Hurray this bus finally makes it intro presvation with distinction of being the last closed top fleetline decker in normal service. Shame chester bus has now been wiped off the streets and partly relaced with first barbie livery. On another note I hate the Stagecoach Stripes livery I hated seeing GM buses South buses in Stagecoach stripes.
The main difference between an Atlantean and a Fleetline is that the Fleetline has a drop centre rear axle so a much lower floor height, and therefore is lower overall. All Atlanteans had Leyland 680 engines, but Fleetlines had the option of that or the Gardener 6LXB, this being the latter. Gearboxes were also different, Atlanteans had Leyland gearboxes, Fleetlines Damiler ones.
Another ex-manchster bus gone further afield ex L.U.T 589 but with the GMT standard interior fitted. The gearbox whine sound better on a bristol VR though.
I have sat in the cab of this bus and it looks to be semi automatic. It also sounds like a semi auto when you actually hear it. I think most of these are driven as a semi auto.
Daimler Fleetlines Were Mostly SemiAutomatic, I also sat in our Fleet Number 97! UJV 97J. Grimsby/Cleethorpes Transport (Now Stagecoach Grimsby Cleethorpes. 97 has Now Been Scrapped! This Bus was a Daimler Fleetline with Park royal Roe body and a Gardner 6LXB engine of 150BHP.
As far as I am aware, the Fleetline's Daimatic gearbox is of an SCG design which is probably why Gardner powered Bristol VRTs and REs sound very similar.
No the Leyland Atlantean is slightly different, the Atlantean has an unmistakeable roar to it. There is also slight variation in the downstairs windows offside, but you have to be really observant to notice this.
I never new the difference until I discovered that they were often bodied by the same company. Ie ECW, Park Royal etc. There may be one or 2 similar mechanical components but the underpinnings are different to an Atlantean
Correct me if I'm wrong but is that bus an ex-Manchester one (GMPTE). It looks like it. Most of these ended up finishing off their service life in Halifax.
Thanks for that. I remember in the late '80's there were some Atlanteans sent to Yorkshire Rider Leeds (YR).(The Fleetlines went to YR Halifax. The last fleetlines (XBU 17S) in Hfx were withdrawn in 2002(and some went to GMPTE Preservation Society). We did get another batch of Atlanteans in the late '90's mainly for Huddersfield and a few for Bradford. The last ones were withdrawn in Leeds (which were transfered from Huddersfield) in 2003 which were A737NNA and ANA557Y.
I remember these Fleetlines being withdrawn from Halifax too. They gave free rides at the Peace Hall rally, but I didn't go that year. I also have a video clip of XBU17S at the Museum of Manchester too.
Some were sold on in the 1980 the Yorkshire later and later on after GM North was sold to First some of the older buses did finish off their service in West Youkshire while one that went to Stagecaoch were sold off for further service.
Hi, great video, last time i went out after this bus it was off the road. Does it have a regular diagram or route it is on as I would very much like to photograph/ride on it. Cheers, Tom.
Thanks for comments, as far as I know this bus does make appearances out now and again, but it is up to the drivers as to which bus they take out. It recently made an appearance out on several routes on one day, so no difinitive diagrams sorry.
