Cameron also took from that awesome French-Czech cult Sci-fi animated masterpiece Fantastic Planet as one of his inspirations. There's the same giant blue aliens, humans against aliens theme, weird alien world, the same alien critters, wild people who are wise to nature and of course a giant mystic tree where aliens meditate. Also, with a bit of research, you would all find that this movie *does* take place in a rainforest, but not in a *typical* rainforest. The movie takes place in Australia, where the flora and fauna are very different from other rainforests and jungles dues to Australia's relative isolation from other continents.
