  • Thank you SO much, Michael, and writer of the Butterfly biog., and commenters here. I admire Ms. McQueen so much. This is such a good treasure. What a brilliant "GWTW" she gave us, and what a noble, intelligent life, often under such crummy circ.'s. Brava, Butterfly!

  • I am a huge Thelma McQueen fan from her first movie of notoriety "Gone with the Wind" as Prissy, to Mildred Pierce with Joan Crawford and on the Jack Benny show as Mary Livingstone's maid....it was quite interesting to hear McQueen and Eddie (Rockchester) Anderson's strange voices on the same show even though it didn't last for long.

  • too bas she was an atheist : (

  • @amastara Yeah, I read that too!

  • @weh63 a devout atheist at that...

  • Heavens to Murgartroid! Never heard the late great Butterfly McQueen sing before now! Very distinctive voice & mannerisms. Wonder if she was related to fellow performer Steve McQueen.

  • OMG! Strange, hilarious and delicious! This is the best thing about YouTube I think, the way it brings back to life works that would otherwise go forgotten. How many people have even heard of this show? How many copies of the cast album were pressed and how many survive? Yet thanks to you and YouTube, the whole world can listen and enjoy--and maybe giggle a little too. THANK YOU for sharing this delicious musical confection!

  • Thanks, Mikey, your comments are too true and made me smile. :)

  • Does anyone know where this came from? There's nothing online about it. Did she have an album?

  • It's a bonus track from the release of the 1964 musical by Willard Straight & David Eddy, "the Athenian Touch", in which she appeared.

  • The unmistakable voice of Butterfly McQueen; thanks for sharing.

  • I am very respectfully laughing my backside off!

  • Butterfly's voice always had that freshly-inhaled helium quality, but this song is obviously heartfelt and sincere. I can't get over the rolled r's tho'...

  • I..... can't believe my ears. They're telling me I am enjoying this in a completely ironic way.

  • She died Dec. 22, 1995. As reported in the New York Times.. Earlier in the day, Ms. McQueen was critically burned when a kerosene heater in her one-bedroom cottage just outside Augusta, Ga., caught fire. She suffered burns over 70 percent of her body and died at Augusta Regional Medical Center.

So sad she died that way.

  • I love Miss Butterfly McQueen. A wonderful lady. And frankly, my dear, we don't give a damn if you can birth babies or not!

  • Thank you for posting this. A lovely tribute to an unusual talent. My biography 'Butterfly McQueen Remembered' was published earlier this year by Scarecrow Press. I corresponded with her for years, and treasure the letters and postcards she sent me. The book seems to be doing well! Butterfly has a LOT of fans!

  • Thanks for sharing. I'd love to get a hold on your book eventually. There was obviously much more to her than the Prissy persona.

  • i think she sounds hysterical...no offense

  • Me too :)

  • enjoyed this. her voice reminds me a bit of Macy Gray
