am i the only one that noticed Todd Eberhard is full of shit? the hmv was clearly designed for desert use way back in the 80s (as if they planned on going to the middle east for a long time) anyway, anybody with a few weeks of 4 wheeling experience knows that the jeep runs circles around any hummer. they are failures on the trail but do awesome in the sand...
only 16 inch clearance, The American army should use the swedish Pinz Gauer it can clear 24 inches and if it had the traction it could drive up a powerpole
@ceemosp "Pinzgauer". That's also one of the vehicles Arnold Schwartzenegger owns, I couldn't remember how to spell the the name of it until your comment. Thanx. :)
You could buy 5 Willy's Jeeps for the price of 1 Humvee. I love and support our military but we try to make everything "perfect" and in the long run we get overpriced equipment that costs us a fortune. U.S. Military could have double the strength for half the budget if we used simple cost analysis (Common Sense). Gotta love the simplicity of the good ole jeep!
I spent five years in the army, to include Bosnia. The HMMWV is great Except in Mud. It's so heavy, and so underpowered it gets bogged down easily. The 6.2/6.5L GM diesel may work well in a pickup truck, but it's not really enough for a vehicle that weighs over 8,000lbs Empty. Armor, etc. just makes it worse. On the other hand, the humvee really loves the desert.
its not the fact that the engine is bad it the type of fuel that is used. The US Military uses one fuel type for the trucks and tanks. The Army calls the program "Single Fuel Concept" I read about it in the December 2009/January 2010 issue of "Supply Line"
JP-8 for land vehicles, JP-4 for aircraft. That was in place long before the HMMWV came out. The problem IS that the HMMWV's that I drove from 1996-2001 used the same 150hp 6.2L non-turbo diesel as was in many 80's- model Chevrolet trucks. The pickups were gutless, much less the same engine trying to pull over 8,000lbs with 37inch mud tires. The new turbo'ed engines are Supposed to be much stronger. I can't say for sure because I never got to drive the newer ones.
The only real similarity between an H1 and a HMMWV is the body style. The HMMWV weighs almost twice as much as an H1, with less horsepower. Different transmissions and transfer cases, especially the gas engine models. Our main concern, especially at Ft. Riley, KS and in Germany, wasn't IF we got stuck; it was How Deep. But, like I said, the HMMWV Loves the desert.
A1 would just mean that it is one model up from the original M38. Just like the M16, which is a catch-all phrase even though you have the M16 M16A1 M16A2 M16A3 M16A4, etc. You're pointing out little details that don't matter.
it works in the dessert, but if you go in mountain terrain or forests, you get stuck endlessly
i offroad alot with my Land Rover Defender and we had a geezer with a hummer along once, he never got further then the first mud hole when he got wedged in

@ceemosp I bought mine from the Swedish government after they started replacing the older ones. The one I bought was a 1982 4 wheel drive version.
