This is one of the first enka songs I ha d ever heard (I didn't get into it until the late 1980's and it was because I was studying Japanese at the time). So it brings back some memories for me.

My Japanese friends still get a kick out of the fact that I like enka. It is largely considered old people's music in Japan.

im not sure what kouhaku is.

But I like the enka singers: Hokosawa, ishihara junko, fuji ayako, yoshi(one song), sen masao(one song), godai natsuko, kenji niinuma, itsuko hiroshi. I like more, but I can't remember them as well as these.

PS.- do you know the name of the song kenji niinuma sang about a hawwaiin girl who gave out flowers in hawaii. If you have the recorded tape, it has him singing near a ported ship.

"Kouhaku" is the NHK annual New Year's singing contest between the women (Red Team), and men (White Team). The contest covers Enka, as well as pop and some rock... I have watched it every year since 1985 and have some fond memories.
