  • damn chris botti rippin it on the trumpet..im HUGE fan of john but chris just man..killed it..

  • shit

  • Proving once again what is best on YouTube is not equivalent to viral.

  • John Mayer drives me to distraction!

  • I love Frank Sinatra and just found this song by John Mayer then special guest Botti...wow what a treat!

  • He looks sooo different without his hair

  • he looks sexier

  • Gibson L-5 gimme gimme gimme (drooling)

  • Wow, that's great

  • what a treat. Gotta love the sound coming from that band. who's on the trumpet? He is amazing... Dayum John, keep on going higher, and viva la jazz and blues.

  • Chris Botti is on the trumpet.

  • This song is slow but its pretty awesome, and ya hes goin out with jennifer aniston that lill lucky

  • I don't think I would call No Such Thing shitty, it's probably one of the best produced/ written song I've ever heard. He wrote like that so he could have to oppurtunity to play like this, his Room For Squares tunes created alot of accessabiltity for him. I also would'n't call this a poor attempt at jazz guitar, he plays very creativily...

  • that lucky bastard, hes nailin jennifer aniston

  • I think she's the lucky one :D

  • So ridiculously good!

i believe it's called "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" by Frank Sinatra

  • He didn't go to berkley or anything on guitar. You're completely right.

    yeah....

  • berklee in boston...the berkley you said is in california....just lettin ya know ;)

  • his solo isnt meant to be jazzy itz a turn around, and i dont see in flaws vocals

  • nameunavailable1234:

The same can be said for accomplished jazz musicians trynig to play the blues: their performance unappealing, their solos probably too jazzy for the blues, and their vocals not nearly as soulful enough.

What did you expect? John's performance was at the very least acceptable for jazz to the unelitist eye.

  • the transition at 2:03 is soooo cool

    love it

  • i officially like him now because he's covering frank sinatra perfectly.

  • Love him!!

  • wow he stole my idea of covering a frank sinatra song

  • lol, that bastard!

  • jazz truly is the greatest genre of music. so much feeling...

  • I'm counting on John to get people interested in Jazz again.

  • Really, I hope so as well. When Raul Midon teamed up with Jason Mraz I thought that might bring some Jazz into the spotlight. Mraz doesn't have the same kind of appeal or talent as Mayer though. Midon, on the other hand....

  • @cjfraz1227

i wouldn't count on it. he's mostly a blues/pop musician. this is one of two gigs where i've seen him play jazz and the other was also with chris, a well know jazz trumpet player.

  • @cjfraz1227 i just wanna say... he's mostly blues soo i dont think so!

  • you know what, i think i like this

  • John Mayer is a musical genius!

  • what song is this?

  • in the wee small hours (of the morning) by frank sinatra

  • a sinatra song

  • does anyone kmow where i can get this as an mp3?

  • i used to not like mayer, but he really is cool and talented

  • No! He's much sexier with short hair!!!

  • You know what the weirest thing is?

Some people really don't respect Mayer as a musician.

    Fuckin' crazy right?

  • lol just you

    john is really ripped now

  • he got buff

  • He has changed so much and I love this guy, he is my hero.

  • i like him better with longer hair....i thought it was really hot!....but no matter John Mayor is awesome

  • How about...five time grammy musician..hahehaeha...

and more five nomination in 2009...

  • Anybody as shocked as i am by his new hair do? I didn't recognize him on the Grammy nomination night until he began to sing, with that do he looks like my ex. But i still love him, John Mayer that is =)

  • Great jazz guitar work, though you can definately hear his blues guitar trying to get out. haha

    John Mayer Rocks!

  • Damn, loving the jazz work on the guitar and the shift in vocal style. Hopefully he puts out a whole album with this type of influence.

  • i wonder if this is an indication of the direction John is heading for with the next album. Hes done blues and pop. next jazz??

  • actually its jazz that put him on the map. hes bery jazz and blues influenced, listin to his old old old stuff like heavier things and room for squares, its jazz writtend witha cool shuffle and lyrics that gice it a pop appeal, study the music theory it suprises alot of people

  • but he's never done a jazz solo

  • Mayer singing jazz now...What a great change...hope for better!!!

