exellent ,thanks from niteshift56

  • @bluegrasssingingman The buzzing you hear is from the tuning being a full step low, and the guitar is set up with strings and action for regular tuning. If buzzing bothers you, I suggest you might want to avoid much of Neil's catalogue, and especially avoid the song "Bandit", which features a distinctive buzz as part of the "lick". take care - Eric

  • @bluegrasssingingman

Dude...why are you hassling this guy?

And you are misinformed re: guitar buzzing......a guitar tuned down a whole step indeed WILL buzz if it is set up properly for standard tuning. Of course if it is set up properly to not buzz dropped down a whole step, then when tuned to standard the action will be high and/or string tension stiff.

    Unless you know otherwise?

  • Awesome stuff; Neil's voice, too. :) This is one (of many) on my to-do list this winter. Thanks, man!

  • you sound amazing

    '

  • man the lessten is rearly good but the best bit was when you sang at the begining. it could have been neil himself singing. grate job

  • That sounds amazing. I'm in awe.

  • Really very good.. you seem to be a big Neil fan.. Which makes me wonder why you named it "My My Hey Hey" instead of "Hey Hey My My".. Regardless .. I loved the video!

  • THE WAY YOU MAKE YOUR GUITAR SING IS FANTASTIC!!!!

wONDERED WHAT KIND OF GUITAR YOU HAVE?

    UNTIL THEN

  • @510697enfd That is a Collings CW

  • Comment removed

  • @bluegrasssingingman Thanks for stopping by. BTW, the Collings Clarence White model came out over a decade before the Martin CW models, which came out in 2002. Both these models were homages to Clarence's '35 D28 that someone had enlarged the soundhole on. Both guitars had the White family's blessings. Both guitars are awesome, and offer a Mahogany version, which is where you might have gotten your the D18 confusion from. Have a great day! - Eric

  • @bluegrasssingingman PS Never heard "poor" and "Collings" in the same sentecne before. There's a first time for everything, I guess!

  • @EricDMyers

haha...good come back to bluegrassing man..."thanks for stopping by"

I am teaching this song to a few students....so this helps with the details.

    thanks

  • great lesson. any chance you can do cortez the killer.?

  • your totally fuckin cool. no kidding

  • that guitar has an excellent bottom end . comparable to Neils d-45

  • are you neil youg ? fine, thanks for the lesson.

  • awesome

  • its scary how much u sound like him dont be intimidated by the great neil young you can write an amazing song too and uve already got the voice for it. "it's better to burn out than to fade away"

  • awesome man thanks.

got the song thanks to this.

  • love it.. Thanks so much. You really helped, and your voice sounds great when you sing!

  • oh by the way Eric. I want to see you perform this song. I really enjoy great covers.

  • I can tell you feel Neil when you play. I love it. your lesson for this is a class act too.

  • hi... I am smaller fan from you... maybe you can play yours help to play songs also completely (without help to play), like zb.old man, hey hey my my and tell my why.... I and maybe many others would be glad... thank you mic

  • @micfly334 Hi. I play as much of the song as a demonstration to show the essential parts of the song that I then show how to play. I don't play the full song for 3 reasons. 1) It would take too long and my youtube account has only a ten minute per video limit. 2) I post these videos to show how to play the songs. I don't really wish to be a Neil Young cover artist 3) The originals are so much better. Who would want to hear me when they got the real thing?

  • lol i didnt know neil had a brother. you are that good. great job.

  • Mate you are bloody awesome! Close my eyes and its like listening to Neil! Rock on.

  • wow !!!!!! nice tutorial, Looks like I have my work cut out for me, always loved this song, no I get a chance to learn it! Thanks for the awesome tutorial!

    PEACE!

  • thanks! I'm trying to learn this song and I don't know the licks- but I'll give it a go!

I think you sound like Neil Young....

  • thank you! :)

  • I know how to play it already but I don't know how to tune the guitar that way. PLEASE HELP!!!

