Just watched Rush do this as well and I have to say....Lifeson rocked the solo harder than Ed. Ed's version stayed close to Clapton's while Lifeson put his own spin on it.
Before i say this i wanna say i like van halen and dont have anything against them but ive heard them butcher a couple of covers and when i clicked on this video i thought i knew what it was going to sound like...to heavy guitar and vocals...i did not see any of that in this song and am liking this version a lot!
So cool to see Eddie do a Clapton solo as Clapton did it. I expected him to starting squawking and tapping but he went old school and it sounded damn good.
@superslayerguy Yes your very right. this crap sounds terrible...like they never praticed it one time. I think they try to practice but end up either drucnk or fighting or both.... complete crap really
I wish Eddie would play more blues...Nice to see him tone down the dive bombs and tapping and get to his roots...The tastiest chops of his playing has always been the little blues he squeezes in between the madness.
Van Halen needs Michael Anthony back. Not fair for us to endure a high school kid with no stage presence and not fair to put him in this situation. This is Van Halen for fucksake. Roth's vocals sound worn but Anthony and the Van Halen brothers are still beasts.
Why does anyone find this offensive .When Eddie was younger,he didn't just sit in slack jawed awe of Clapton tearing it up on Crossroads -it inspired him to want to follow Clapton ,THE Master. So then Grasshopper van Halen grows up to kick ass himself.....And ?
You gotta love Adnoydal this dude is famous for talkin mad shit about Van Halen and I've to date not seen a comment of his/hers on anything else but Van Halen vids fuckin persistent though
Lately i've been a real critic of Ed just because I didn't like his treatment of Mike and Sammy and also his playing has been somewhat sub-par on that last tour. However, that's the best cover of cream's crossroads since cream. Clapton doesn't even play it with that much energy anymore . That solo was f-ing awesome! I can spot a ed solo everytime. He just has his on personal sound. That solo didn't sound van halen at all. It sounded just like clapton. Damn that was good.
Because I've been commenting critically on Ed's videos where I feel its appropriate so a few of Ed's fans have become all a-twitter over my blasphemy, following me around and thumbing them down, trying to score brownie points wih Ed who is "God."
Bummer, though, because God shits on them and their kind.
@Adnoydal idk wht u mean by their kind, van halens a great guitarist but i agree with wht u mean they need to appreciate the original writer more than call this a cover
Imagine having to play for a bunch of asshole fans who can't even "Comment on This Video" on youtube, much less spell. Instead they rotely screech asinine boy stuff"Ed ist God. open your mouth so we can piss/shit in it LOLOLOL. shit fuck shit cock suck fuck fag bitch LOLOL"
Its odd to me that heteros would get all these gay fantasies as they ogle their hero, a shirtless male with poufy hair, his sidekick wearing assless chaps, Michael Jackson's parade uniform, a hair weave, and doing splits
@Adnoydal ah, i see what your saying. you agree van halen's good though rite? im not gonna doubt that but many fans are retarded. john lennon, pantera, examples?
VH is okay and all, but their fans declaring Ed = God and wishing all non-believers dead, wanting to suffocate them with their piss and shit, is rather sick.
@Adnoydal I fully agree with that. If you don't like a music artist it's you're opinion, not saying you should go trolling oh they suck blah blah blah but you're also a troll if you go van halen is jesus forget the haters you can die!
Ilove this, VH paying homage to EVH's hero Clapton. Eddie has said that when he was younger, he learned Clapton's solos note-for-note. I believe iut cuz this sounds great. I have a DVD called Edward Van Halen & Friends. The "friends" were ppl like Mellencamp, Don Henley, Steve Winwood and Bryan Adams. They played hits by each artists & EVH had to be a lead solo to each song. He was ONLY able to sound like himself. But HERE, he did well at copping the Clapton feel. Nice!
EVH...DANG! Why couldn't he play the 2nd solo of Crossroads? He nailed the first note for note....his attack is a little different because he's a different kind of guitarist, but DANG! He's always said he can play all those Cream solos note fer note, and he wasn't lying.
anyone can say whatever they want about evh but u have to agree that alex still kicks major ass.. maybe cant play the huge solos like he used to but mostly he really hasnt lost a step at all
to everyone who says that van halens better den clapton...get your head out of your arse!jus cas he can do fucking drill picking and tapping doesnt make him the best guitarist in the world! clapton, page, b.b. king all wipe the floor with him
The only one close to Ed out of those 3 is Clapton because he was Ed's main inspiration and it's where a lot of Ed's technique comes from.
