Csn you imagine Rihanna trying to sing this type of stuff? I cringe at the thought... There is no mention of penis and the repition of yeah, oh, ah, nah, eh, and baby, to cover for the fact that she can't sing.
oldie but a goodie, eh! Yes, she is Canadian, from around Toronto I think. Breathe From Another was a collab with a musician/producer guy from Minneapolis, I think, going by the name of "Doc". The record was actually recorded at Doc's studio and they submitted it as a "demo" to the label...which said, uhhhh, it's too good to be a demo, we're selling it as is! Which is unheard of these days to have such a technically advanced recording go from home to broadcast, with no label intervention!
on a completely different note, the live arrangement here is as excellent as the album version. as far as the first album goes, Doc deserves most of the credit. not that Esthero's voice isn't everything you'll ever need to hear, because it is, but it was just an accessory on Breath From Another.
I firts heard Country Livin' on chris rock's movie "I think I love my wife. The song instantly caught my attention so much..that i had to fast forward to the end of the movie . once i found who the singer was ..i looked her up..and fell in love with the whole CD. This was back in 2007. I listen to the Cd all of the time..and i'm black.
@lagirl68 thats exactly what i did rewinding etc and forwarding to the credit then typed the name into google and bought her album lol but this was in 2009, i'm also black and a man!! her music is true and complex but simple
@lagirl68 dude, who cares if you're black. would you like a medal for having diverse musical taste and not being a thug loving rap zombie? check out saul williams movie 'slam' -it's so old i forget when it came out--late 90's or early 2000's-anyway esthero's on the cd. by the way--i'm black.
@researchsiempre . first of all I am a female. I was just stating that i'm black ,because most of my black friends said that they don't care for this type of music. Unlike my friends, I do have diverse taste in music . I don't limit myself to just one genre. Thanks for the tip on Esthero.
@lagirl68 the first time i heard country living was in 1999, in a movie called "slam" and i didnt hear it again until like 2001 when i was in college and trippin on weed and cough syrup on a friend's floor. the experience was so good that i went out the next day and purchased the "breath from another cd"
@lagirl68 i love esthero and im black also...she is the deal. im glad people are noticing her from some of her songs that are in movies. been listening to her since 1998
no wasn't cut. this is how i first discovered esthero...on the chris rock show! she's the greatest ever, so greatful to the chris show for bringing this blessing to me.
I am always floored by Esthero - I have had Breath From Another for 9 years - but this live version just knocked me over - I might be wrong, but I really don't feel that there is anyone that is more talented than this woman. God she just drops me - I am a musician too, and people say I am talented, but this woman just makes me want to never stop listening to her
I actually heard one of their songs (Country Livin)on "I Think I Love My Wife" and just loved it! although it sounded like Bjork, I knew it wasn't so after some research, I found the title and then group....lemme say I have already downloaded everything I can find from them! Great vocals and overall sound!
makes me sick to think of how different things are now, as opposed to back 5 years ago when we were obsessed with her. look her up on myspace, she has more trancy shit up.
except for the fact that she has been around for just as long as bjork, and her sound has been the same the whole time. I like esthero, but bjork sucks so they dont sound the same
She's been around that long? Man, it makes you wonder doesn't it, the fact that Bjork (i don't hate her but shes not that great) can become some huge worldwide success with multiple grammys while Esthero has stayed relatively unknown. She uses her voice like an instrument, taking full advantage of every subtlety and controlling each note with mastery that very few singers have now. And it doesn't hurt that the music behind her is just as awesome. Why is she not as popular as so many others?
@TraciH123 WRONG!!! Bjork dropped her first solo album in 1993. Breath From Another Came out in 1998. I find it amusing that Esthero herself has named Bjork as being a big influence, but some of her fans can't get past it.
I just have to say again, that Esthero is awesome. The performance was just great, and notice how the guy was getting on the drums so hard his stick broke!
Both albums are just awesome, cop them when you get the chance.
Great band! A lot of people don't know them, but I keep hearing their songs popping up in movie soundtracks. Always sick!
Saw these guys play in Boston during this tour years ago. The show was delayed because the band had to go bail the guitarist out of jail. Genius got busted outside the club smokin' herb in the back alley :)
No. Like, Esthero is the singer... the band is just the traveling back-up band. First album was her and a DJ named Doc. 2nd album is just Esthero the singer. The band is a group of session workers.
Doc Mckinney is the producer who plays the guitar in this video. BTW, the guy is a genius producer. Anything he has touched is gold check out Res and Graph Nobel. No one else has been able to do Esthero's voice justice (except maybe Esthero producing songs herself!) I am guessing he did the arrangement for the music in this video as well. After her first album, over 10 years ago, they had a falling out and went their separate ways much to the disdain of Esthero/Doc fans.
I have always liked Esthero, albums are so DAMN HOT. This song is years old, and still is smoking. When I rock this in the ride people always ask "Who is that?" Esthero is so much better than most mainstream garbage out there.
First time seeing her perform live, her and the band was amazing. +10 for Chris Rock for having her on.
how is it that good music like this doesn't get recognition by say...the grammy's? I've been dying for a radio station dedicated to playing more lesser known artists.
Amazing song, incredible performance. You want more music like this??? Go out and buy the fucking album and stop the pirating (especially little-know groups like this) and then maybe they won't have to get a new day job... Selfish SOBs!
PS Not directed towards everyone - "they" know who they are... the lowlife scumbag leeches of society.
Oh please, give me a break. Have you seen the prices on some of these CDs? Especially from Europe? Insane. Buying every CD is just unreasonable. I mean damn, my iTunes library is worth hundreds and thousands of dollars. I would have never have heard some great music in my lifetime if I had to buy everything I heard.
her debut album came out in 1998 and was called "breath from another". goodie mobb used her track "country livin [the world i know] for a featured song on the slam soundtrack
