@THEkevinboyer go yo either the inn in windhelm or whiterun/ the one in whiterun is a dark elf very useful merc.. and the one in windhelm is a brenton two handed swordsman i do beleive both of them are sitting at the tables and they cost 500 gold each to have fight for you inbox me if you need more help on this matter

You dont need to follow the main quest to get in thieves guild. You can just join.
