I have to listen to this track every day!!! It's simply so def and direct. The rappers of 1978-1990 are DEFINITELY the best and couldn't be better since they are already the best.
@Dablkwid0w2008 She's still around and doing well. She comments on this video as Jamilah37!
As for her picture,I couldn't find one of her so I put a picture of her record up during her verse. damn I wish she could've made an album with all Marley Marl production on it.
@hundredthough I went to school with Len's kids (they were monsters) during the 1980s and nearly worked for the label because of that connection. Peace.
I don't even know what to say; I'm starstruck. This jam is one of the baddest cuts in 80's rap. I was a young teen, probably 13 or 14 when this came out(don't know the year it came out). In my eyes, this jam will never die. The juice crew was the bomb. Much props and "all the respect that I owe you." This jam hit the heart and mind. RIP Mr. Magic. Peace to the Juice Crew. Marley Scratch, Roxanne's dis, Raw, Money in the Bank. I grew up on y'all. Much respect, much respect, much respect.
Why wasn't Poet down? He actually put his life on the line. Grap lived in East Elmhurst...with a fucking chain through the hole where his doorknob lock should've been secured by a master lock. @soln4suhreborn I wish to this day that WB had bought the label outright after the distribution deal ended. Traffic's history is shady at best. Who knows if it'll be around 5 years from now? Peace.
@MuzikJunkyAES I don't think it would've been in Cold Chillin's best interest to have WB buy them out. Remember WB was a part of Time-Warner who also distributed Tommy Boy and Sire. Time-Warner was feeling pressure from different interest groups concerning hip hop lyrics (remember Ice-T/Body Count,Almighty RSO) as well as nearly shelving projects because of sample clearances and artwork (Biz Markie,Kool G. @soln4suhreborn Ice-T was signed directly to Sire, while Rhyme $yndicate was DISTRIBUTED by Epic. Cold Chillin' was DISTRIBUTED by Warner Bros. and had no ownership in the label. Peace.
@MuzikJunkyAES I stand to be corrected. I'm thinking about seeing the old Rhyme Syndicate Management logo beside the Sire logo, the label WAS dist. by Epic (R$R). But I know Cold Chillin' was owned by Fly Ty and Lenny Fichtelberg and was dist. by Warner/Reprise. I was speaking on how WB scrutinized and tried to shelve and postpone hip hop releases on the labels it distributed (Sire,Cold Chillin',Tommy Boy). Thanks for clearing that up.
@soln4suhreborn Well, after Ice-T left Sire, C. Delores Tucker shut her mouth, and business was as usual--and "Live and Let Die" would have probably been rereleased through WB. Peace.
@Jamillah37 wow ur really Glamorous... I was wondering wat happened to you. I was hungry back then for more female rappers to come out and I thought that u was jus as good as Shante. I figured that it had to be the business that took you out. I hear a lot of bad things about the "industry". I your still a legend in my book I bring u up in hip hop convo but nobody seems to remember u. lol But then again a lot of these cats now a days aint really hip hop. Nice to kno ur well. Stay Focused
@BreezelyBruin My Name is Jamillah not Antoinette. My Name by Birth is Jo Ann Berry and Yes I am related to The Famous Chuck Berry. I have not Met Him during my Career. How ever I do plan to visit his Club Blue Berry Hill. I'm gonna try before He or I Die...LOL!
Wow! Oh MY Goodness. I am Sorry you don;t have my picture. I am glad you don't. Because Glam is Muslim now and I am Covered allover. I was young and crazy back in the day. I had fun while it lasted but My life belongs to the Creator. This brought back crazy memories. I still write and rap but I invite people to Islam. check out nasheedsbyjamillah Peace! Glamorous
Glad you came through to connect with all of us. "Good To Go" was the jam too, first heard it on a WBLS Mr. Magic Rap Attack mix. I WILL check out your website and may peace be with you,Sister! Nuff respect!!