BB King is a master guitarist but it's all about the blues with him.
Page is by far the most overrated guitarist in history. I laugh every time I see that Stairway To Heaven was voted #1 for greatest guitar solo, I could name 20 right now that blow it away.
your a fucking idiot van halen got tapping from page you absolute nunce. and stairway is the best solo because no one can top that for phrasing. any way van halen is probably TECHNICALLY better than page or clapton or B.B king, i mean you never hear of BB busting out an 80's tapping solo halfway through hummingbird or something
Did I say that Ed didn't get his tapping idea from Page? No, I didn't. I said Ed got most of his technique from Clapton. I didn't specify which parts of his techniques. And as far as the Stairway solo being the best..........anything ever composed by Joe Satriani, Steve Vai & Paul Gilbert blow it out of the water....not to mention at least half of EVH's solos.
none of those guys play solos, they just play wank. satch has his moments and gilbert is by far the best from those and knows how to write a fucking good rock song, vai is just a pretenitious douche but none of those guys solos compare to stairway cos its epic and emotional not just an ego pleasing wank fest.
by "wank" i mean self indulgent, soul-less and pretencious tripe they play just cos they can, pages solos are raw emotion not "I can play like this cos i sat in my room for 30 years practising" you know why zeppelin are shit loads more popular than vai or satch? cos they can write a good song that doesn't just apply to guitar players so go get your head out of your arse, drink a cup of cement and harden the fuck up
Well, you can't compare EC to Pagey or EVH - EC's a Chicago blues guy & Pagey is more of a Scotty Moore & Bert Jansch kinda player with some Buddy Guy & EVH can't play blues at all. But as far as a studio creation, Stairway's solo is hard to beat (Cream's studio version of 'Sitting On Top Of The World' has probably the best phrased solo ever - check it out). But live - listen to EC on Yokohama's 'Gin House' or SRV on any version of 'Texas Flood'. The KING of improv - Jimi on 'Machine Gun'.
well its BB doesnt tap becuz its not his style, he has no need to bust out tapping, every gutar player have thier own way to express thier emotions on their guitar. Just because Van Halen shred and plays fast doesnt mean its emotionless, look at his facial expressions and energy just full of emotion, Jimmy Page does the same thing going crazy on his guitar n playing fast. Sairway is good song but I dont thing its #1 song but its amazing. VH n Zepplin both rule!
When they broke into this song I was blown away at how much more I loved thes than the original! haha they take simple songs and blow that shit right out of the water!!! You know that feeling were you wish the world could hear what your witnessing! this night was full of it!!!!Long Live The Kings Of True Rock'n Roll!!!
im not having a "my guitarist is better than your guitarist".
the winterland solo is overplayed, the beauty of it is because it was improvised. I think its been overplayed for the last 40 years. I would have been much more entertained if EVH had come up with his own solo.
But i guess you cant blame him, Van Halen isn't Cream and they werent doing the full song.
eddie can play every lick eve made by clapton. and his own solo in which way? during the song? eddie improvises all the time. just shows that van halen can play anything
Eddie first heard Clapton on radio when he moved to the states early in his life. At the time during his first years of school he bought a drum set. Then traded for alexs guitar. He listend to the radio learning Cream songs. This was before then. Theres no reason to argue about this stuff. You listen to Edd he dont sound a thing like Clapton. Evh has and still kicks everyone
VH does covers better than any band I've ever heard. Everything they touch becomes bigger and better than the originals. Yet, I've never heard a band do VH much justice when being covered.....that says alot.
Cause I love the part Wolfie says in the song. Cause I think Wolfie is so HOT!!!!! and is a good performer srry I'm a 13 yr old girl and that's why I think Wolfie is HOT. but can u post it anyway plz plz plz

So Eds basically playing a karaoke of a Clapton hommage.

By the term "wank", I'm assuming you mean they don't know their way around the fingerboard.
Listen to For The Love Of God, Surfing With The Alien, If I Could Fly, Lotus Feet, Salamanders In The Sun, etc.
Stairway doesn't compare to ANYTHING Vai, Satch or Gilbert have done.
People are just too fucking stupid to realize that Page is an overrated guitar player and Zeppelin is an overrated rock band.
