Because they break when they are designed, built or operated improperly (as we see here!). And happened to me more than a few times.
But on a fast boat like this, nobody has a better solution...centerboard slots are trouble at speed. I liked Dick Newick's emergency crash box for the daggerboard. He understood the dire consequences offshore.
I had a 15ft dinghy blade split in two. The core was glued together with a bead of PL-249 construction adhesive and the skins met at a knife-edge along the leading edge. Only as bit of polyester and guts putty held the whole thing together (not). The core had zero structural integrity. And this was built by a "reputable" builder (in Rhode Island).
Judging by this latest round the world series, I'd say nobody has learned a da** thing in 40 years.
Surely the centerboard was damaged in the cartwheel a minute earlier. Still, one of my nightmares is snapping that thing off. Funny when it happens to someone else...... sort of.
Sacrificial board saved that boat from splitting case to transom. They must have been going 30+ knots when they struck. Good design.

@vibratingstring
I didn't think knife edge was the best profile, I thought that round profile was better. Just like helicopter blades.
