I loved this book but only read it when I was in my 40's. (I am now getting to 60...hmmm) I always had a problem reading fiction because it wasn't "real?" I could read biography's of course because it was about a real person! Needless to say, my reading list has expanded, but, I think it depend on how fiction is written.
I love this movie. The interaction among people is so interesting. I like how the insurance man spreads " information". The mother has trained her children to respect elders and how to act around " company". She also respects her husband and defends him to others. What a good example for wives who have " less than perfect" but loving husbands.
And why did they switch Flossy and Henny? Plus they were both older, at least 19 and 20 something. And...'Bill'? Oh well, guess movies can't always please. It's good so far though :)
Did you notice other differences in the book and movie. I have a teenager who struggles retaining what he reads and this movie was reccomended as one that stays pretty true to the movie. I have not read the book or watched the movie but was getting him to for a reading test.
I never had to read the book for school. I just literally got done reading it for fun, and I enjoyed it. I was glad to find it had a movie to go along with it :)
I gew up in Brooklyn born there in 1954 I like seeing seens of old Brooklyn before my time How time changes the places i used to know. I live in Ft.Lauderdale
I remember when I was young and given this book as a gift, I thought. Goooood this book is gonna be so boring. :( I'm going to hate this.Half hour later I refused to put the book down to do anything. Was a beautiful story. I'm glad I found this.
Why do I feel like they changed stuff around in this book? like did they mix flossy and Henney and Aunt sissy called all her lovers "John" in the book...
We did it was called Woolworths. However the prices were not 5 or ten cents for anything. I love this book and the movie too. However the movie romantizes the lower east side at this time. It smelled, apartment conditions were crowded and squalid and people died like flies.
My brother and I used to collect this sort of thing in the 40's and trek across town with it all in an old pram, it isn't the poor who squander the world resources, you only have to see people picking over rubbish tips or collecting cow manure for fuel to see how recycling has been working for ages.
@XxmollyoliviaxX Lol . . . not "sold out an hour after it opens," back when weekly pay was as low as a few dollars. As in the early 1900s Theodore Dreiser novel "Sister Carrie," a chapter title -- "We Question of Fate -- Four Dollars a Week" (young Carrie's pay). Inflation over the past century has been massive, mind wobbling.
no offense but i never saw a tree, maybe some branches, i like the movie Junior Miss much better, but i can't find it anywhere. i hated this movie it was a waste of time, hidden hollywood messages just to make this world what it is today, screwed up big time
@BeUnotATVrobot it's based off a book haha. The tree was a tree that grew up by the fire escape where Francie would hide out. The book itself was very gritty and a semi-harsh view on life... The movie stunned me a bit.. It's so much more cheerful than I would have expected... Did they include the almost-rape scene even? Also, Francie is considered the tree as well, growing in the least likely of circumstance.. I mean it seems like they kept it sad, but not heavy enough to match up to the book..
@mywingsareyours A book, ok, that makes more sense. The girl being the tree symbolically, I never thought of that one, (neat). Sorry to say i'm not much of a book reader, but i love watching movies with the subtitles, ha ha. I guess it's a book thing or something, but the movie for me, well...was sad enough, but i liked Francie and Johnny (Dreamers). Her sister is the thing that bothered me, she is a bad example, but a "surviver", i guess, and she liked Johnny, Well, Thank You for your insight!
What I really loved about this movie was the realistic feeling it provided. I did not feel like the characters were acting or playing to an audience. It was directed very well and each character actor was well suited to their roles. You just do not see this level of realism in movies that often.Another point of enjoyment was the storyline which remained interesting throughout the movie. I just loved it!
this is another1 of those classics, that is watched over and over, just like at Christmas time, how folks love 2 watch its a wonderful life,at leat twice around Christmas time.thanks so much 4 posting.
haha it seems a lot of people read this book for school...I actually read it for my enjoyment. and it's one of my favorite books EVER. I mean, it has everything--romance, family values, bit of comedy and tragedy here and there, never-ending morals...I LOVE IT. And it's never corny, always poignant and so so true.
thank you sooo much for this! i have to read the book for summer reading, school starts tomorrow, and im on page 70 =( procrastination gets you nowhere.
@ilys43r The book was a lot darker. Betty Smith liked to skewer human weakness and hypocrisy. Generally, so did Elia Kazan, but it may be that Fox didn't trust audiences to get it.
@quartuci8u I KNOW!!! I absolutely HATE when movies change things like that. I mean, it's not a big deal, but still....why even change it?! It's very irritating.
@Ramal123 When this was filmed, there was something known as a production code. It's purpose was to sanitize American film to keep out inappropriate elements. I suspect that Bill was substituted because John is the term used for a prostitute's customers. Sissy did seem to be implied to be a little on the loose side.
its sp weord how ud think the book would be boring just telling the life of a girl/........... but it takes you back and puts you in these ppls spots and its breath takung
amazing!;)

Oh, just another comment, the casting for Johnny Nolan doesn't fit the portrayal in the book.....just my opinion!
