If you're going to try Linux on that Dell, try Ubuntu. You will not be disappointed. I've been running Ubuntu on my Dell Dimension 8400 since 2006 and currently using version 8.04. It works great. Only problem is finding printer drivers -- so stick with HP and Canon printers. Kodak printers are NOT supported on Linux.

I have a Dimension 4400 that I bought new in January 2002 and still have... though hasn't been fired up in several years. Same exact specs as this one. Think I paid $1000 for it new. Like all Dells of that era... they were "bulletproof". Never had the slightest problem with mine. They will not run Vista or Win 7.
I know what you mean bout other ppl needing to use ur comp man haha its annoyin huh... the dimension is pretty good for exactly that web browsing and typing up documents etc. (or what your mom needs to do on it) Don't pay 60 bucks for a monitor... I have like 4 in my garage that I could give you for only 10 bucks... even free...
so check out craigslist or your local ads there are always sweet deals.
Hey dude I actually checked out some garage sales around my neighborhood... didn't find crap! I walked by one of the dumpsters and I found 2 computers.... this one Dimension 4400 and a optiplex 745 (which i got lucky) because it had 2 gigs and it was duo core 2.6 ghz
Anyway I also got lucky on the 4400 though because all the parts were working on it... now it is up on ebay. Don't try to install windows 7 it either will not even read the dvd disc or it can't support it...
XP RUNS FINE ON THAT 4400 WAS MADE WITH XP ON IT. I HAVE ONE 2GB RAM IN IT AND 2.8GHZ PROCESSOR. AND DUDE IN VIDEO YOU GOT 256MB NOT GB OF RAM LOL WILL HOLD WINDOWS 7 32BIT BUT 512MB RAM OR MORE
I Found the exact same computer in the trash Friday night. It had No Hard drive , no ram , no video card, no internet card, no floppy drive and one of the CD ROM drive covers was missing. I put in a 256 MB video card with a 38 GB Hard Drive , and whatever else was missing.
Now it runs Windows XP Fine with 768 MB Of ram. And a 1.60 GHz pentium 4.
My mom has an old 8 yr old computer its a Dell Demention as well....and its to slow for her facebook games....so she asks to use my laptop...its sooooooo annoying i agree!! its get your own computer!!! lol i wish i can fine a computer in the trash that can play her dumb games... :P
they are free on craiglist and i feel for u my mom is unemployeed but im am lucky because my dad make a ton so we are doing fine but i hope you do better
Its not to hard to find a free monitor check craigslist . Lot f people just want to get rid of the tubed ones. But they work just fine. I am using old dell one atm.
that wont work with windows 7... even windows xp proly will proly run slow on that if its only 256mb ram also how many cores does the pentium 4 have 1 or 2 or how many?
The pentium 4 have a single core, but the last version of Pentium 4 had a virtual dual core because of the Hyper Treading Technology.

First you install vista, then you install 7 from there :)
