The space race was a joke, captured German technology hijacked and called its own by America. The Germans were using V2 rockets against Britain as early as 1942. The first U.S space rocket test was just a V2 without the swastikas on it. Operation paper clip was a U.S project to get all German ww2 scientists to work for the U.S military regardless of the horrific crimes many of them had commited. The U.S should be ashamed...

Just for the record: there was NO SPACE RACE. The USSR was racing the US but the US was not racing the Soviets. Calling an evolving technology like spaceflight a race was incorrect. Eventually a race developed from the US Apollo program in 1961 but the early years were not a race -no matter what the books or news of the day said or any videos today.

@MrDeano324 USA got ALL the scientists in Germany after WW2, Read Operation Paperclip, one of which is Von Braun that headed the NASA program.But compare it to the USSR, they were left with old German junk(such as V rockets) to study on, yet they were able to build better rockets from them earlier using their OWN scientist and no German scientist to help. Germany wouldnt be able to go to space w/o Hitlers crazy ambitions that pushed German scientists to the limit(they discovered so much)

You make a good point about the USSR getting all the "junk" so to speak. But yes, the USSR was decades ahead of the U.S in space technology. The only reason the U.S got to the moon first was through captured German scientists and technology. And even then Russia got to space first...

The Germans were the true space race winners, the USSR a sound second, with the U.S coming in last place for not having their own space technology, and for cheating basically.

@MrDeano324 Basically Germany was the main factor that made USA a "world power". If im correct, they also got very good German economists in Operation Paperclip. And with German technology,they created the atomic bomb, jet engines and basically the first steps on stealth technology. Russians have very smart scientists,but I have to admit they need basis or a starting point to get them going,thats where Germany comes in. Hell, Russia wouldnt be the no.1 at rocket tech now if it wasnt for Germany.

@999cheetos999 You are wrong on many levels. The a-bomb was invented by Americans like Oppenheimer, with the input of certain European scientists. The methods of enrichment and the firing triggers (uranium bullet) were all American. The Germans were never successful. Second the Horton Ho was not a stealth aircraft. It was made of wood (radar absorbent), because the horton brothers promised the Luftwaffe that they could make it cheap materially. And triangle shape has nothing to do with radar.

@njdevil281 The triangle shape has HORRIBLE aerodynamic properties and requires sophisticated computers to fly one properly(modern B-2 has computers but still flies like a fat ass), why make a triangle shaped aircraft that is horrible at flying(adding that it is tailess)instead of the traditional fixed wing design? Because of its ability to reflect radar, it was PROVEN by Piotr Ufimtsev himself. Its made of carbon filled plywood,Britain did it with fixed wing aircraft and was better.

The Horton Ho is a flying wing and is not triangular. It is aerodynamically stable. It was not designed for stealth, but for long range bombing and to be materially cheap.

The B-2 itself is a bln dollar aircraft yet w/o computers it would crash, because they CANNOT make its triangle shaped body for RCS stealth aerodynamically stable,only diamond is aerodynamically stable(F-22,PAK-FA). The SU-37 or 35 can fly without computer assistance and they have the best aerodynamics and flight capability today. Im looking at the horton now and it has triangular nose configuration,it doesnt have to be literally a triangle

@999cheetos999 It doesn't matter where the concept for the a-bomb came from, the fact of the matter is that it was invented in the US in the largest most expensive project of WWII, it took 500,000 workers across the US in state of the art facilities across the nation, to enrich the uranium and develop the bomb. Germany wasn't even remotely close. And operation paperclip was standard intelligence gathering procedure. Capture their top scientists and make them talk for anything suspicious.
