If you want to find out more details about the armor systems of Battletech, read the Techmanual of the Classic Battletech game. MrStaghare is more or less right.
A previous comment said that these were shilone areotech fighters, beloning to kurita. However after reading the revised edition of technical readout 3025, it is a actually a F-100 Riever.
@redreaper2020 Well an modern real battle tank is 55 tons and has smaller surface area on the ground than most of these mechs (The games say they are between 30-90 Tons even though that would mean their armor should be less dense than a normal tank's, yet they are much stronger than tanks in all games.) If you can believe the weight they claim then they wouldn't sink any worse than modern tanks. But based on size and strength they seem like they should weigh over 250 tons which would sink bad.
@metalictempest How do you figure they have lower ground pressure? Look at the feet at 1:24 on both mechs, especially the front one. 1/4 of the tank's total size is track area, giving it half the ground pressure of your average car. A 50-ton vehicle on 1/2 the size (about the size of the background mech's feet) would be the same as a car. You add in the fact that it has to walk, meaning all weight on one foot and then the other, and it'll sink like a stone even on firm ground.
@redreaper2020 Just thinking that 1 foot of a lot of battlements looks much larger than a tank's tread area though I don't have any numbers. That plus battle-tech's specified weights put most mechs in the weight range of real battle-tanks. It seems like they would be similar to tanks then. But I find it unbelievable that something like a timberwolf could be as light as they say (70 tons if I remember correctly?)
@metalictempest The armor on mechs is actually very thin. Canonically they are borderline hollow with armored plates of a reinforcing honeycomb. Thus being much lighter than they appear. (Can't recall the source, its one of the bloody books somewhere.)
@dec20056 actually Mechwarrior is Battletech, there are hundreds of mechs and many of the early designs were very humanoid like the Atlas because of the way they operate and the pilot is hooked up to give the mech balance. All mechs can run, punch, and jump like humans, pick up tree's etc it just takes a skilled pilot
That is some great animation work... I would love to see this type animation with a story and plot in the battletech universe with people doing voices and make it into a little video to share... Great work.
Very awesome! Your ASF's actually look like decent craft that may physically fly, I really liked how in the beginning that one drops the LRM missiles to fire!
@toien Well, it was only a couple years ago that Catalyst Game Labs managed to recover the rights to some of the 'Unseen', and IIRC there were none of those 12 'Macross-based' designs in this video (I thought I saw an Archer, but then it shot a PPC blast so I knew that couldn't be right :) )
@JRBL1A1 the WHM-6R is still an 'Unseen' 'Mech sadly; putting that design in without paying a pretty penny to H'armhony G'huld would just result in another lawsuit. :P
@refutonefandus I'm not exactly a fan of the Jihad era (I'm more of a Clan Invasion/Fed Com Civil War kinda guy but I'm open to the other time periods) but the Jihad was heavily implied long before 2001 one. The Word of Blake was being built up since the 90s.
Thanks for this, sir! It's wonderful to be able to see some of the classic Mechs like the Cyclops, Locust, and Wolverine! I look forward to seeing more! :)
the only 3 things I can think that need work are. Lighting ( in some scenes). texturing (but yours would look better with new lighting) and 1 of the animations were a tad sketchy. but other than that. it was really great, better than most people would call beginner stuff lol keep it up
Wow! Is this a Mech Warrior game? I cannot wait until Mech Warrior comes out.Go Draconise Combime all the way totally. Nice virtual animation. So,is this a real mech warrior video game or what? If so,which mech warrior game is it?
Not bad at all! Your modeling is dead-on, I even recognized the aerospace assets, Shilones and Visigoths, right? Got a bit to work on with your actual animation for the Battlemechs, make their steps a bit more heavy, but not bad at all! I'm very impressed.
Beginner animation maybe, but its good and even better, its original stuff. Getting sick and tired of these so-called "tribute" uploads. Anyone that puts up original work and doesn't try to pass off plagerised slideshows as their own work gets high marks from me.
hmmm, chippewa, union class dropship, wolverine mech, looks like a striker light tank, i see a locust, a cyclops, i think an urbanmech, definitely a dragon, looks like a pair of archers and a battlemaster in the hanger, shadow hawk and a rifleman outside of the landed union, stinger in the stills, a stalker and 3 demolishers. How'd i do? :) by the by, that red areofighter that was also on the box art for the original areo tech set, is that the samurai? i never could find stats for that one
You got em all, the flying wings are Reavers, its the same thing, pretty much. You are the first to mention the Shadowhawk and the Rifleman. I redesigned them to NOT be the "unseen" versions that caused so much trouble with the law. Please look up Mechwarrior Living Legends to play a game that really follows the cannon of Battletech, it's awesome. I hope to join their team .