@Jamillah37 Peace Queen, I did always wonder what you looked like, one of the many 9 years sittin by the radio with tape decks on pause. I'm glad u explained why I used to go tp Big Beat in Plainfield and Vogel's in Elizabeth and never find Prizm tapes! I'm an artist too and The Juice crew was a BIG influence on my style! Keep Rockin
One of the baddest jams of all time. I remember when it first came out. Roxanne Shante and MC Shan tore it up. Anyone know why Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane were not in this jam?
Good question. I know Biz was a member of the Juice Crew at the time of this recording so it's a mystery why he's not on the song, but I think Kane came along a bit later after this dropped.
Yeah, I do remember that Kane came along a little later. Even Kool G. Rap was in this song, but why not Biz? Strange. Craig G. was dope then. I remember his jam "Make You Shout" when he beat-boxed on that cut. Real Hip Hop!!!
True, Kane was Shante's DJ and he wrote "Have A Nice Day" for Shante' that same year '87. Biz still should have been on there somewhere because he did "Make The Music With Your Mouth" in '86 and "Nobody Beats The biz" the same year "Juice Crew Allstars" dropped (87) and he was a Juice Crew member.... (????)
@soln4suhreborn the only reason he wasnt down on the track at that time was because all of the dudes on the track were from Queensbridge. Biz was from Wyndance LI.
I hear ya. I was born in the late 60's. This era of hip hop was legendary. Nothing like it since. Kangols, beat-boxing, shell-top Adidas, suede Pumas, Bally, Fila, bomber coats, break dancing on cardboard, house parties, boom boxes, the Krush Groove movie, fly girls, free style raps with beat-boxing as the only music, dj scratching, parachute pants, raccoon hats with tails. Remember the Fresh Records/Sleeping Bag Records crew: Mantronix, Just-Ice, T La Rock. Will never forget "Bass Machine".
Don't forget the fingerless gloves, and the feather earrings that everyone used to rock. I remember seeing that a lot when I was a young kid. Also a lot of people used to wear those mesh shirts.
True, so very true. Thanks for reminding me about those. What about that earclip type earring with the chain that would hang down with some kind of like a charm on it? I had one with a knife on it, lol. Damn that earclip would hurt after wearing it for a while. Even the Jheri curl was the stuff. I also remember wearing spiked wristbands and spiked fingerless gloves. Headbands were the stuff too. Damn, those were the days. "Juice Crew All Stars" was a monster jam, just no Biz on this cut.
Haha! Yep, I remember those too. My cousin had one w/ a cross on it. What about those dudes that used to sport those silver bull balls-looking earrings on a leather strap from their ear? I also remember the hats w/ the long flaps on the back (like ppl would wear if they were hacking through a jungle w/a machete)! You know, this decades been similar to the 80's.. Everybody from all walks (& all different types of music) dresses the same way today. They did that in the 80's too!
(Continued) The Juice Crew were awesome..so much talent in 1 group! I remember the 1st time I ever saw break dancing too. I was at the 84 Olympics. They had this park across the street from where they held the soccer matches (I think). Anyway, I had seen it on tv but not in person until them. I remember thinking how amazing it was! All these dudes out there doing crazy windmills, spins, and some were popping to Electro.
if I had a time machine I would go *back in the day* 85-87....the stuff the kids listen to now is just garbage....all shoot`em up ,an how much money an sex you have`n.
LMAO @ "oh my guudness!" besides how funny that sample is, this is an ill ass track, West Coast native showing love to where it began, dont get it twisted though, we gave our own contributions to hip hop and rap in Killa Cali!
whoa so THIS is that song- I knew I heard some song or somebody swore they heard some song about the "Juice Crew Porn Stars" don't TELL me that doesn't sound like what they're sayin. Porn Stahs? Oh my goodness!!
