The best connection I can make to 'one man washed.. on an empty beach" is the Count of Monte Cristo after he escapes from prison and swims to the nearest beach.
Does anyone know of anyone else (real or fictional) which those lyrics could be referring to? Thanks in advance if you provide a serious response. Much appreciated.
Thanks for the lead. John F. Kennedy's misadventures on the PT109 do fit the bill. I hadn't heard about it until I read your comment.
I hope to, when I find the time, make a video connecting photos of men to the each line of lyrics in the song. The verse dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. will show different photos for each line. Jesus Christ is obvious. Gandhi features and yeah, a couple of others..hehe (keeping it secret).
It's really Bono, not now, your voice actually ...su imagen actual rompe su posicion de antaño, no se, espero que esto sea solo algo para la TV ...watch more TV.
For those interested, This was filmed in a warehouse in Hanwell, West London. The tree was painted onto the warehouse wall and out of shot the band are surrounded by fridges It was my first place of work and between takes i was sending Bono up and down on a forklift used for lifting goods to the next floor! I was pig sick when the other video came out instead, but understood why when i saw this version!! If i knew then how big they would get i would have begged them for a job! Nice blokes!
one of the biggest secrets of U2 is that they were actually Evangelical Christians - which is probably what held them together more than anything - Bonos Father was protestant and went to a protestant Church - so I think that makes them more protestant than catholic - anyway they took religion very serious and its in nearly all the lyrics even though it was hidden publicly - so any crap about drugs is completely and utterly absurd
@spacehopperballs You're facts are a little backward. Bono's father was Catholic and his mother was Anglican - not exactly the most Evangelical Protestant denomination. In fact, Anglicanism isn't terribly different from Catholicism and isn't Evangelical.
As for drug use, I don't know what's been posted here but Adam Clayton was arrested for possession in 1989. He doesn't deny this but I don't infer any other use by any of the rest of the band. I think their drug of choice is clearly Guinness.
Have only seen the last minute of this version video in 1995 and been searching it ever since, never thought i'd see it again, thankou so much U2mixer, You are a star
Yeah, it's plain to see why this was shelved... Not even a song this good could make it work... Boring and dull... Closeups are often avoided by great directors...
What the hell was Corbijn thinking? Was he stoned? If this crap vid was released it could have f*cked up U2 for good. Even the great music of U2 can't save this vid...
Corbijn is extremely overrated and I guess that makes him a guy with a lot of luck. If it wasn't for the greatness of U2, he really could have fucked up the band by his material. It's a good thing they didn't release this.
is it just me, or was adam not the prettiest thing ever in his curly days? i mean i know larry's rugged "little brother" good looks, and bono's pretty delicate bone structure get all the attention... but that adam was a pretty muthafuker once upon a time, hey?
I think Anton Corbjin is very good directing videos he did Joy Division,Depeche Mode, etc.and always had been U2 photographer guess this video is alright id seen worse
when i was in Great Britain in Brierley/Marden on strawberry farm in 2006 i was every day hearing many times over this song in my phone. this one remember me that three months there. the best song of my life!...
Amazing emotional performance by Bono. It's certainly not the best U2 video, but I agree sarahmcmitch, there is something haunting about it. I especially love Bono freaking out and just going for it at the end there...letting it all loose. Reminds me of the great performances on The Unforgettable Fire documentary..."Bono maybe you could sit still for this one." Ah gotta love Bono's spunk!
sarahmcmitch: The beautiful song "Pride", is definitely the masterpiece. My earlier comment about "...eyes glow like an enraptured saint..." Was meant as a refference to Bono's future career as the champion "Saint" of debt relief. My comments caused a little misunderstanding...
U2mixer: NO such implications were intended. It was a joking response to a now deleted comment. One of the reasons I've loved U2 all these years is the fact they haven't hit the self-destruct button. I think the fans know U2 has got it together.
waterandafter:Corbjins video for the Killers "All these things that I have done", Is pure camp-part Spagetti Western, part Faster Pussycat Kill Kill. It proves to me that he learned his lesson about forcing people to pose with overly serious faces, but wow! What a hard way to learn! You're right about the "something haunting"; there are moments when Bono's eyes glow like an enraptured Saint. Very telling...
i agree with your comment that it was in a "joy-less" division style
another comment said this was never suppose to be put out, which leads me to believe that they were just fooling around in the studio to see what they could do
Corbijn directed this with all seriousness. They just weren't happy that the minimalist intimacy of the video conveyed the message of the song- or even any message at all! Sometimes good ideas on a storyboard just don't translate to video. I like what he was attempting but I feel it just comes across as an artschool student video - to me anyway.
waterandafter: I think poor Anton was self-conscious at this time of his reputation for portraying U2 as dour and "Po" faced, in frozen lasdscapes. This may have been an experiment in freeing their inner fire. Bono looks like he caught fire! In fact he looks like he's stomping on a hot griddle, but the spark doesn't seem to spread to Larry, Adam and the Edge...
i guess maybe i'm looking at it more through the eyes of an anton corbijn fan than a U2 fan, it's like corbijn got his friends together to try something "new" out and...
waterandafter: I would never make fun of people who couldn't defend themselves. I love Anton Corbjin's photgraphy-I treasure my copy of "U2& i". Anton has since redeemed himself with many excellent videos for U2 and the Killers, and his recent film about Ian Curtis (Joy Divsion) "Control". Both Anton, and U2 have a lot to be proud of, but this video can't possibily instill "Pride" in either of them.
waterandafter: If you "watch" the video with a blindfold on --its not at all bad! lol Perhaps they should have paired this video with "Bad". I feel guilty; I love U2, but I keep coming back to watch the train wreck... 3:03 provides a real moment of joy as Bono's robot hands slice through the air. Larry, Edge and Adam are in cataleptic shock that this is even happening to them... Poor fellows.
