This song is about Kates Grandad who was a coal miner and her Grandmother. Its about Grandad dying from coal dust on his lungs and his wife looking after him while he was dying.
It is tradgic and also a love song. When you know Kate is telling the story of how her grandad died of emphacema "spelling mistake sorry" and her Grandma was looking after him until he died you can see the real strength of this song. It is beautifully written and very passionate.
@PunkLord If you don't get the connection, it's your loss I' afraid.. However if you get the chance, go and see them, they're fantastic and play a far broader selection of music than you'd imagine
Kate, you have a wonderful voice.I have only seen you once in concert...and I have NEVER forgot your lovely sounding voice.you have such a gift.God bless
This song will still be played and loved by Kate's great great great grand children and they will be proud. `this song will be a part of music history
I was there too, and I'll always remember the spine-tingling moment when the brass band (all but invisible until that point) came in. Almost certainly the most memorable live performance I've ever seen.
Does anyone have this live version on mp3 that they can share with me? I'm a collector of coal mining songs and would love to have this live beautiful version.
one of lifes true gifts,she is a living angel,a gift from above,the world ought to listen to her voice and music and maybe peace will find each of us in turn, thanks for the vid you educate the masses with your effort,ur a star...
For those that don't know Kate wrote this about her Grandfather (disabled in a mining accident) and her grandmother's struggle to look after him. Beautiful, personal and very moving

Simply beautiful. The brass ensemble are players from Grimethorpe Colliery Band and the cornet solo is played by Ian Shires.

I'm trying to fight back the tears here.
Against the sweetest voice in Christendom, singing the most mournful song ever written, accompanied (I ask you!) by a bloody brass band!
Can someone please tell me how in hell that's supposed to be a fair fight?

who is this fantastic brass band in the background?do they have a cd available?

@flatus69
She generally uses two, so it'll either be Grimethorpe Colliery, or Coldstream Guards.
