So many things wrong with the engagement in this video...
Engagement starts at 0:08, the fireteam doesnt immediately fan out and return fire as they are supposed to. The squad leader fires over the heads of his troops, which is a no no. The ambush lasts until about 0:20, after this Opfor has withdrawn, these soldiers are blindly firing into nothing but trees. The Taliban never hang around after an ambush, they attack, and withdraw. What they should have done is immediately flank left and push
@controlusplease1 forward to cut off their withdrawal. On top of all this, it seems as though only 1/4th of the Squad is returning fire, the rest seem to be, simply, sitting around doing jack. They remain far too long in one position, when engagements like this are determined by tempo and momentum. Whoever moves and fires first is usually the victor. Who dares, Wins.
Oh, and before people start calling me a couch warrior, i have 3 combat tours under my belt, 2 in Iraq, and 1 in Afghanistan.
@msvideovidya I've been on two combat deployments to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, my last one was this past spring and summer. The only enemy i ever saw were dead. My buddy actually summed it up the best by saying "all we did was get in firefights with treelines." They're not stupid. The average engagement is about 150-250 meters depending on the terrain and they use cover and concealment so it's actually very hard to see them unless you catch them breaking contact.
Much respect to the brave men and women risking their lives overseas. I just wish we had better leadership so you all would have never been in danger in the first place. What happened to the soldier who was shot?

I love the flame war that is going on. I've learned some Marine tactics from my father.(he learned them in Panama.) There was fire coming from that direction, so they suppressed the target while they had time to retreat. Suppression is what they did, it's a very helpful tactic.
@MeskovicZ if there are Taliban in the area, the taliban don't need to know American soldiers are close by hearing guns go off, they always are watching the soliders even when the soliders are at there base. Our troops are always in the eyes of the Taliban.

If you don't know ,you don't shoot like maniac on drugs. What they did was:
1. Shoot on nothing.
2. Spent a lot of ammo on nothing.
3. Gave away their current position to enemy.
4. Gave intel to enemy about what type of firepower they got in their arsenal.
If insurgents had artillery set up few km away from this position ,these guys would have been screwd big time. Even if they had 2 snipers ,this platoon would take casuality's

They must already know if they can shoot at them and manage to hit somebody. I also don't think they shot on nothing... If somebody shot at me and my friends and hit somebody I would light up the general direction from where the fire came from just like they did here. There was only 1 shot fired upon them. That shot might come from someone who just hate presence of NATO forces in their country. That person might not be "involved" with insurgents directly. So if any insurgents were in that area ,they would know there is hostile platoon wondering around. More than enough to make them regroup and come up with strategy that could mean difference between life and death.
The situation in field is far more complex than it might look like. Not every shot on U.S troops come from organised insurgents. If this was a proper ambush ,you know your self there would be far more shots involved than just one.
I do respect these soldiers and i understand that they put their life on line for their homeland. But with this incidenet they just overreacted and performed very poorly.
@MeskovicZ@SeanRamey to MeskovicZ: i think ur underestimating the value of someone's life, a person's life isn't measured by the number of bullets sent down range. that "1 shot" that was fired hit a guy clean in the head, which means whoever shot them was definitely aiming, so if i were there i'd be shooting as fast as i could to suppress the person also. This troop was shooting so much because he couldn't see the insurgent, but the insurgent could see him.

Knowing those bullets are flying directly above your head makes you want to naturally go into cover. It's called suppressive fire, and it saves lives.