should've been the real video just for that insane shot at the end w/bono freakin' out while the other guys are like zombies. completely nuts, brilliant.
Don't just stand there! Someone get a spoon! Bono's having a seizure! I recommend that next time the blackmailers threaten to release a Anton Corbijn video --U2 should pay up without delay! Pay the blackmailers whatever price they demand to suppress any more Anton Corbijn videos from going public. I love U2, I cringed watching this.
I can see why this video got shelved, Anton Corbijn protrays U2 as "Joy-less Division". Larry, Adam and Edge look like they just saw their puppy run down by a car. This beautiful song deserved better. Still its nice to see young Bono without glasses.
According to Corbijn at a forum he gave in London in 2005, which I was lucky enough to attend, this video was never supposed to be put out. The band hated it on delivery, but it somehow ended up getting broadcast on a French TV network, with McGuinness understandably getting his knickers in a twist over it and threatening legal action. It was then pulled entirely.
U2 was never just another band, I was lucky enough to grow up during the 80's.. I remember being in 7-8th grade in 81-82 and U2 was starting to get airplay on KLOS 95.5 and KROQ106.7 in Los angeles Ca... They played the US festival in San Bernardino CA..Unforgetable Fire is released and Pride becomes a great hit..Then of course LIVE-AID just shot them to stardom...The first show I ever saw was U2 and the Pretenders at the LA colosiuem in Nov. of 87 by then they were huge.and they continuetoROCK!
why do lots of ppl say U2 went down after achtung baby? when achtung baby is like the best CD like "whos gonna run your wild horses" and "ultra violet light my way" ppl dont listen to those songs and other songs like faraway so close.... bunch more U2 is still good.
War, 1983, was U2's 'breakout' album for mass consciousness, with New Year's Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday. Unforgettable Fire, 1984/85, further cemented there hugeness, and put them into the 'stratosphere'. In 1985 Rolling Stone had them on the cover and labeled U2 'band of the '80's'. In 1987 everyone was wanting to hear what's next with U2, and, Joshua Tree delivered, pushing them into the 'Diety' range into where the streets have no name. However, my favorite U2 era is 1978 - 1982.
The best version was the one in the SFX (Saint Francis Xavier Hall in Dublin)with the little boy behind the seats who dances. U" played there to about 500 people each night on 22,23,24 December 1982 for a charge of Euro6.25 per night. This version is the worst of early 80's Bono self indulgence
Woooow! What the blimp is happening to Bono?Is he having a seizure?:D LOL I'm glad that they didn't released this version or people would have thought that Bono had gone completely mad.Still,it's good to see U2.They're the BEST,even when they do bad videos. :)
I'm not surprised it wasn't released, Bono would have been locked away if people had seen that. Thanks for posting though, always nice to see new U2, good or bad.
During that time period, I remember reading there was a version 3 video that was filmed specifically for their viewing only and it would never be released. Years later, I bought a bootleg VHS that had it (this video). It was cool only because of its rarity.
U2 was just another band. Each of my friends had their own favorite band (Stray Cats, Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, Adam Ant, Van Halen, Police, Oingo Boingo, Depechd Mode, INXS, Devo). Mine was U2. I remember thinking U2 deserved more recognition and to me their music was better. And though my friends liked U2 (more or less), by 1987 they started to think I made the better choice. It was very validating for me, but I almost dropped them as a band because of their success. I'm glad I didn't
The first time I saw them was in 1986 on the Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope Tour. The set was short, but awesome, though a little light on U2 material. Then I saw them 4 times in 1987. It was, also very good, but I feel that their later shows (1992, 2001, 2005) were better, at least for me.
I have to disagree that they were "just another band." The first time I heard them (it would have been early 1985), there was something about them that you picked up on from the very beginning. They were SO different than everything else out there. The fact that you almost NEVER heard them on the radio or MTV here in the states just added to their allure, I think.
you would have heard them around the time of live aid then? what was that like?? The U2 I got into was of a short haired Bono singing 'Beautiful day'. I crave their old and new stuff
To people like you or me they weren't just another band, but to the others they were. And most people hadn't heard of U2 prior to The Joshua Tree. I remember a few other bands in the same vein as U2 - Simple Minds, The Alarm, Big Country and Echo And The Bunnymen. It was a good time for music, as was the 90's.
My dear, its because when someone has to sing they have to hit a certain key on the music score and certain of the keys are very high-pitched, the more high-pitched the key is, then the more the person has to struggle by inserting more air in the diaphram. Thereby, making it seems to like as if a person is struggling, but they are in fact inserting to sing aloud.
really emotional,bono eats mcdonalds

LOL I thought he was having a seizure. It's funny to watch him compared to the other three just sort of standing there. :P

Thanks for posting though, always nice to see new U2, good or bad.

lol, I love U2 to death, but must agree with you, the video is really not much to look at, unless you're crazy about the lads, like all of us U2 fans

During that time period, I remember reading there was a version 3 video that was filmed specifically for their viewing only and it would never be released. Years later, I bought a bootleg VHS that had it (this video). It was cool only because of its rarity.

I know I should be grateful for my youth, but I kinda wish I had been around for the early days of U2. What was it like??!!!!!

Did you see them play in the 80's??
maddermofo 4 years ago

It was a good time for music, as was the 90's.

is it just me or is bono just sooo hot?!
but why does he look like he is havin a fit half way through?
u2no1fansy 4 years ago 4
My dear, its because when someone has to sing they have to hit a certain key on the music score and certain of the keys are very high-pitched, the more high-pitched the key is, then the more the person has to struggle by inserting more air in the diaphram. Thereby, making it seems to like as if a person is struggling, but they are in fact inserting to sing aloud.
