@lizardprince7 it IS "My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)." the electric version that bookends Rust Never Sleeps is "Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black). But like you said, "A true fan of Neil would know that...LOL." Just sayin', y'know. Really good lesson, Eric.
Hey Eric I've just found this. It's excellent & clear thanks. I'd done it similar busking alone at home & your vid has helped me remember what I"d done & do it better. My 12 string is tuned down a full tone anyway to enhance the ring & to make bends easier. Thanks!
@bluegrasssingingman The buzzing you hear is from the tuning being a full step low, and the guitar is set up with strings and action for regular tuning. If buzzing bothers you, I suggest you might want to avoid much of Neil's catalogue, and especially avoid the song "Bandit", which features a distinctive buzz as part of the "lick". take care - Eric
And you are misinformed re: guitar buzzing......a guitar tuned down a whole step indeed WILL buzz if it is set up properly for standard tuning. Of course if it is set up properly to not buzz dropped down a whole step, then when tuned to standard the action will be high and/or string tension stiff.
Really very good.. you seem to be a big Neil fan.. Which makes me wonder why you named it "My My Hey Hey" instead of "Hey Hey My My".. Regardless .. I loved the video!
@bluegrasssingingman Thanks for stopping by. BTW, the Collings Clarence White model came out over a decade before the Martin CW models, which came out in 2002. Both these models were homages to Clarence's '35 D28 that someone had enlarged the soundhole on. Both guitars had the White family's blessings. Both guitars are awesome, and offer a Mahogany version, which is where you might have gotten your the D18 confusion from. Have a great day! - Eric
its scary how much u sound like him dont be intimidated by the great neil young you can write an amazing song too and uve already got the voice for it. "it's better to burn out than to fade away"
hi... I am smaller fan from you... maybe you can play yours help to play songs also completely (without help to play), like zb.old man, hey hey my my and tell my why.... I and maybe many others would be glad... thank you mic
@micfly334 Hi. I play as much of the song as a demonstration to show the essential parts of the song that I then show how to play. I don't play the full song for 3 reasons. 1) It would take too long and my youtube account has only a ten minute per video limit. 2) I post these videos to show how to play the songs. I don't really wish to be a Neil Young cover artist 3) The originals are so much better. Who would want to hear me when they got the real thing?
wow !!!!!! nice tutorial, Looks like I have my work cut out for me, always loved this song, no I get a chance to learn it! Thanks for the awesome tutorial!
@thejakeludwig The notes are, from low to high, D - G - C - F - A - D. Its tuned like a regular guitar tuning, just 1 step (2 frets) lower. Match your low string to the pitch when I play the low D and tune from there. Hope this helps.
@thejakeludwig i don't know whether u got how to tune it or not,, this is a late reply. But an easy way to tune it is to put a capo on the 2nd fret and tune to standard tuning .. hope this helps :)
i have watched your video about 100 times ,each time learning a piece more. thank you very much for posting. this is very helpfull, and a very meaningfull song for me.keep on rocking in the free world!!!! best of luck to you ericdmyers--- peace
Basically one of the best instructional videos out there to any extent. holy fuck man. Thank you. Still learning it the way you're instructing how to play. I keep coming back here to look at the video to look at it.
How long did it take you to learn how to over-analyze it how you are? Not that it's a bad thing, but it separates the fans from the accentuates!
@justinc18 I probably did over-analyze this because someone asked me to show it to them so I figured I better learn it right. I tried to get it as close to the Rust Never Sleeps acoustic version as I could. Usually I just figure songs out from memory, and then when I finally sit down and work on them from the source I discover I make a lot of errors.
@Czechmagnum If it's how Neil play it, it's probably because he likes the tone, and allows him to sing in tune, and give him better vocal range when both playing and singing in key.
Really great listening to you play and sing this ~ i love the ringing sound of your Guitar ~ Well done, and thank you for the free lesson ~ All the best ~ Geoff
yes he is bad ass but look at any top list on youtube and he isn't there i know one persons list will be different from another but i haven't see him on one and he dosen't make in it the great songs of all time (rolling stone) until so where in the 300's. But I still think hes great either way.
This video got me to re-learn the importance of in the pocket strumming.....(after 20 yrs of avoiding) thanks!!! People take for granted good strumming.... but most people who play the guitar are not real good strummers. Thanks for the wake up!
I've listened to all of the covers of this song to get some tips on playing it. This is definately the best- and you can sing! Sorry to all the others -but you can either sing or you cant! How about a version of you just playing the whole thing? Rock on bro!

Very good. But I don't understand to : Tune down your guitar. Why?
Czechmagnum 2 years ago
it gives the guitar a more bass like tone than if you simply played the chord directly down the chord.
spnarticus 2 years ago
@Czechmagnum because Niel plays this song with his guitar in drop d.
chessplayer21 2 years ago
@Czechmagnum If it's how Neil play it, it's probably because he likes the tone, and allows him to sing in tune, and give him better vocal range when both playing and singing in key.
