We all gather around and watch Holmes on Homes. Every one in the family love's to watch him. Even the neighbors come over. I have a question; what do I use If my basement has very fine cracks in the wall and a bit of mold on them?
Quiet rock you can get in most major cities in the usa. You may have to drive a ways to get it if you live outside of a major metro. You will pay up to about 50$ a sheet for it or more. It's not cheap stuff, but it does give you 5-7 times as much soundproofing as one sheet of drywall does. It has a very high STC rating. Keep in mind quiet rock is only as good as the system it's installed on. I recommend uncoupling the wall, as in staggered stud or double wall.
@pmcool99 lets send holmes a email to verify this guy , this dude is sketchy since everyone's trusting holmes and he "claim's" hes part of it , people gotta be skeptical with these people!!!!!
I love this show, it is awsome. He teaches everyone the right way to do projects. I will never stop watching it. God Bless you Mr. Holmes, for doing people right! Keep up the good work.
@gargamel55 Not sure if Holmes on Homes is still broadcast in Canada (where he's from), because they cancelled his show on Discovery (much to my disappointment) about 2 years when one of the 8000 'Discovery' channels became "Planet Green" (which is a 24hr joke). But what he did is basically go around and fix the houses of people that had been screwed, robbed, abandoned, etc etc by a contractor or construction company. worst of the worst cases. 99.99% of the time, for free (paid by advertisers
In desperate need of some feedback. What kinda of tools make it easier to cut through this type of drywall cuz that metal sheet makes it hard as hell to cut the lights out. And we're working with the 545 type which is the thickest there is!!!!!
This opened my eyes. My townhouse was built in 1912 and has double brick between the units. I (wrongly) assumed that current code was much better at fire and noise separation. That construction may have met minimum code but it sure looked shoddy.
I've been looking into this solution. I talked to lots of different people and my reading is the foam is an excellent thermal insulation but not so good as an audio insulator. The reason being is that the foam expands and touches both sides of the wall and thus carrys sound. Dense material with airgaps is a more effective audio insulator. Have any youtubers out there had the foam insulation on retro fitted to a weatherboard home? How was the sound insulation?
The most important issue here is WHY ARE DEVELOPERS ALLOWED TO GET AWAY WITH SUB STANDARD WORK. You don't just buy the place. You have to factor the cost of soundproofing. Building regulations in the UK change every year. It's ridiculous.
I had a situation like this - adjacent townhomes with long common wall. I demoed gympsum drywall and all pink fiberglass insulation (worthless). Hung QuietRock 545 THX and insulated both sides of double-stud wall w/ Roxul rock wool insulation - best sound insulation. Result - AMAZING. Only mistake was not also replacing 3-4 feet of drywall on flanking walls. Only sound I hear is coming *around* the QuietRock wall through the adjoining flanking walls. Will soon hang QuietRock 530 on those walls.
To clarify, party wall is a double stud wall, definitely a good starting point. I demoed my side only. So end result is neighbor's wall is 1 layer regular drywall, then rock wool insulation in their studs, then 3/4-inch gap, then rock wool insulation in my studs, then 545 THX for my wall. Funny -- if I put my ear to the floor, I can sometimes hear faint noises coming through the concrete foundation. And noise in flanking walls noted below. But no sound when i put my ear against common wall 545.
@mikeylee2001 you know that product is not eatable right? no point in buying that shit if you are gonna shove it down your noisy neighbours throat lol
People may say "why don't you move?" but, since we lived here first, why the hell should we move ? They came here after we arrived, yet because we don't drink or party, we are supposed to move? I am losing my mind, as is natural after almost 20 yrs of being hassled and woken night after night. I'm 41 years old, i probably look 60. I'm close to snapping and losing my temper. Anyone have any suggestions/ideas? (we are NOT moving out, that's not an option)
I have lived in my current home for over 20years. Around 15 years ago, a new family moved in upstairs. Unfortunately, they are kinda pig-headed and rude and they seem to enjoy antagonizing us, due to us being of a different religion from them. Well, i say different, but the neighbours have no religion. I've done my best to ignore their provocative acts, but can also hear them using toilet, as peeing on the porcelain part of the bowl(not the water)seems to be beyond them. Someone help me, please.
Since you're so religious (and better than them, of course) you could just molest their kids until they leave. I mean, hey, it works for the Catholic church, so it can work for you.
@m015094 , apart from the obvious immorality of what you're suggesting, my neighbours don't have kids. Well, they DO, but they are in their 30's and, so...yeah. Also, im not Catholic, so i dunno quite why you're point was aimed@me, but whatever. I was merely commenting on how my neighbours are very hostile, merely because im not from same faith as them (they themselves are Atheist, and have made that abundantly clear). I'm not trying to force my beliefs on anyone, i'd just like to live in peace.
Mike usually works as a general contractor, but usually bring in professionals/experts at what they do. Mike's been working for a number of years, and he's not a jack of all trades/master of none.
i love his show..

i would quiet rock that house too if i was listening to/ or someone was playing that shitty music
knevil753 2 years ago
So this construction was done only one side of the wall? whereas the noisy neighbor's wall had no work done right?
Zhorellski 2 years ago
It technically was done to both. But the one with the quiet rock was the best drywall. The other side probably had half inch drywall, ordinary.

Oh the background music when they are talking. It's "americanized" already. Canadian version was so much more simpler and easy on you.
Hope they never do this to 'Restaurant Makeover'.
