Actually the bass player should play the time and the drummer should 'color' it. And if you're drummer is playing to a click then props to him for making sure the band stays put. If the others can't stay with him then kick THEM out.
@beansandcornbread I don't know shit about music? Don't jump to conclusion so fast, you moron. Fingerstyle player have always been more talented and thats a fact. You are retarded.
Playing with your fingers isn't what makes you a good bassist. Its the style you play or basically how you play all together. Fingers or Pick, it doesn't matter as long as it sounds good. So if you care so much about the pick vs finger-style thing, you are limiting your creative abilities and will never progress.
@gm3dgames I dont want to start a fight but i think for Bluesy jazz= Finger style. for that crisp spund rather than the plasticy slice...but for metal then it should be for a pick
@gm3dgames Yes, playing with your fingers inherently makes you a better bass player. It requires more talent to play with your fingers. Playing with a pick is a crutch, PERIOD. You don't know what you're talking about. I'd imagine you've never played with a band. Loser.
@SpiritOfDetroit You obviously are a child. No adult could be this stupid. It's a different style that produces different sounds. One day when you grow up you will realize how moronic you sound.
@beansandcornbread You obviously aren't a musician, or worse, think that you are a musician. You have proven you don't know anything about bass playing. Only a convert guitar player would play bass with a pick. Bass is supposed to be played with your fingers, period. Only a talentless hack would use a pick.
well idiot, I DO play with a band and i DO know what i am talking about. Being more open to more techniques is what makes you a good musician and in this case a great bassist. Finger picking can be hard for most people AT THE START. Finger picking is really nothing special, it didn't start on the electric bass in the first place anyway. If you want to be a serious musician instead of a pathetic troll of youtube then try be more creative and learn that its not all in the fingers
@beansandcornbread You don't know shit about shit. No greats play with a pick. The fundamental block of bass playing is PLAYING WITH YOUR FINGERS, PERIOD.
@SpiritOfDetroit John Deacon. Bobby Vega. Paul McCartney. Roger Waters. John Paul Jones. Do I really need to continue? I am predominantly a pizzicatto player, but a pick is just fine. You are seriously misinformed.
to the guy who said he needs to lose the pick, he's in HEMLET, and Page Hamilton requires his bass players to use picks, just ask previous bassist Frank Bello (who plays with his fingers in Anthrax).
Not for bass... Don't get me wrong bro I love bass and metal but the bass in metal often gets mixed out. Ask most metal musicians it's just the fact of the thing. I wish metal was more friendly to bassists but it's not...
Yes there are good metal bassists but my point is that there aren't many. Truly the list you gave is very short if you consider the huge majority of metal bands that don't have great bassists. And don't Black Sabbath and Heaven Hell both have Geezer Butler on bass?
Yes, but two bands and different styles throughout. Geezer played differently on the later BS albums of the 80's and into the 90's.
We also have to ask what constitutes a great bassist in this question. One that holds the bottom end well and can deliver vox like Tom Araya, or even Petere Steele? Or are we talking about guys that are skilled and rarely labeled "virtuosos" at their instrument? Seems like guitarists have that word exclusively now that I think of it.
I think what constitutes a good bassist in most any genre is the ability to fill out a song and make it sound less tinny. Which most bassists easy can do with EQ. Second is to be able to add extra melodies and sounds through development of theory/ear training and use of techniques. Sadly my point is that the majority of bassists in metal get mixed out because the guitars have allot of bass in there EQ mixing the bassist out and not giving them much playing room.
Oh definitely. I've got a better ear for bass now than I did before I began playing the instrument. Before I didn't really even pay attention. It was like my ears had the treble all the way up, all the time. Constant low-fi black metal perhaps? Haha. Even in the bands with mentionable bassists, metal wise, they can sometimes be hard to discern other than that "feel" that's there.
Although he's talking basics, it is some important stuff to know. Unlike all the other crap bass lessons on youtube. And to add to that statistics crap before my post... 99% of bass players are ex guitar players that couldn't get a guitar gig. lol
lol i'd go with like 80%, i went to my friends band practise once and i had to ask why the bass player sucked so bad and it's cus he played guitar. so what i did was i picked it up the bass and he tried rythem guitar so everything was good in the band =)
yeah that's basically what happened with me. all my freinds play guitar but most of them suck, and I wanted to learn an instrument so im like " fuck guitar, ima learn bass."
exactly the same at my school theres like no way of starting bands coz theres like 80% guitarist 15%drummers and the remaining 5%bassists and vocalists and the "kewl popular pple" play guit so im like WTF im not popular and theres always gonna ba abetter guitar player out there so bass dude
There'll also always be a better bassist. Play both man. It's what I do. Sure bassists have more gigs and opportunities to join bands, but playing guitar is just as much an extension of a musician's soul. Well, for some it is. Others are more exclusive, or have passion for other instruments.
Don't get discouraged or let anyone boss you around about what to do on a bass though. Serve a song, but be yourself and play what you fucking want to.
that kid must blow at guitar. If you can figure out how to use your fingers and you're a guitar player, and you can't play bass, then you can't play guitar either. I know crazy bassists that pick up guitars for the first time and own at that too. I just started playing bass, and personally I think its way more fun than guitar. ha ha. Sickest instrument ever.
it all really depends on the type of music. if it's industrial for example, with lots of sequencers and synthesizer parts that are repeated in specific tempo, it's logical for drummer to use some kind of click track. Truth is that click track is now widely used in studio while recording, but not so much while rehearsing.
