Awesome cover - you've definitely got a lot of talent. It's hard enough for a man to cover a song that a female originally did, but one this difficult? Great job!
This cover is amazing!!!! Ive listened to your version about a million times in the last 3 days, its just sooooo great.!! The first time i saw it i didn't even notice the pitch problems cause everything else was just soo great!! Keep it up and do more, you're really great!!
Hey thanks a lot! This song hypnotized me too, and I couldn't stop singing it. I never got around to re-doing it after my cold got better. I could probably nail it now. Maybe I still will. Sub-up and you'll be told when I put up new stuff. Thanks again - your comments are appreciated!
Would I be right in saying that the 'harmonies' are just the guitar chords, but being filtered by the movements and shape of your mouth as you sing? I've done a cover of this song and am fascinated and intrigued as to how vocoders and harmonizers create the effect of lots of voices occurring at once.
Well done though, this is an interesting version you've done :)
YOu could wisper into the mic and get the same vocoder sound. The mic is only looking for the formants you produce, not the notes. The formants trigger the notes your guitar/keyboard are playing. With this I blended in my natural voice to the vocoder sound. That's what is happening on Impgen Heap's version, only she used a keyboard.
The guitar triggers the volume of the sound and the notes of the vocoded harmony. My voice triggers the filter on the guitar sound like a wah wah pedal, and there is also a straight signal of the voice in there too. There is no original guitar sound. It's hard to explain. If I only strum the guitar it makes no sound. It requires my voice to trigger the formants.
@Chadfish Thanks. I guess to sum it all up, are you ONLY using the voice box, guitar and mic? I understand recording signal processing, but I don't know much about the voice box, I'm thinking of doing this same thing, except with a keyboard
I did add some delay in post. But other than that, my guitar and mic are plugged in to the box and it is responsible for all the sounds. Thear are 2 awesome vids that show the real range of this thing. My vid only shows the vocoder. Keyboard works great, as does anything you can plug in with a guitar cable. The only dry was with the voice, but yes there could be more vocodeed voice. There is no dry guitar even though it sounds like it sometimes. I plan on re-doing it better. Eventually that is...
Wow. Sounds great. So is it the guitar that determines what vocal harmonies are generated? I assume it would also work with a keyboard with a midi hookup? Dude, you always have all the best stuff!
Yes the guitar notes determine what the harmonies are. No midi. You can use anything that generates sound like a keyboard, acoustic guitar, as ling as you can use a guitar cable to plug it into the box. The guitar doesn't make any noise until my voice triggers it. This is awesome. I want to thank you also because I was going to sell my E harmonix voice box to get some extra cash but you just re-inspired me.

what kind of delay are you using?
bindangr 1 year ago
@bindangr I think it's a delay in Cubase, not a pedal.

Does the voice box create the effects for the guitar? Or does it sound like that because of the strat?

Hi there, good version. One thing you could do to make it sound more like the original is to lose a bit of the dry signal in the mix....good work!!!
