Spanish Vihuelas are 10 string (antique ones) or 12 string (more modern ones). This is a Mexican Vihuela, which has 5 strings. This fellow does a good job of demonstrating its use in Mariachi music.

The old or antique vihuela was made in Spain, in the 1600's. It had 12 strings, and the more modern Mexican Vihuela has 5. The spanish Vihuela and Mexican Vihuela share hardly any similaritys, and are not related in any way.
