Allegretto moderato e triste 1/4note=63. Since when does that equal a funeraltempo at 40 bpm as we are used to here it. Read the score! Puccinis intensions are clear. Colline is in a hurry. Mimi si DYING you know. So BillF; I dissagre with the rushed tempo. Listen to Toscaninis recording and we´ll all get a hickup of all the "rushed" tempi. Maestro Toscanini conducted the worldpremiere so he should very well know Puccinis intentions.

@DrFernandoBicudo Sadly, I must agree. I love Ghiaurov but this rushed tempo does seem to remove any emotion from the piece. Not to say that it should be some overwrought slowly paced dirge, but a couple of points of emphasis would seem to lend this piece a bit more emotional power. I don't pretend to know anything other than what I like so, there you have it.
This video illustrates why I like Ghiaurov better than Hines. He manages to take a giant instrument and articulate multiple levels of dynamic, and despite having a tyrannical maestro who is rushing the performance - manages to bring out the a piaceri and tenudi in a remarkably emotive way.
I would love to hear a recording of a younger Ghiaurov singing this aria.
You are a shit. Who are you, imbecille, to insult and judge the greatest ones? Who do you think you are? Well, all I can say is that you are a fucking shitfaced moron that cannot achieve anything in his life or anything in the Global Opera Scene and you make yourself false esteem and self-confidence by insulting one not only a king, but a true God of Opera and thinking you are better than him. BAH! What pig you are! Talker. Better people like you have never been born.
Besides my last comment which was towards unnannoneulleretra, this recording is far beyond divine. This is the best Vecchia Zimarra and the best La Boheme recording there is. Luciano Pavarotti as Rodolfo, Nicolai Ghiaurov as Colline and Mirella Freni for Mimi if I do not mistake. So much greatness in one recording.... No words can describe this. And no, it's not rushed, not at all. It's just as it has to be. Besides,It's not the singer who decides the tempo, it's the conductor and the producer.
Brilliant Performance! I have a recording of La Boheme with him in it as Colline. Personally, I think he rushed the first phrase, but other than that, amazing.
Look at the score...the first two bars are in tempo, then there's a ritenuto in the third bar. Ghiaurov does it exactly. It's not "rushed" at all. The first two bars are his "getting the attention" of the jacket, then he tells the coat what he wants to tell it, thus Puccini's tempo indications.

The aria is pathetic, boring! Puccini really doesn't know how to write bass, baritone, or mezzo arias. Only his tenor and soprano arias are amazing. Ghiaurov is good though, as always.
I guess it's a question of taste. In the score, the range is very narrow, the interval is mainly a whole tone or semitone, the melodic line is monotonous, uninteresting compared to the great tenor and soprano arias of this opera. The aria for baritone in "Tosca" is actually more elaborated melodically. Verdi composes much more intersting arias for basses and baritones for example.
What's most difficult? Paint a masterpiece with a couple of strokes or with a thousand? The fact of being simple don't diminishes the work. Regard something based on its complexity is the most ordinary fallacy of all.
Did I mention simplicity or difficulty? No, just the melody as such. The fact that this aria is simple doesn't make it lame. it's just too short, and too repetitive. Actually the less complex an aria is, the more its text is intelligible, the more the listener focuses on the meaning between text and music, the more beautiful the aria is. "E lucevan le stelle" (Tosca) may be a "simple" aria, but its slow rhythm, its rising climax, its extended phrases make it a very dramatic aria
Brilliant, he's giving basses and bass/baritones all around a great name, by which they may be recognised over tenors for once! We basses need some more epic songs that won't be overshadowed by amazing songs like 'nessun dorma'!

It is true the performance is a bit rushed but other than that it is beautiful, Ghiaurov's voice resonates with romance

This particular aria is actually more of a slow recitative, or at best an arioso.
