Incidentally, it was the Norwegians who rather typified black metal (it could be argued; though Venom portrayed the original image/aesthetic). I find your appraisal to be unrealistically pessimistic, in the least. If it weren't for the Norwegians and their overall influence and development in the black metal scene as a whole is undeniable (particularly in Ahkenatan's music, it's certainly prevalent and extremely obvious at this point).

I think Sodom (Germany) created it with a Thrashy sound, Bathory (Sweden) took it to a new degree but, still kept it in the vein of Thrash and their later works proved that. Mayhem (Norway) made it rawer and Burzum (Norway) did Atmospheric/Depressive. Emperor (Norway) made it Symphonic, Dissection (Sweden) made it Melodic. The others have been floating around. Don't see anything unique in USBM.

It's just I feel that most areas will have their own mini-scene of Black Metal music and they will generally convey a certain sound. Most of the interviews I've read are specifically bands i.e. Dissection, Lord Belial influenced by Swedish Folk and that all-together has one sound.
