There are sharks in those waters, as there are throughout the Caribbean, but I'm aware of only one documented shark attack in the area. That was in the 1970's, involving a SCUBA diver in deep water off of St. Thomas (USVI). The Virgin Islands aren't known for this and if you are sensible in the water there the risk is extremely low.