  • join continues to show so much great taste

  • this song is awesome and that guitar is just beautiful..nice jazz work by John Mayer

  • ok... i was kinda dissapointed! Im such a JM FREAK! and i went to 2 of his shows this summer and i was expecting something else. (but i still love him )!!!

  • OMG!!!!! I just fall in love with this man over and over again!

  • No, I think that's what Mark Whitfield is using. Idk

  • his voice almost reminds me of john legend in this video. it was very good though

  • yes. I totally heard john legend too!

  • Ha me too, first couple words out of his mouth I had to do a double take.

  • beautiful.

is there anyway to get this on my ipod?

  • anyone mind telling me the song title for this song? pls and tq! (:

  • In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, original is by Frank Sinatra, unfortunately this version is not recorded anywhere. To my knowledge this is the first time John sang this song in public.

  • yeah its his L-5 with a two-rock amp set on a high rhythm reverb

  • Forgot all about this and turned the TV on just as Letterman was thanking John and then it went off, so thanks for posting. Love the song, he should do more like this

  • That is simply one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

  • I couldn't agree with you more.

  • Greeeaat!

  • Ohh nice...loving it from Oz

  • ditto

  • I was working and missed out on seeing it.. Thank you for posting it!

Does anyone have any idea of the amp Mayer is using? Thanks

  • usually two-rock

  • But not in this vid. He is using a smaller amp, at first I thought it was a roland Jazz 120. But I has writing, not the roland symbol in the top right hand corner. any thoughts?

  • Actually when he plays live his Dumble is his Amp of choice... and those things run for like 10,000 resell... The dude only builds em if you're worth his time and every amp he makes (only 200 or so so far) is made with the particular player in mind...

  • Yes.....Alexander builds great amps but the funny thing is it doesn't sell as high as a Trainwreck amp built by THE LATE KEN FISCHER.....His amps go for 35K and only 100 amps were built since 82'......super touch sensitive amps....Worth the money.....You can play a cheap guitar thru a world class amp and sound wonderful....but play a world class guitar thru a cheap amp it still sounds cheap...HAHA...IMHO.... Amps make a bigger difference.........

  • TOTALLY agree... I got my first american standard strat thinking it would blow by 96 japanese squier out of the water and the difference wasn't that astounding because I'm only playing through a Fender 212R... So a Nice Blues Jr. or Hot Rod Deluxe is in my future...

  • they are 50k resell....and did you know John Mayer has the most in the world right now?

  • He used to play a Dumble but for the last three years he been playing through a Two Rock Amp. He has a signature model, only about 20 were made and retailed for 10k

  • Cool tune. Love the chord progression at 2:04. Lovin' it.

  • I waited all year for this night. I expected something quite different than this. So nice to hear a nice quiet smooth song from John. Wonderful!

  • This is by far the best version that I've heard of John doing this. (which of course, he's only done it a handfull of times)- anyway, talk about a guy who trys to hit every angle of music possible.

I'm still waiting for grunge rock Mayer . . . just for a laugh.

  • lol John Cobain!

  • Beautiful. Thanks for the Thanksgiving tradition, John.

  • oh man... i tuned in just as the trumpet player was starting to play and had NO idea it was john... was mesmerized and so thrilled when it finally dawned on me who it was. thank you for posting it so i could see the whole thing again!!

  • Perfectly sublime!

  • This is a version of "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" (Frank Sinatra)

  • i was so excited it was thanksgiving because i knew john mayer would be on lettereman. Although this wasnt the song i had in mind it deffinetly was still awsome and glad i remembered to tune in.

  • I like the mood of this Sinatra tune: well done band! MAyer's vocal tone is alright, but I like the guitar playing much better. Chris Botti impressed me, too with nice phrasing and tone. I wonder if we'll see more of Botti/Mayer collaborations on John's new weekly CBS Variety show that will be airing sometime in the January 2009?

  • What song is this? I love it.

  • Very nice!