@dontwant2work That was a pretty big one. Good one too if you put the right things on it. I wonder what it's like controlling it in MechWarrior4 and/or 5 O_O
i like your stuff, wow who wouldn't. but really the only practical mech there was the locust, a 20 ton mech, scout class, travelling a max speed of 120mph. woohoo, now thats running fast. the srm's, small and medium lasers, or autocannons aren't much...but in todays world, it would make for an interesting crowd control device, ahaha. thumbs up, i used to read alot of fasa books, and play the games, watch the show.
I made all these models for a total conversion mod. The models are low poly because they needed to be ready for the game engine. The textures and designs were all done by me. I was a huge fan of battletech since I was very young. I don't think anyone will ever truly capture the real concept and spirit behind battletech in any video-game or movie. By the time game technology catches up to battletech, the battletech universe will be too quaint to seem like a plausible future. I hope I'm wrong
it was never about a big robot stomping around a battlefield. It was about a new type of weapon among many others. Infantry, tanks, choppers and spaceships all played into the world of Battletech. It blows me away that no game has taken advantage of the huge vault of gold that the BT universe is. But like I said, I hope I'm wrong about that. Maybe there will be a game that does it all.
Better textures, lighting, and some more effort in nailing down realistic movement and that would have been completely kickass. As stands it is still awesome. Don't ever give up!
I play Classic BattleTech (the tabletop game) and as far as I know, they only have level 3 rules as of this point in time, and in general Level 3 Rules are not considered Tournament Legal. Level 2 Rules are the standard for play.
Dude, if this is your beginner level work, I can't wait to see what you consider "pro". It's better than alot of game cutscenes! My only suggestion would be to not leave the camera in a fixed position for outdoor action shots, it makes everything look at bit wooden and constructed. Random movement (like a handheld camera) or a slow sweep would be perfect.
@superjamiedotnet Not being rude but.... this is beginner, speaking on course level. This is damn fine 1st-2nd course college work. But when you compare it to Pixar and such (People who have gone all courses and experiment) THAT is what is meant by beginner.
One of the developers working on the latest game books mentioned that BT had moved more towards the "walking tank" than "anime robot" concept... a pity, I liked that it was between the two. Battlemechs aren't going to do spin-kicks and handsprings, but they were originally described as far more flexible than they are shown nowadays. Since they have no basis in reality, its all up to the game companies it seems : (
Alright listen up newbloods. Some mechs have hands because they can actually pick up objects with them, i.e the first Battletech game teaching you this, and I believe it's in the old board game as well. Most mechs are controlled by Neurohelmets which allow the pilot to basically move most controls with thought, also mechs are powered by what is basically, synthetic muscles. So they aren't that clumsy.
In 2040 ad, your going to be lecturing a classroom of new soldiers/jock-pilots, on operating their new mounts, after basic training. The cadets, just haven't been born yet. you'll be a Halo 4 masterleader. ha-ha-ha!!!
Loved it! It is truelly awesome! Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if the Mechwarrior designers started Mechwarrior 5 again and call upon you to animate their models! Great Work dude! ^.^
3025 man, great job! Now, let one pick up a severed arm and beat the crap out of another mech and we can be clear of that misunderstanding for good and all :) Great job, hope you go far with animation, you have the mind for it. Appreciation for the work.
This is hands down the best amateur video I 've seen man. Great work using Aerospace fighter combat with dropships, then going down to some 'mech combat. 0:31 was a nice touch with the tank crew member waving and going back into the tank. Love your choice of music would love to see more (that's my only complaint)
Reeeaaally nice :) Gotta love the good old 'Mechs... None of that Clan crap, just the good old times when the Medium Laser was still a useful (or even main) weapon on a 'Mech :)
Actually, hands on mechs are extremely valuable. Not all arms need to be Large Lasers or PPC's. MANY mechs have hands, not few.
Hands have many uses like:
-- Eable mechs to carry salvage from the field very quickly
-- Mechs fall and get stuck in combat. I know it doesn't happen in the games, but read the books for more detail, but hands allow you to help other mechs.