Porn Stars?!,lol!- I dunno about that one, man. I have to check on that one, lol. I played the chorus 3 or 4 times and i can't hear it. I've heard songs that I thought the artists were saying one thing for years and then one day I listen to the song and get what they were REALLY saying, happens often! lol
Yeah especially in this case, right after the chorus says "All Stars" the sample comes in right away with "--Oh my gudness!!" ... The real test should be playing this to 10 people totally unfamiliar with the song, but don't tell them what the title of the song is and have them guess what the chorus refrain is saying. I bet a good number (most?) would say porn star!
Even in '87, G Rap stood out. "You lift barbells but you're still Cottonelle"? What the fuck? Kane might have been wittier with the punchlines but G Rap was more abstract. These swagger OD'in young cats talkin' about bars probably couldn't fuck with the shit he threw away. Line up your top 5 and play the first verse to "Men At Work". Who would be left standing? Go 'head, take a minute, I'll be right here.
Sleeping Bag/Fresh Records put out sooo many good hip hop records in it's day. that's something most of these labels today couldn't say and if they do they're lying!
ok, i want to know who yall think is the tigthest mc in the juice crew. pound for pound, listening from way back then to right now, this cat has not slipped one iota. and that would be Master(Masta) Ace. I know most cats would say Kane or G rap but for my money, Ace got it.
I respect Ace. To me, he was the Inspectah Deck of the Juice Crew, dope as hell but overshadowed by more dominant personalities. "Take A Look Around " is one of the most slept-on albums ever.
Keep in mind, Master was from East New York. He was put onto the Juice. Shan, Shante, Marly, Craig G, Tragedy were home grown. Kool G Rap was just up the way from Carona Queens. I just to wonder how the Juice formed myself. How did they get Big Daddy Kane? I know Biz got on with Shante b/c she introduce him for the first time at the Red Parot club on W 57th St in NYC. Biz was from all over. As a matter of fact, he may have been the one who brough Kane in. Later came Poet, also from QB.
Kane got put on because of Biz. They used to do shows together. In fact, one of their performances is on YouTube, just the audio, though. Kane wrote most of "Goin' Off" for Biz. To my knowledge, Poet was never in the Juice Crew. He had that joint "Beat You Down" goin' at KRS because, in his words, "Shan was bullshittin'". I believe the Juice Crew started with Shan, Marley, Fly Ty the manager and Mr. Magic, whose nickname was "Sir Juice", hence the name.
Kane was also Shante's DJ also. Poet was just on the side of the Juice Crew plugging Magic and Marley's WBLS show on "Takin' U Out" in their war with BDP/Red Alert on KISS FM. "Jealous and hating 'cuz of the rating/Look at the lipstick/can't you see it's fading".... "No more Red Dirt/no more BDP/Just Noel the Juice Crew and me/The poet,The Poet-that's who I am/BDP got known off Marley and Shan.
Those were the days. Remember the promos to the radio shows? Remember the Biz and TJ Swan promo for Red Alert? Those promos were better than most of this shit out now. Juice Crew was the shit.
This candy-cake rap shit has really fallen off that much so in my opinion, you said NOTHIN' wrong. You spoke the gospel when you said that. Rap nowadays is pure GARBAGE and that's my word!
I would say that hip hop was never as creative as it was from '86-'91. Even when rhymes & lyrics started coming back in '94, It was never as original as it was before '92. As a matter of fact, nearly ever style around from '93/'94 was similar to the styles from '86-'91. Especially the G. Rap style.
Very true. I'd even go back one year because some great hip hop records came out in 1985 including some of the first Def Jam releases. As far as rhymes are concerned you are right about the originality of hip hop records from 1992 forward. Production-wise though, the beats became more complex and elaborate due to producers like RZA,Prince Paul,The Beatnuts,Madlib,Muggs,Premier,Pete Rock,Dr. Dre, D.I.T.C.,Da Beatminerz,John Bido & Mike Dean etc. bringing different styles.
kid, you not know what you talkin bout. you ever heard of sucker djs?? that was dimples dee most popular song. on the bridge mc shan said, dimples dee the girl, she was great, her and marley marl went and cut a plate, they used to rock it out in the place and the title of it was sucker dj's. so come on kid. learn yo juice history
"sucker d.j's came out in 1984! as of 1984 there was no juice crew! the whole "juice crew" situation didn't come about untilabout 1986! c'mon, man! i didn't come up knowin' this readin' blog sites! i bought the music when it first dropped! if dimples was a part of the juice crew, why she didn't drop anything during the juice crew days on cold chillin',prism or pop art?!
