@coolsdon From how I interpreted the novel Pip is slightly innocent... He was fooled into thinking that Miss Havisham wanted him for Estella when he was very young and allowed himself to believe she was his benefactor although she never actually said so. Sorry but Booth appeared just as shortsighted as Pip needed to be and Pip isn't a typical 19th century farrier! He's far more ambitious and yet gullible...
I'm not saying that Vanessa Kirby is not pretty but Estella needed to be stunning. Even in the 19th century Kirby would not have been considered especially beautiful. Rosamund Pike would have been perfect but I guess she was too old to be paired with Douglas Booth :(
@coolsdon Sorry but I completely disagree. Douglas Booth's "wooden" performance actually emphasized how innocent pip was at the beginning of the story. To be honest a blacksmith's apprentice in the 19th century is not going to be brimming with emotion in every scene. The only flaw in the adaptation is that Pip is more beautiful than Estella...
@enchantedbywinter ....I think it no more likely that anyone be fooled that Douglas Booth could pass as a farrier as Kim Kardshian being the next General Secretary of the United Nations.Working in a forge in the 19c would hardly breed a innocense based character.Wooden and innocense are def not the same thing!!
This whole production was let down by the ever so wooden Douglas Booth.Film makers seem hell bent on using these 'Burberry model type' pretty boys in all their costume dramas. He lends no character at all to the part and is obviously empolyed for his looks.
It will be months before they show this here on TV, so I'm ordering it from UK Ebay. I think Gillian Anderson is around the same age as Miss Havisham is meant to be, only today, women in their late 40's look much younger and live much longer than they did in those days, due to better diet and exercise. Douglas Booth is just amazing, so I'm getting him in 'Worried About the Boy' as Boy George, and 'Christopher & His Kind' about Christopher Isherwood who wrote the book 'Cabaret' was based on.
This was so good! My only criticism was the casting of Estella, she was not pretty enough and I don't think this because Douglas Booth is so handsome, she just wasn't beautiful enough to play her. But regardless, it was awesome :D
@ejonaR "Pretty enough" for what?? Such a silly comment,it's not meant to be Miss Universe it's a tv adaptation of a Dickens classic!! Besides female beauty in the mid nineteenth century was completely different to 2012 standards.
well i read the book for gcse, probably two years ago, and the main point that I remember about Estella is how beautiful she's meant to be, I mean that's the main description of her. The actress they chose was not what I expected that's all. Obviously it can't be exactly like the book (I always imagined Miss Havisham as looking as if she was rotting away, old and frail) but it was just my opinion.
Gillian Anderson is American but was raised ( 2 to 11 ) in Britain and she lives there now. Her accent is English but she learned to speak North American for the X Files. Now she is a linguistic chameleon. She did a great job but was to my mind way too young to be Miss Haversham. Douglas Booth was good but just a little too pretty and effeminate to play the part of a young blacksmith made good..
@hockeygurrl OK thanks for putting me right there though I did once hear her on TV say that speaking N.American was a learning experience for the X files. I live near Vancouver BC where the X files was shot and I have to say that she does sound more Canadian/ generic n.american. I do think she has great presense and loved her as lady Honoria Dedlock in Bleak House. Liked her in great Expectations too but have always had a very different image in my mind of Miss Havirsham
If I am not mistaken, the version of Carol of the Bells used in this trailer is the same as or very similar to the one on the soundtrack of "Home Alone"
He was so good in it <3 I didn't like estella tho, he could have married someone more in his league, haha, but he loved her because she was the only woman he met as a child.
Yes, ok, I admit I watched this because of Douglas Booth, but I was pleasantly surprised because I no longer watched it 'just for Douglas'. I was drawn to the story & the cliff-hangers that were so perfectly brought out by BBC. The cinematography, costume and whole feel to it was perfect. I loved it. Demanding for another episode isn't too harsh, is it?
@bensimps123 You clearly haven't read the book.Miss Haversham is always portrayed in white as she is in permenant mourning for being jilted as a young bride! That's her wedding dress!!
@bensimps123 There are so many different possible interpretations of Miss Havisham. Personally I prefer this one, her comparative youth makes her insanity seem more haunting.
I find all the comments about A-level English lit' students basing their essays off this television adaptation quiet funny. I can't wait to do the same next year....
@MrBoBoTom - whats shallow? saying that douglas is a really goodlooking guy?i'm sorry but he is...and most of the comments are just about his hotness,so I guess we are all shallow.
@AimeeMcGhee I believe Helena Bonham Carter still is playing Miss Havisham, but in the film version. This version is done by the BBC and is being played as a series of shorter episodes.