-- A huge battle fist on a heavy/assualt mech can be more powerful than the largest autocannon. punches and kicks
I never said you care about salvage in the middle of a fight. However, you often end fights in a hot zone where salvage crews cannot get to in time. Therefore, you can tear off an arm holding a valuable weapon and hold it in your hand to take back to base
Of course Mechs can get up by themselves. So can every day people you see daily. From time to time, people get stuck or need help. The same goes for walking humanoid war machines. Having a hand helps
...Do you actually play battletech? What the hell kind of mech has a fist more powerful than the largest autocannon? Since the earliest days of battletech, melee combat has been virtually useless, even axes and -especially- swords are pitiful compared to proper munitions.
@SoManySkinks Uhh, no way. A kick from an assault mech can easily cripple a lighter unit, and punches have a (IIRC) 1 in 6 chance of hitting the head. Hardly useless.
@ratbuddy1 Seriously? ANYTHING easily cripples a lighter unit. And who the hell are you fighting that lets a -light- get in melee with an assault?! Jesus, the guy stands a better chance of ejecting at you, maybe he'd smear up the cockpit with his guts, blind you a little. You take a light or medium with a head-capper and maybe you get lucky.
TSM makes the entire design revolve around TSM and takes too much micro to be worth my time. Just tag the TSM guy early and bucket him, it's not like you can go wrong with 100 ton targets. Not to mention, anyone stupid enough to let a 100 tonner, let alone a TSM hit him in melee combat...
I do have to say that mechs holding weapons is kinda gay. It just doesn't fit the Battletech style very well. However it does remind me of Heavy Gear. I don't know anything about gundams though.
some of those mech jsut look like gundams painted with the Mech symbols on them, and I am referring to only those that are Holding Weapons, Lame, the weapons are BUILT into the mechs, not separate.
You're retarded if you think they look like gundams. All of the mechs used are from Battletech. Try having some knowledge about the subject you're talking about before posting.
I know the difference between Gundam and Battletech wiht as much as I know, I only played 3 and 4 for so long and seen books and looked at two, I just notice a certain trend as to how they seem to be built. The only mech I know to have something similar to having hands would be a atlas, look at 1:25 and you will see what I mean, compare it to what you see in the games and other items. I am not saying I could be wrong, I am just seeing certain trends pop up to this bud.
Unfortunately, only a small fraction of the Battlemechs in the Battletech universe make appearances in the MechWarrior digital games. I'm no expert on all the machines myself but I know there is a greater number of Battlemechs with manipulator appendages in the Battletech universe than most assume. The Atlas just seems to be the most well known.
Sorry to say, a number of the mech designs fo BattleTech were ripped off from Dugram and Macross and a few vehicles from Crusher Joe. Oddly enough, the mechs don't look too out of place in the BT universe. FASA eventually got sued by the Macross title holders, they never heard anything from the holders of the Dugram series.
And this video was 10 times better then this shitty BT cartoon from '96!
@NaglfarCommando You do have to admit that some Mechs have the Mobile Suit look cause of the handheld guns(Early BattleMaster and 2 other designs i can't recall the names of right now)
If you want to find out more details about the armor systems of Battletech, read the Techmanual of the Classic Battletech game. MrStaghare is more or less right.

Dude, if this is your beginner level work, I can't wait to see what you consider "pro". It's better than alot of game cutscenes! My only suggestion would be to not leave the camera in a fixed position for outdoor action shots, it makes everything look at bit wooden and constructed. Random movement (like a handheld camera) or a slow sweep would be perfect.
superjamiedotnet 2 years ago 32
@superjamiedotnet Not being rude but.... this is beginner, speaking on course level. This is damn fine 1st-2nd course college work. But when you compare it to Pixar and such (People who have gone all courses and experiment) THAT is what is meant by beginner.

One of the developers working on the latest game books mentioned that BT had moved more towards the "walking tank" than "anime robot" concept... a pity, I liked that it was between the two. Battlemechs aren't going to do spin-kicks and handsprings, but they were originally described as far more flexible than they are shown nowadays. Since they have no basis in reality, its all up to the game companies it seems : (
RifterBlade 2 years ago

BattleMechs havent hands!!!
sry for bad english
RoLord20B 2 years ago
They have, actually...
As pointless as they might be, some BattleMechs really do possess hands.