  • @thejakeludwig The notes are, from low to high, D - G - C - F - A - D. Its tuned like a regular guitar tuning, just 1 step (2 frets) lower. Match your low string to the pitch when I play the low D and tune from there. Hope this helps.

  • @EricDMyers It don't work

  • @thejakeludwig just put a capo on the second fret and tune to standard

  • @thejakeludwig i don't know whether u got how to tune it or not,, this is a late reply. But an easy way to tune it is to put a capo on the 2nd fret and tune to standard tuning .. hope this helps :)

  • Excellent job, and a good voice to boot.

  • You are so clear.........thnx man......Rust never sleeps

  • nice dude !

  • what is dit für ne guitarre?

  • 5 Stars

  • Just let it FLOW

  • very well explained. no bullshit. makes it seem simple. thanks.

  • you should come to branson MO and do a tribute to him :) your good. and there isn't a neil tribute here... i was thinking about one once LOL

  • You should start a Neil Young cover band.

  • just a suggestion but can you please put a tab up of this song

    it would be very helpfull

  • Basically one of the best instructional videos out there to any extent. holy fuck man. Thank you. Still learning it the way you're instructing how to play. I keep coming back here to look at the video to look at it.

How long did it take you to learn how to over-analyze it how you are? Not that it's a bad thing, but it separates the fans from the accentuates!

    Thanks a lot.

    Great talent.

  • @justinc18 I probably did over-analyze this because someone asked me to show it to them so I figured I better learn it right. I tried to get it as close to the Rust Never Sleeps acoustic version as I could. Usually I just figure songs out from memory, and then when I finally sit down and work on them from the source I discover I make a lot of errors.

  • @EricDMyers Errors or not, it's still pretty darn good. And I've learned a lot from it.

    Cheers.

  • You've got a great voice like Mr. Young! And thanks for this!

  • Can anyone helt with the strumming pattern for the chorus for this song? Thanks

  • ummm, up down, up down. thats it.

  • Way to be a dick. You must be cool, even if your wrong.

  • Keep on rockin' in the free world!!!

  • Very good. But I don't understand to : Tune down your guitar. Why?

  • it gives the guitar a more bass like tone than if you simply played the chord directly down the chord.

  • @Czechmagnum because Niel plays this song with his guitar in drop d.

  • @Czechmagnum If it's how Neil play it, it's probably because he likes the tone, and allows him to sing in tune, and give him better vocal range when both playing and singing in key.

  • Really great listening to you play and sing this ~ i love the ringing sound of your Guitar ~ Well done, and thank you for the free lesson ~ All the best ~ Geoff

  • Excellent, you sound just like him...Can you do the whole song without talking?

  • yes he is bad ass but look at any top list on youtube and he isn't there i know one persons list will be different from another but i haven't see him on one and he dosen't make in it the great songs of all time (rolling stone) until so where in the 300's. But I still think hes great either way.

  • rs is a joke please don't take anything they write too seriously

  • oh my.. you are amazing!

  • this is great and helping me to play. great job!

  • I've got that t-shirt too!

  • I would love to hear you do this song all the way through. you can sing the shit out of this tune. thanks for the lesson. Great Job!!!!

  • Awesome job man. This was one of the few songs that i couldnt play by neil. You made it really easy to learn this favorite!

  • i hate how Neil is never though of as one of the greatest rockers of all time. i think he holds a candle to Zepplin for that positon

  • i though tthe same you sound very much like neil

  • i re watched your video and ive all ways wanted to play guitar with some one like you

    id learn alot

  • great lesson dude!

  • This man is Neil Young!!

  • Really nice video!!

  • HOW DU I LEARN TO TUNE

  • Great lesson wish I had your voice!

  • This video got me to re-learn the importance of in the pocket strumming.....(after 20 yrs of avoiding) thanks!!! People take for granted good strumming.... but most people who play the guitar are not real good strummers. Thanks for the wake up!

  • congratulations, veeeeery well.

and your voice makes it very good

  • Thanks very much. Class!!

  • oh my god! ur voice is incredible.. it sounds almost exactly like Neil's.. that was incredible.. keep on rockin in the free world man