I have that promo when it was released on Party Time label. The same label that spawned T LA Rocks Its yours! BTW...what label did TLA Rock ended up going to?
Since we talkin about females down with the Juice Crew...were Frick & Frack ever considered part of the JC? Marley Marl did their production however they were signed to Romil...what about MC Shan's sister Princess Ivori?
i'm 10 yrs older than you, son! i was a teen buyin' music when all of this music first dropped! in 1986,87 you were what? 5 or 6 yrs old? you gettin' it 2nd hand! don't challenge me fact for fact on hip-hop kid? you'll come up short everytime! lol!
i will snap your neck like epmd when it comes to hip hop history so, like obama said, if you want to debate it, then come with it. i have dusted chumps in the past and won't hesitate to dust chumps in the future. word is bond.
What MC was the main mc in wild style and what was the name of his first LP released in 1988? and we goin by the honor system, by the way. no looking up stuff on the net. this got to be off the dome.
Damn the Intelligent Hoodlum sound mad young in this cut

The "Oh my goodness" comes from the original street version of "Roxanne's Revenge".
neeksworld 2 years ago
One of the baddest jams of all time. I remember when it first came out. Roxanne Shante and MC Shan tore it up. Anyone know why Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane were not in this jam?
luvindogadis411 2 years ago
Good question. I know Biz was a member of the Juice Crew at the time of this recording so it's a mystery why he's not on the song, but I think Kane came along a bit later after this dropped.
soln4suhreborn 2 years ago
Yeah, I do remember that Kane came along a little later. Even Kool G. Rap was in this song, but why not Biz? Strange. Craig G. was dope then. I remember his jam "Make You Shout" when he beat-boxed on that cut. Real Hip Hop!!!
luvindogadis411 2 years ago
kane at that time was a ghostwriter and a DJ and biz was only a beatboxer at the time...neither of them were rappers originally....
gluvnast 2 years ago 2
True, Kane was Shante's DJ and he wrote "Have A Nice Day" for Shante' that same year '87. Biz still should have been on there somewhere because he did "Make The Music With Your Mouth" in '86 and "Nobody Beats The biz" the same year "Juice Crew Allstars" dropped (87) and he was a Juice Crew member.... (????)
soln4suhreborn 2 years ago

Also a lot of people used to wear those mesh shirts.
soundsfromnothing 2 years ago
True, so very true. Thanks for reminding me about those. What about that earclip type earring with the chain that would hang down with some kind of like a charm on it? I had one with a knife on it, lol. Damn that earclip would hurt after wearing it for a while. Even the Jheri curl was the stuff. I also remember wearing spiked wristbands and spiked fingerless gloves. Headbands were the stuff too. Damn, those were the days. "Juice Crew All Stars" was a monster jam, just no Biz on this cut.
luvindogadis411 2 years ago
They did that in the 80's too!
soundsfromnothing 2 years ago
(Continued) The Juice Crew were awesome..so much talent in 1 group! I remember the 1st time I ever saw break dancing too. I was at the 84 Olympics. They had this park across the street from where they held the soccer matches (I think). Anyway, I had seen it on tv but not in person until them. I remember thinking how amazing it was! All these dudes out there doing crazy windmills, spins, and some were popping to Electro.