DuncanDDante 2 years ago
Actually, hands on mechs are extremely valuable. Not all arms need to be Large Lasers or PPC's. MANY mechs have hands, not few.
Hands have many uses like:
-- Eable mechs to carry salvage from the field very quickly
-- Mechs fall and get stuck in combat. I know it doesn't happen in the games, but read the books for more detail, but hands allow you to help other mechs.
-- A huge battle fist on a heavy/assualt mech can be more powerful than the largest autocannon. punches and kicks
CucciCadet 1 year ago
-You don't care about salvage in the middle of the fight. And after it's over...it's the salvage crew's job.
-Mech's can get up by themselves, if they can't then they shouldn't even try to be upright in the first place.
- Axe (or variations of thereof) could be more powerful than most weponry, but if a mech punches something...
You won't even be able to give 'em the finger with that hand.
DuncanDDante 1 year ago
I never said you care about salvage in the middle of a fight. However, you often end fights in a hot zone where salvage crews cannot get to in time. Therefore, you can tear off an arm holding a valuable weapon and hold it in your hand to take back to base
Of course Mechs can get up by themselves. So can every day people you see daily. From time to time, people get stuck or need help. The same goes for walking humanoid war machines. Having a hand helps
Battle Fists are hardened for punches
CucciCadet 1 year ago
...Do you actually play battletech? What the hell kind of mech has a fist more powerful than the largest autocannon? Since the earliest days of battletech, melee combat has been virtually useless, even axes and -especially- swords are pitiful compared to proper munitions.
SoManySkinks 1 year ago
@SoManySkinks Uhh, no way. A kick from an assault mech can easily cripple a lighter unit, and punches have a (IIRC) 1 in 6 chance of hitting the head. Hardly useless.
ratbuddy1 1 year ago
@ratbuddy1 Seriously? ANYTHING easily cripples a lighter unit. And who the hell are you fighting that lets a -light- get in melee with an assault?! Jesus, the guy stands a better chance of ejecting at you, maybe he'd smear up the cockpit with his guts, blind you a little. You take a light or medium with a head-capper and maybe you get lucky.
SoManySkinks 1 year ago
@SoManySkinks TSM on an 100 ton mech hitting something does do an incredible amount of damage.
Haydin1117 1 year ago
@Haydin1117 Ewww, talk about a one-shot.

"BattleMechs havent hands!!!"
The Griffin at 0:35, Atlas, Shadowhawk, Hatchetman, I am sure there are others. Some do have hands the majority don't.

I do have to say that mechs holding weapons is kinda gay. It just doesn't fit the Battletech style very well. However it does remind me of Heavy Gear. I don't know anything about gundams though.
frogjedi4 2 years ago
Actually those designs were all liscenced; They paid to use them.
MelvinTheMagician 2 years ago
some of those mech jsut look like gundams painted with the Mech symbols on them, and I am referring to only those that are Holding Weapons, Lame, the weapons are BUILT into the mechs, not separate.
raider0020 2 years ago
You're retarded if you think they look like gundams. All of the mechs used are from Battletech. Try having some knowledge about the subject you're talking about before posting.
NaglfarCommando 2 years ago 10
I know the difference between Gundam and Battletech wiht as much as I know, I only played 3 and 4 for so long and seen books and looked at two, I just notice a certain trend as to how they seem to be built. The only mech I know to have something similar to having hands would be a atlas, look at 1:25 and you will see what I mean, compare it to what you see in the games and other items. I am not saying I could be wrong, I am just seeing certain trends pop up to this bud.
raider0020 2 years ago
That's a wolverine. the Legs look similar to a zaku's or DOM.
NaglfarCommando 2 years ago
Unfortunately, only a small fraction of the Battlemechs in the Battletech universe make appearances in the MechWarrior digital games. I'm no expert on all the machines myself but I know there is a greater number of Battlemechs with manipulator appendages in the Battletech universe than most assume. The Atlas just seems to be the most well known.
Hadespwr 2 years ago
Sorry to say, a number of the mech designs fo BattleTech were ripped off from Dugram and Macross and a few vehicles from Crusher Joe. Oddly enough, the mechs don't look too out of place in the BT universe. FASA eventually got sued by the Macross title holders, they never heard anything from the holders of the Dugram series.
And this video was 10 times better then this shitty BT cartoon from '96!
