  • $15000 was a lot in those days, i would say about $125000 today

  • We need to bring this back! I'd rather see this than the Celebrity All Star game..

  • how come we don't have these events now

  • bob's legs are were huge. no way he's only 250

  • aaaaaah jo jo was out matched did well though

  • Imagine if we had this today during games!

  • I really feel for Bob Lanier. He was among the top 3 centers of his era during his prime yet was the only one without a championship title to his resume. Loved his offensive game, too. He was like a poor man's Kareem with that sweet hook shot of his, but also had the most complete post game of any center from that time period. The ORIGINAL "Big Smooth" (sorry Perkins, lol).

    ;-)

  • The way I remember it, they taped the one-on-one tournament and would play it during half time of the NBA Game of the Week. Back then, they didn't broadcast all the NBA games. Also, they had a "HORSE" contest. Still remember Pistol Pete Maravich vs George Ice Man Gervin. Though Pete would win with all his fancy trick shots, but Ice Man took him downtown and shot long threes to win.

  • Any idea what courts these matches were played on? The NBA didn't have a 3-point line in the early 70's, and the line is too close for it to be an ABA 3-point line, which was the same as the current NBA line.

The first court looks like it might belong to the Maryland Terrapins? But why would they have a 3-point line on their court?

I read that there was an ABL league that only existed for one year in the early 60's that used a 3-point line.... maybe they used the courts of NCAA teams?

  • This took place during the 1971-72 NBA season.

  • jo jo white is BLACK?

    i...i...but...all these years :(

  • I know Jo Jo White.. that old bastard comes to Kowloon's Restaurant all the time and doesn't tip a single dollar. ALSO he gets his meal for FREE EVERY TIME!!

  • this was so unfair haha but man if they were to do this kind of stuff again it would be so interesting to see a lot of players go head to head and also only within the same height range.. i mean to see dwight vs chris paul wont be as much fun as chris paul vs deron :P

  • Yup It would be good to see those 1 on 1 matches, IDK SOmeone Would like to see LeBron VS Kobe?

  • Jo Jo White is a legend.

  • Very cool! I never knew the NBA did stuff like this.

  • Jeff Mullin is not Related to Chris Mullins Right??

  • why did they stop these 1 on 1 matches ?? need and answer really curious

  • What's with the 3-point line? I thought the 3-point line didn't start until 1979???

  • He beat MARAVICH????!!????

  • Where does it say that?

By the way, they gotta bring this thing back.

  • thank you so much for posting this. have been looking for it and any footage of the old horse tourny but this is the first i've found. thanks for the memories.

  • At 1:10, the bracket is shown; however, I'm having a hard time reading it because it is blurry. One interesting thing is that there are only 16 players at the start of the tournament, but the NBA had 17 teams in 1971-72. The names I can make out are the 4 finalists Lanier, Mullin, Newlin, and White. In the first round, it looks like Jerry Lucas (Knicks), Pete Maravich (Hawks) and Rudy Tomjanovich (Rockets) are there. I think I'm also seeing Butch Beard (Cavs).

  • Wait a minute ... Newlin and Rudy T. were both on the Rockets. I thought it was only one player per team. Maybe this tournament actually started off with more than 16 participants, and the brackets they show at 1:10 reflect the fact the tournament had been whittled down to 16. Maybe there were 2 players from each team??

  • The names in the round of 16 look like Johnson, Newlin, Kauffman, Russell, Silas, Lanier, Green, Riordan, Beard, Mullins, Tomjanovich, Smith, Hawkins, Lucas, White and maybe Martin at the bottom. Maravich is mentioned as having faced Lanier but that must have been the round of 32.

  • gin: Thanks for posting this. I thought there was no surviving footage of this classic one-on-one tournament, which I remember watching as a kid. Vitalis was the sponsor and they were probably hoping Maravich would win since they had a commerical deal with him. This tournament was only run 2 years. Geoff Petrie won it the year later, defeating Gail Goodrich and Bob McAdoo. They played the games at a high school gym, and then showed the taped version during NBA sunday games at half-time.

  • Jeff Mullins is on the most overshadowed players of the NBA. Had Rick Barry not jumped to the NBA, the Warriors would have 2 championships. Yet because of Barry's jumping, he was able to showcase his talents.

What is the name of the song?

  • jessica white-lanier

  • From what year is it? I didn't know that there was a One on One Championchip in the NBA. Was ist some kind of All Star Game?

    Nice, Lanier rOcKZ.

  • this was from 1972 NBA Finals Game 5 in the halftime between LA and New Yrok

  • They need to bring stuff like this back to the league.

  • it looks like jojo white traveled at 0:42 and it looked like jojo almost was going to come back but great video