whoa so THIS is that song- I knew I heard some song or somebody swore they heard some song about the "Juice Crew Porn Stars" don't TELL me that doesn't sound like what they're sayin. Porn Stahs? Oh my goodness!!
dhalsim27 3 years ago
Porn Stars?!,lol!- I dunno about that one, man. I have to check on that one, lol. I played the chorus 3 or 4 times and i can't hear it. I've heard songs that I thought the artists were saying one thing for years and then one day I listen to the song and get what they were REALLY saying, happens often! lol
soln4suhreborn 3 years ago
Yeah especially in this case, right after the chorus says "All Stars" the sample comes in right away with "--Oh my gudness!!" ... The real test should be playing this to 10 people totally unfamiliar with the song, but don't tell them what the title of the song is and have them guess what the chorus refrain is saying. I bet a good number (most?) would say porn star!
or maybe I just got a dirty mind, nevermind.

Go 'head, take a minute, I'll be right here.

soln4suhreborn 3 years ago
ok, i want to know who yall think is the tigthest mc in the juice crew. pound for pound, listening from way back then to right now, this cat has not slipped one iota. and that would be Master(Masta) Ace. I know most cats would say Kane or G rap but for my money, Ace got it.
germxv 3 years ago
Ace is tight as a lyricist, but as far as fire-spittin' goes,i'd still have to give the nod to Kool G. Rap with BDK as a close 2nd.
soln4suhreborn 3 years ago
What about Craig G?
ginsud 3 years ago
yeah, yeah! i forgot about Craig G...most definitely, and he's still eatin' mad emcees too!!
soln4suhreborn 3 years ago
I respect Ace. To me, he was the Inspectah Deck of the Juice Crew, dope as hell but overshadowed by more dominant personalities. "Take A Look Around " is one of the most slept-on albums ever.
oskamadison 3 years ago
Keep in mind, Master was from East New York. He was put onto the Juice. Shan, Shante, Marly, Craig G, Tragedy were home grown. Kool G Rap was just up the way from Carona Queens. I just to wonder how the Juice formed myself. How did they get Big Daddy Kane? I know Biz got on with Shante b/c she introduce him for the first time at the Red Parot club on W 57th St in NYC. Biz was from all over. As a matter of fact, he may have been the one who brough Kane in. Later came Poet, also from QB.
ectigers83 3 years ago
Kane got put on because of Biz. They used to do shows together. In fact, one of their performances is on YouTube, just the audio, though. Kane wrote most of "Goin' Off" for Biz. To my knowledge, Poet was never in the Juice Crew. He had that joint "Beat You Down" goin' at KRS because, in his words, "Shan was bullshittin'". I believe the Juice Crew started with Shan, Marley, Fly Ty the manager and Mr. Magic, whose nickname was "Sir Juice", hence the name.
oskamadison 3 years ago
Kane was also Shante's DJ also. Poet was just on the side of the Juice Crew plugging Magic and Marley's WBLS show on "Takin' U Out" in their war with BDP/Red Alert on KISS FM. "Jealous and hating 'cuz of the rating/Look at the lipstick/can't you see it's fading".... "No more Red Dirt/no more BDP/Just Noel the Juice Crew and me/The poet,The Poet-that's who I am/BDP got known off Marley and Shan.
soln4suhreborn 3 years ago
Those were the days. Remember the promos to the radio shows? Remember the Biz and TJ Swan promo for Red Alert? Those promos were better than most of this shit out now. Juice Crew was the shit.
oskamadison 3 years ago
the promos were bananas 80's nothing will ever be like the 80's early 90's

Are we all just a bunch of nostalgic ass, bitter old-school heads or has shit really fallen off that much? I say 5% the former, 95%the latter.
oskamadison 3 years ago
This candy-cake rap shit has really fallen off that much so in my opinion, you said NOTHIN' wrong. You spoke the gospel when you said that. Rap nowadays is pure GARBAGE and that's my word!
soln4suhreborn 3 years ago
I would say that hip hop was never as creative as it was from '86-'91. Even when rhymes & lyrics started coming back in '94, It was never as original as it was before '92. As a matter of fact, nearly ever style around from '93/'94 was similar to the styles from '86-'91. Especially the G. Rap style.
soundsfromnothing 3 years ago
