Nice try Bioware, but I don't think even Shakespeare could write a deep story for this series. You have characters called Cream the Rabbit....you'd have a better chance making a epic RPG out of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Mario always does it right. It never takes itself seriously and has excellent funny writing. Why does everyone try to write a serious Sonic story? He's a fucking blue hedgehog made for kids. Lighten up and stop trying to be Final Fantasy for crying out loud.
With over powered enemies for the first 7 parts and only underpowered ones for the last 3, the enemies never seemed to be at the power throughout the game. The story can be seen as either as complete blasphemy that destroys everything that is known from previous games or a cool new look at the Sonic universe the builds off previous games. To top it off the game was too short. Because there is nothing to do once you win, after playing through it once there is no point of picking it up again.
I'm torn, the story is really good, but the sound effects are terrible and out of place. The music doesnt sound like Sonic at all they dont even use the Green Hill music at the Green Hill zone! And the combat takes forever its so boring and tedious. It's made worse by the fact that this is a SONIC game, therefore battles should take place at lightning speed. Which brings me to my next point: Why the hell does sonic move like a slug in the field?!

Isn't it a little odd how Bozon criticizes the game for barely being an RPG (No choices, bare-bones dialogue, running around an overworld getting from A to B, standard combat system), while this game is pretty much a blueprint jRPG like the millions that have beenr released in the past 25 years or so? To be blunt, the jRPG does not resemble the defention of an "RPG" (Computer based or no) at all. Either deal with that, or go back and change the reviews of all those obtuse jRPGs that came before.
What's with all the hate for this review? People may not like it, but all the negative points they brought up here are valid. I'm a huge Sonic fan, but it's universe just doesn't have a compelling narrative. All the dialogue is pretty bland, almost like fanfiction. As for the gameplay itself, it really is just a starter RPG. There's nothing wrong with that, but those of us who frequent the genre are going to find it too easy to be fun. I'm personally enjoying it, but I agree 100% with IGN.

Anyhow, I think IGN did a pretty fair review on this game. I liked SC:TDB a lot, to be honest. I am a fan of both the Sonic franchise and many RPG franchises, so naturally, I had to get my greedy hands on this game.
@gameboy9402 Pretty much the same deal with me. A friend gave it to me, and even then I couldn't get into it. The other weekend I picked it up again, got hooked, and blasted through it. Honestly not too bad, but the ending is frustrating.

you play games for entertainment. if the game is boring then it's not doing it's job. i had to force myself to keep playing. the story in a rpg should be like a good book. you don't wanna put it down because you can't wait to find out what happens next. this game however is so predictable. nothing very interesting happened in this game and they had the nerve to have a cliff hanger ending as if there's going to be a sequel(good luck with that).
I got it, and the main thing I didn't like about it was that Sonic never went fast at all. I kind of liked the battles with the robots and bosses, and the storyline was cool. I usually am not the kind of person to hate on sonic games but this was crap. I do agree with everything that the reviewer said but I think there are some key aspects he left out. The game makes it where you have to play every battle possible to remain a level that keeps you able to play....
The battle mechanics suck. First of all there is no way to dodge which seriously makes having to do every battle terrible. Second of all is that 1/3 of the time it tells you that you "missed" for no reason (which makes doing every battle even MORE cohesive) And lastly there's nothing unique about it and nothing you can do to deal more damage.This game feels like a chore to play

Sonic and the Black night sucked ass, so a 2/10 would fit.
Sonic unleashed is alot better, at lest a 7/10.
This one deserves a 4/10.
When did they fuck up these games?

this game is pretty good.....I dont have the game but I play my friend's one...I think it is kind of boring that you must fight almost with every enemy!! but the song is amazing!!! I am still on the shade thing and i dont think this game is bad after all...In MY opinion...this game is boring but every step you take makes you want to take more!!! so i like it...

you play games for entertainment. if the game is boring then it's not doing it's job. i had to force myself to keep playing. the story in a rpg should be like a good book. you don't wanna put it down because you can't wait to find out what happens next. this game however is so predictable. nothing very interesting happened in this game and they had the nerve to have a cliff hanger ending as if there's going to be a sequel(good luck with that).

I got it, and the main thing I didn't like about it was that Sonic never went fast at all. I kind of liked the battles with the robots and bosses, and the storyline was cool. I don't know how to explain it, but I wasn't really interested in half of the game. I give this a 5/10. Like the guy in the video said: Good for RPG beginnners, not so good for Sonic fans. RPGs aren't really Sonic's thing, I don't think.

I usually am not the kind of person to hate on sonic games but this was crap. I do agree with everything that the reviewer said but I think there are some key aspects he left out. The game makes it where you have to play every battle possible to remain a level that keeps you able to play....

The battle mechanics suck. First of all there is no way to dodge which seriously makes having to do every battle terrible. Second of all is that 1/3 of the time it tells you that you "missed" for no reason (which makes doing every battle even MORE cohesive) And lastly there's nothing unique about it and nothing you can do to deal more damage.This game feels like a chore to play

@TheSonicKid101 Say's who? Look at mario, when they made TTYD, they made a completely different story that made minor characters memorable and the story surprising. It wasn't another princess is captured, but had a twist, completely going against his games before.

I think your right, it was quite the first time effort. The worst part about the game is the music. It isn't bad, just primitive. The best part was how well written the characters were. You cared about them. But why does knuckles know his past?

WTF?!? In this game Shadow says there is strength in numbers but in Sonic '06 ( which i think kicked ass ) he says the opposite! That makes no sense!

Sorry dude, but bad games do happen sometimes, Sonic-related or not. And honestly, nobody really agrees with IGN's opinion 100% of the time. I didn't agree with their opinion of Zengage, because I thought it was really fun.

Man, a lot of people hate this game.
It's actually not that bad, though the ending sucked, but otherwise, the game's playable.
Nothing can be worse than Lunar Dragon Song, if you really think this Sonic game is bad and you wanna compare it to other rpg's? Don't try comparing it to the good ones, try it with Lunar and you'll love Sonic all the way, lol.

The thing is, Sonic is getting tired and played out. His personality has little to no depth, and he was cooler in the 90s. Ever since we've been bombareded with this "SONIC XTREME YEAAH SK8RDUDE XTREME SPORTS!" type of Sonic games, people have stopped caring. They need to stop trying to appeal to suburban cameo-clothed 10yr old rocker kids. At least Mario's ADVENTURES c
